I knew one of the musicians in the Halstead band in the mid 1920’s. Trumpet player Ted Schilling. He loaned me a couple of pictures of the band outside the Plantation Club so I could copy them. He told me at one time Red Nichols was in the band too with him. I wonder why Nichols was out here in Los Angeles playing with the Halstead band? He recorded with George Olson in 1924 then Lanin’s Red Heads In 1926 and his own Five Pennies in 1926 all in New York. Yet there is a picture of the Halstead band with Red Nichols and Ted Schilling so Nichols was out here in Los Angeles with the Halstead band. I don’t think Red Nichols was on any of the band’s recordings though. Thanks for sharing these recordings.

Loved your Halstead concert! Was happy to learn that Ginger Roger's future husband had been a banjo player in this dance orchestra! I've always loved Ain't That Too Bad! My copy of Teardrops has the most attenuated bass grooves of all my 78 s, and whatever had played it before my ownership of it had broken down the groove walls till my Girard couldn't handle it! Yours is a delight to hear! Such nice condition. I've always wished Victor had assigned Henry some of the A grade hits to record. Seems to me that these songs were lesser hits. Like the left overs given to Charles Dornberger. Victor had so many famous bands under contract, that those leaders would get first tune picks. Olsen, Waring, Coon Sanders, Goldkette, Roger Wolfe Kahn, Whiteman, Reisman, Hamp, Garber, Arnhiem, etc. 😊 Even Herman Kenin up in Portland Or. got the '28 hit, Persian Rug! Thanks again for these great 20s sides!

....thanks, Benzo -- I agree with you on all counts. Yes, it's a shame Victor didn't give Halstead better material and more sessions. The sides that I didn't include are pretty boring. But it's still a tight, good band. His 1927 & '29 records are the most over-bassed Victors I have ever run across. The EQ corrections were extreme.

Great sides. "One Moment More With You" is a favorite - really wonder who was doing the first-class arrangements for the Halstead band in 1929. It's too bad that session was their last.

....thanks, Henry -- glad you like the post. "One Moment More" is nice, but I struggle with the androgynous Buster Dees vocal -- he is an acquired taste. Apparently, Halstead was a personally well-liked bandleader amongst the Hollywood crowd. It is surprising that Victor didn't give him more sessions -- the Wall St. crash was six months away!
