Call it something like "XXX of the Daleks" and then have it turn out the Daleks aren't *actually* there at all. One of my favorite scenes from an early (First Doctor) episode is when they arrived at a "ruined" London, and the various cast members *talked* about all the ruined and collapsed buildings, like "Oh, look, there's the Parliament Building[1] with a great big hole in it"... but you never saw any of this, all the shots were of the cast looking "past" the camera to the "ruined city", because matte paintings or models cost *money*, man! Early episodes, middle episodes, recent episodes... Rock quarries have always been a favourite setting for science fiction because they are cheap to film in, and don't have any obvious earth life or human structures to ruin the shot. Sometimes you can do a bit of camera trickery to give them an alien-looking sky color. Even Star Trek resorts to the quarry in a number of episodes.

It's funny how American movies always assume that the aliens would start the destruction of Earth with Manhattan. Actually, almost all aliens immediately go for vaguely London-looking streets in Cardiff and the rural farmlands of Wales. The most realistic alien invasion scenario probably involves time-worms who escaped from New New London in 6342 AD, possessing clothing store mannequins, scaring Welsh cows somewhere on a farm.

Things are very peaceful and everyone's happy with the new arrangement (excepting, of course, the crows and the Dunbe brothers) but everything comes crashing down when the Inexplicably Welsh Doctor arrives and decides everything is evil. The Doctor gets a good smackdown by the Dunbe brothers who are now the Welsh farmer's hired hands, and everybody learns a very good lesson about mannequins...!

The writers are aware of it. A few villains have gloated to the doctor about his hypocrisy: That he usually refuses to personally kill anyone out of his sense of ethics, but the deaths he has been indirectly responsible for are in the billions. Showing that at least some writers know just how much of a contradiction this is. I consider it a believable one, though. There are plenty of people who will lay rat poison to get rid of an infestation, but just can't stomach the thought of killing the fluffy little things with their own hands.

Even the Daleks have complimented the Doctor on his occasional ruthlessness. The writers are aware of the hypocrisy, because other characters on the show use it to try to taunt him. The Doctor preaches non-violence, refuses to carry a weapon... but he will kill, reluctantly, if he believes he has no better choice. He will kill whole planets if he believes he has no better choice. Genocide on a galactic scale if he must.

The thing about the Daleks (and I love them) is Aristotle. He said that you had to keep building tension/danger/risk... and do it with increasing frequency up to a final denouement. He said you could only have 2 such climaxes, the first and second plot points and still have them appear as climaxes in the background noise of sub plots and world building (though Athenian plays didn't go in much for stage effects, maybe a clay mask). Things like comic books get round this by nesting plots so that one plot will end, another evolve and a third will begin (or maybe only the first and last of those) but even they generally have had reboot upon reboot. The big mistake was to make Genesis of the Daleks so good back in 1975 so that ever since it's felt like sequelitis. They can't top that story.
