I was lucky enough to meet Rudy Valee when I was about sixteen years old. He was doing a traveling circuit performing at retirement homes, so my grandmother asked me to drive her friends and her to the afternoon dinner show at “The Players Dinner Theater” just outside of New Orleans. He sang his old favorites and gave us a slide show of his home life with his wife while he sang “The Most Beautiful Girl in The World”. He was in his eighties then, and every bit as witty and alert as ever when he told us his spoonerisms. I shook his hand and told him how much I enjoyed his show while he signed my program.

Помню эти мелодии с детства. У моего отца в те времена был патефон и множество шеллачных пластинок. Когда какая либо из них случайно разбивалось,это прискорбное событие воспринималось как Трагедия.......

This is an absolutely superb set - not a dud in the bunch of 17. There were lots of winners - Valencia jumps to mind - but Arden & Ohman's Nina Rosa with vocal by Scrappy Lambert hits all the right notes for me.

@@rufust.firefly2474 Thank you J Ryan and many times it depends on the condition of the record. If there is a lot of surface noise to reduce then sadly the treble and bass are hard to maintain. It is very frustrating at times and sometimes I am still not happy with the result. I am constantly looking for was to improve. However, I have found that leaving some of the noise is more often needed. Here is one of my earlier post that had very little work done, this is almost a raw transfer. I should have corrected the turnover and rolloff better on this one.kzread.info/dash/bejne/f3mnmdOufaqxqbA.html

@@pax41 O. K., I listened to Chloe and I have to say... What a great job for beginner!. your work is very interesting to me because I have been a record collector since I was about 12 years old and as you know it was very difficult to always get the right needles and or the right phonograph to re-record for posterity the Treasures I found. I'm looking forward to enjoying hearing the rest of your library. Best of luck! ... by the way, how about a collection of Paul Whiteman the Rhythm Boys recordings?? I love those guys.

@@rufust.firefly2474 I can't believe I missed this comment Rufus. The Paul Whiteman request isn't so hard but anything with Bing in it gets copyright claimed. I also got my very first copyright strike several years ago due to the recording of Mississippi Mud that was posted on the channel. On a positive note, all of the 1920's composition and sound recording copyrights will expire in this decade.

20's bands had a different sound than 30's bands. You can hear the difference. My problem is I cannot articulate what the differences are. Can someone enlighten me?

  • @pax41

Carl, one of my long time viewers had this to say in regards to your comment. "Two specific things separated the two eras and one is that arrangements in the 30's dropped the after-beat which was a characteristic of all 20's recordings. Also, the banjo, which was a mainstay of Vaudeville, was replaced with the guitar. And of course the music in the 30's was just simply less antic and frantic than that of the 20's, reflecting the different temperaments of the eras." I might also add that the tuba was replaced by the string bass and that is another very distinct change in the sound of 30's music.

the 20ies had a harder brass-beat while the 30ies developed into a more orchestral sound with lot of violins the link between the 2 decades was probably Paul Whiteman 👍

The other answers are mentioning that different instruments are being used in 30's bands. Another difference could be that the recordings were done mechanically before 1925 and used amplification after that period giving more realistic bass and better frequency response.

In the 30's, they used more strings, .less Tuba, and the banjo went out of fasion. Also there was always a trio of saxes doubled in octave by the violins. The sound of the tgat was very snooth and sweet because the saxes used rubber mnouth pieces.
