Ever wonder why China cymbal bells are so oddly shaped?

    I've always loved china cymbals when recorded. One of those odd realities that they are much mellower on playback than when you're in the room with them (or outside, a football field away!)

    Designed to be Horrible Sound, and sound Trash, they use them to slam at thief (Night guard used when encounter thief or suspicious) and prisoners , the sound are trashy or noisy some what like “white noise", to interfere enemies to communicate and transfer massage by voice and almost any sounding components, white noise resonates in a wide band "pitch" and disturb most sound information.

    I think the only ones that actually have that specific bell shape are made in China! All that I have seen are of a very flexible alloy that gives, though holds its shape. I seriously doubt its 80/20 bronze! Paiste uses squared bells on many of their china models, but not quite so severe. And, of course, Zildjian and Sabian couldn't care less about a square bell!

  • @MichaelJayification

    Well, I would say that's moreso right in terms of the actual origins of cymbals made in general. Zildjian was the first cymbalmaker, in which the process was handed down to the firstborn son (and in modern times of acceptance, the firstborn daughter, if one never had a son). The cymbal making process started in Turkey and Istanbul during the Byzantine empire. I'm sure that China followed suit around that time as well.

    Really? All the 'legit' chinas (from China... like Wuhans, etc.) have it, and Paiste has long included a square bell (not quite the same, but similar) on many of their china models for decades. Zildjian and Sabian pretty much stick with normal bells, however.

    Are china cymbals at risk of cracking more easily in the bell area with this format? since they would be made to be used in the way mentioned in the video. I mean, the "canadian" type, didnt have better support on the stand?

  • @drumdotpizza

    @drumdotpizza

    11 ай бұрын

    Don't really know the answer to this, actually. I've not known China cymbals to crack around the bell much, though I generally don't crack cymbals myself. I do think that the tendency to mount them upside down places far more stress on the hole in the center of the cymbal and likely makes cracking here greater. I, myself, tend to mount Chinas upright (the bell oriented like all other cymbals) for the slight additional sustain that position sometimes provides (and it doesn't place the extra stress on the hole) .

    Because true Chinas are made in China. 😉 That being said I’ve had Wuhans and other Chinese equivalents as well as Zildjian oriental trash Chinas and a really great 20” Paiste 2000 sound reflector (thought it isn’t reflective no more) that sounds awesome. But still… you can’t get a more authentic China sound than from an authentic China. Turns out some folks don’t really like a super trashy authentic China sound. No worries it’s all personal preference. ✌️😁👍
