I´m very sorry for Annie because Finnick was the only one to help her with her traumatic experiences. It´s also very tragic that Finnick will never get to know his son who has to grow up without a father. I hope that they´ll find peace 💙

Rue being the 75th death is ironic and beautiful: she was basically what started the rebellion, snapping Katniss into disobedience, and the 75th hunger games were the last ones, the tipping point as the rebellion broke off

I expected there to be more deaths-

Prim’s death could possibly be one of the most tragic deaths in all of fiction. Katniss’s whole entire journey began when she volunteered to protect her and she dies from the bomb in the last moments of conflict:( the scene with her cat is even more heart breaking

See I know it was heartbreaking and written a lot better in the book, but I personally wasn’t that touched I understand it was heartbreaking for Katniss but it felt strange and out of character

Sejanus death is probably the most heartbreaking death I’ve read in a book. Especially the fallout with his family and them never knowing that they gave all their money to the man responsible

Something about "But all Corionlanus could see was that 8 year old boy on the playground, clutching the bag of gumdrops." broke me. An innocent child killed because of Snows actions and he continued to manipulate the Plinths

*Fun Fact:* The first time I read Mockingjay, I didn't believe I had read Finnick's death right. I reread that section five times and then proceeded to look it up because I thought it was a printing mistake. I still cry whenever I think about it 😖

I had to re-read Prim's death several times because I was like that when she died and thought I couldn't be reading it right. I was so heartbroken when I read that part.

I think that Haymitch's family and girlfriend should have been added to this list, as they definitely had an effect on Haymitch, and were used by Snow to keep other tributes in line. On the whole, though, very good.

@@hansikakapoor910I didn’t know that about Clove’s actress and why they didn’t include Cato holding her. In the books though Glimmer did flirt (unsuccessfully) with Cato a lot so it wasn’t something made up for the movie. The Clove and Cato closeness actually surprised me in the book because I felt like they wouldn’t have tried to get close because only one of them could win (before the surprise announcement). District 2 took the games extremely seriously and as an honor, so Cato actually mourning clove really surprised me based on all that

I think Collins made a symbol of 'poetic justice' with Snows death, she left the reader to decide what happened to Snow, the same technique she used for Lucy Gray.

I could be wrong but I decided that Lucy didn't die. between the hanging tree song being passed down, to the way she is described in the book, something tells me that Lucy is apart of Katniss' lineage in some way

​@@ariwilliams5263 I think I read somewhere that Suzanne Collins was asked about that and she confirmed Lucy gray Baird is katniss's paternal grandmother which means katniss's fathers mother was Lucy gray but I believe she changed her name to not be found out hell in the book Lucy talks about katniss and how it will keep someone from going hungry ,a known fact Lucy told 'corio' and fast forward 64 year's and when snow meets katniss everdeen and you can feel the uter hatred he has for her and her pin the golden mockingjay , I think deep down he knows she's Lucy's descent it's just not brought up in the books I think it's why he can't be fooled of peeta and katniss's star crossed lover's story because he has had to deal with someone who he actually truly loved and had to kill her because he thought she betrayed him, it's not until he sees her reaction to peeta hitting the force feild and his heart stopping that he truly believes that their love is real but at that point she is snows enemy and "it's the ones that we love the most that destroy us"

I think fox face killed herself because she knew everything about the berries and herbs. She probably did this so her family didn’t suffer and have to watch her be in pain.

Agreed, she was way to smart and strategic for it to be a mistake. She would have know that based on the tributes left, there was no way she would win. The berries were the quickest and safest way for her to die while also protecting her family. Props to her for making it look like an accident

That's what I wondered about too, she seemed smart enough to know when it looked like she would lose, maybe she just wanted to go out on her own terms and not in an extremely brutal way like she had seem some of the others go through.

I actually don't think so. The scene in wich she showed her knowlege of wild plants was only in the movies, not in the books if I recall correctly. Additionally the berries are only naturally growing in the forests around District 12 and 13, so she didn't know Nightlocks from her childhood. She was amongst the last five Tributes wich is an odd time to commit suicide as she had a pretty good chance of winning. There was plenty of opportunities for her killing herself before that, so why trying to survive by stealing food for so long? She died because Peeta outsmarted (or outstupided?) her. Not suicide.

He missed when Enobaria ripped a tribute’s throat out with her teeth. It affected a tribute with a name because it said that Enobaria got her teeth sharpened specifically because of that.

cinna, prim, and finnick's deaths were by far the saddest. cinna knew what he was doing when he made the mockingjay wedding dress but katniss didn't or she would have stopped him. prim was the only person katniss was ever certain she loved. and finnick was so happy with annie and had been through so much it just wasn't fair. tbh rue's death wasn't as sad for me because katniss knew that she would have to die eventually. i expected it to come but cinna, finnick, and prim's deaths were so sudden and sad.

I agree. I’m actually re reading the trilogy now. Cinna’s death was just as upsetting as the first time I read it. I’m on Mockingjay and I’m dreading reading Finnick and Prim’s deaths again. Finnick was one of my favorite characters and I remember the very first time I read Prim’s death, I was shocked. I kept flipping back and forth to make sure I read it correctly.

It is strongly implied that Lyme died in the rebellion. She was a victor, but wasn't part of the "council" of victors that decided if there should be one final Hunger Game with Capitol children. She was probably killed by order of Coin, as any additional victor was a threat to her reign.

Imagine if he made an attack on titan version of this, "a tribute to 10,038,689 fallen characters"

@Someone 333 Madge died when Snow fire bombed and destroyed District 12 at the end of Catching Fire. Only 900 out of 10000 people escaped to 13, and Madge wasn't one of them unfortunately.

Sejanus and Lucy Gray from the new book HURT. I spend so long reading it and caring about the characters and then my heart broke for them.

I was so surprised when Prim died. She was one of my favorite characters and I assumed she would make it through the series. But when she died right at the end... I reread that paragraph so many times because I couldn't accept that she had just died like that 😭

Having Crane eat the berries (we assume he eats them anyway) was a great addition to the movie. I really wish that had been in the book too because it was a very powerful scene, the actor's facial expressions and mannerisms were excellent during that scene though, he pulled it off well.

@@AlexCubGaming yeah, I believe something to that effect was also said in the second book (it's been a while since I've read them so my memory is a bit fuzzy) but the scene of Crane being locked in the room to eat the berries wasn't in the books. Though to be fair, the other commenter is correct in that it probably wasn't in the books due to it being written from Katniss' point of view and she didn't witness any of that, they were able to put it in the movie because the movies were able to show more outside of Katniss' view.

So I did the math. Twenty three people died in 73 of the 75 Games (24 tributes, one winner). For the 50th, 47 died (48 tributes and only Hamish survived), in the 74th 22 died (two winners) and in the 75th, 18 died (six survived). This means in total, 1766 people died over the course of the entire series just from the Games.

I didn’t cry too much when Prim died, however, when Katniss threw cups at Buttercup, I loser it 😭😢

In the books Katniss talks about Prim and stuff, like stories about her and her ability to heal people, but we barely know her. And after Katniss starts a whole rebellion stemming from her volunteering for Prim, Prim dies after all that and it's like *the fuck was the point???*

I firmly believe that Foxface knowingly committed suicide. She was way too intelligent to just take the word or action of Peta, who she knew didn't have too adequate survival skills.

That doesn't make sense though, because the training scene was only in the movie. Most likely, she accidentally ate the berries since Nightlocks only grew around 12. Since there were many more opportunities for her to commit suicide before this and raise less suspicion. Since there were only 4 people left, a lot of the cameras would be on her. Why would she do this? There's a greater chance of her slipping up and having her family punished than if she just offed herself right away.

Definitely not, there were many more ways to do this a lot earlier, such as the mine trap she carefully hopped through, or just collecting her own nightlock. She had been taking small bits of food and watching the other tributes throughout the games. She was clearly an opportunistic scavenger who made a bad call with the berries due to hunger. She was definitely clever and observant but highly intelligent is a stretch, in the books she is not mentioned at training. Katniss only mentions her own skill in edible plant training, which other tributes presumably noticed as Haymitch warns them. Foxface, seeing Katniss and Peeta finally being together towards the end of the games, most likely assumed that anything the two gathered must be safe since Katniss was knowledgable and would have checked their food. She was in 4th place and had a good chance at winning with her strategy, no way she would throw that away so late in the games.

Coins death I saw coming after she talked to Snow. And he reminded her how they promised never to lie to each other. And how coin sent Peeta even though he wanted to kill her at first. Snow was on death's door anyway.

I had never counted the deaths in the Hunger Games. That's a lot of effort.

In mockingjay when the citizens of the capital all gather up, to find a new home, a lot of people died. The saddest for me was that little girl, whose mother died, And when Katniss saw her, she was crying over her mom's dead body. Even though we did not know her, It was still very sad.

Some may not of noticed the following: Death 50 was the girl Haymitch was against. It was the 50th Hunger Games, and made Haymitch the winner Death 75 was rue. Rue could have been the mockingjay. It also happened to be the 75th hunger games, that the rebellion begins. For those who don’t notice, this video is truly poetic. R.I.P. Prim

Interesting trivia: In the 74th hunger games the boy from District 5 is the only unnamed tribute to have attained a known kill in the franchise.

It’s kind of weirdly poetic when you think about it the first death to the last one with all of the other ones in between but I guess that’s just the hunger games for you.

I love how by talking about the deaths you’re actually explaining the whole story because every death is linked to a huge part of the story

I still think Finnick's death was the most tragic and undeserving death in the entire series - I'm still upset about it... I would honestly love an expansion on Finnick's games and what his life after the games was like both as a mentor, what happened with his "lovers", meeting annie, seeing how he joined the rebellion etc. I feel like that would be really interesting - although I doubt that'll happen :(

I enjoy Hunger games as books (I only own Mockingbird though as paperback) and the movies, saw them recently and they were perfect to me and have inspirated me much with my own writing ❤ I wonder if Snow ever heard the "Hanging tree" song and ever realized the song Lucy Grey wrote/sang was his downfall in the end.

Lucy Grey sang Hanging Tree to Snow as a coded message for them to meet at the hanging tree before they were going to run away together at the end of the prequel. He knew.

A few more confirmed deaths during the Dark Days you didn't mention: Lucy Gray's parents and siblings. Her father was shot, IIRC, and a Peacekeeper cracked her mother's head.

I remember reading the Sejanus death, it just break me. I had to stop reading for two days because it was just too much. Everything with that death was *TOO* much.

I'm not sure this counts but in the first Hunger games book rue mention a boy who had the mind of a 3 year old was killed by peacekeepers for playing with glasses

Not gonna lie, the graphic for Titus startled me when it popped up 💀

There are only two characters in all of the hundreds of books I’ve read, who’s death made me put the book down and recover. Plenty plenty plenty of characters have made me sob my eyes out, but only two so far have I had to physically put the book down for a while before I could keep reading- one was from a Stephen King novel, and the other was Finnick O’Daire.

I am truly amazed that nobody committed suicide to put themselves out of their misery rather than to save someone else, as I don't think it would be worth living in the Hunger Games universe.

There was more of that earlier on, but the capitol implemented a lot of protections to keep the tributes alive until the games.

We aren’t sure if foxface’s death was a accident or a suicide but considering foxface’s knowledge on plants it could be either

Fun fact, I personally think Seneca's crane's death was showed like that based in the ancient philosopher Seneca, who was ordered to commit suicide after trials

I always thought maybe it could be a head turner. Just imagine. Coin was lucy gray. I mean come on, in the movies voin was basically gray. I mean literally the color gray, gray uniform (not just for her), gray hair, gray building, gray everything.

@@theoutcastedchannel6212 Well, it could be, but it is unlikely. Coin is described as being "fifty or so", and Lucy Gray would be 81. But I think Lucy Gray could be Coin's mother. That would make it easier for Coin to become president since Lucy Gray would be well-known in district 13. And, I think, they are sort of similar in behavior.

@Rea Abrahamse it's unconfirmed as to whether or not it was a suicide, but i err on the side of it being true. It makes no sense for her to mess up so easily in her area of expertise. She didn't want to be in it anymore, but didn't want the Capitol/audience to KNOW she was bowing out because her family and friends would have suffered for it. So, she painted it to look like a suicide.

I don't think so. The scene in which she showed her knowlege was a movie scene, not book scene, if I recall correctly. The Nightlocks only grow naturally in the forests around District 12 and 13, so she didn't know them from childhood. She was among the last surviving Tributes and could have won by outsmarting them all. If you think that she didn't want to win (which is actually a fair assumption) there would have been lots of opportunities for her to kill herself without anyone raising an eybrow for it. But now as one of the last Survivors, all the cameras pointed at her, committing suicide would be less suspicious??? No, Peeta simply outsmarted (or better say outstupided) her by gathering berries that he thinks are edible and therefore making Foxface think the same tragically.

@@TheNerdyOrganist thing is nightlock are put in the arena quite often plus their really deadly so they would be on the plant thing, she may have committed suicide she may have not but either way she probably knew or either forgot or ate them on purpose, but either way she ate them and died

I just remember laughing at Snow’s death. Just because he was historically laughing when Katniss shot Coin instead. 😂

I always heard that Seneca Crane refused to take the Barry’s, and instead hung himself. Hence why Katniss did the dummy and hung him in catching fire

Rue was the 2nd character I ever cried over in a book. My grandma who is an avid reader knew what was going on and came to comfort me. Even in the movies I still bawled over rue. Then Mags happened and it started all over again, this time my mom comforting me since she read them before me. Even in the movie I cried for her death. Then we have Finnick who honestly deserved so much more, book and movie are so sad and heart wrenching.

Something interesting I found with the prequel was that even though it was written from Snow's perspective and shared his thoughts, it was written in third person, not first. Does anyone know why Suzanna Collins may have done this?

Watching this, and just got to Seneca Crane. In Catching Fire (film) it is implied that Crane hung himself instead of eating the berries.
