That's a good way to put it-, johannesk1855----some of her renditions are simply beyond comparable, e.g., like this one. In some of her long, sustained notes, I think of Nina Simone at her finest, but that's just part of Eva's singing, just part of her gifts---she does so many wonderful things---there's nothing like it.

I am a musician. How I had never heard of Eva Cassidy, I don't know. What I can tell you though is that the first time I heard this song, I was mesmerized. I listened to it no less than 20 times in a row. It's perfect. Truly perfect. What's even more amazing is that it almost didn't get out because it was done live and the first night the recording never was recorded by mistake and the second night, Eva was sick and she was not happy with how it sounded... not happy with how it sounded? It's perfect. It haunts me. No one could ever do this song better. No one. What a tragedy to lose her so young.

I'm a musician also and did not hear of Eva until after she was gone, or I would have made an attempt to go hear her in person! Now, I have listened to everything that I can find that she sang; what a talent she was. She preferred to work small clubs though, not tour the world. A bit shy, a sensitive artist and lovely lady, it's so sad that we lost her too soon. RIP, Eva.

Thank you for sharing that Grant. I know what you mean. I had never heard of her either. Another thing people don't know either is she was a wonderful artist too. They made a website for her. Such a tragedy to lose this angel so young. Another one is Fields of Gold and Over the Rainbow. Everything she did..is a gem.

I am abroad, alone. I went to a coffee house today. I sat by a corner, on a table for four. I am reading this book, the Bridges of Madison County. There is a part that refers to this song, I've never heard before. I searched it, played it on my headphones. I left cause the store was closing. I kept listening to it on my way to nowhere, I didn't want to return home. It was raining and by the seventh time of listening to it, I started crying.

Autumn Leaves is a jazz standard, covered by countless musicians and singers. So often it's done in an up-tempo swing style. Eva's rendition is soul-wrenching in its expression of love and loss. It immediately made me realize that no one has ever performed this the way it needed to be performed - this is what the song is really about, and it should always be done like this. And it should be mentioned that the piano interlude is brilliant in the shape of its line, its reworking of the melody, its building to successive high points - a perfect complement to Eva's impeccable voice and arrangement. This is truly a perfect performance. You could not change a note of it.

In 2002, I was in college and "Smallville" was one of my favorite shows. One night, I was watching Smallville and there was a funeral scene at the end of the episode. The most mesmerizing voice I'd ever heard started singing Cyndi Lauper's "Time after Time." I did some research and found out it was some lady named "Eva Cassidy." A few days later, I was in Walmart and happened to be looking through the CD section when I came across a very nondescript looking CD in a rather plain, brown case that was titled "Songbird" by Eva Cassidy. On a whim, I bought it and started playing it in the car on the way home. When this song came on, "Autumn Leaves" - I literally had to pull over and focus on the song, I was so mesmerized. It moved me to tears. I later bought every CD I could get my hands on, and I have loved Eva since then. Her music has blessed me since 2002, and I'm so overjoyed to still be listening to her in 2022.

Stephen, I just listened to "Autumn Leaves" a week or so ago right after posting one of my poems, "Fallen Leaves". I was moved to tears as well. I really didn't know why until I read she had died in 1996 at the age of 33. Sometimes we feel grief and sudden sadness for no reason and never find out why. This time I know why!

I've heard Nat King Cole, Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald sing this song...beautifully. They sang it. This woman owned it. She took it apart, re-assembled it, infused it with her soul, her passions, her dreams and gave it to us. It was as if I had never heard it before. She not only gave something new to me, she drew something out of me. Her love for song aroused my love for listening. She danced with me...in a sense. I am touched. RIP Eva.

I've listened to countless versions of AL and many are excellent, but hers stands out above the rest. It not just tasteful, but also super creative, and mournful beyond this world. I need to incorporate some of her into my version. Here's a very short version I did recently recorded : kzread.info/dash/bejne/f4uetLehma3Qo9o.html That she can sing so well and play interesting guitar parts is a plus. Same. I'm a jazz player and a friend had posted her version of Over The Rainbow. After less than 30 seconds of listening I felt that she was among the eternal musical titans, Coltrane, Hendrix, Mozart, Parker, Beethoven, etc. Then I read that she never had a recording contract and died only months after this performance. Never before have I felt such devastation over someone I didn't know of until 10 minutes before that.

I would say that she epitomizes the principle of "less is more." And by this I don't mean some iconoclastic form of minimalism. What Eva did was artistically manifest in everything that served the performance of a song as an expression of what is true, and beautiful. So I think it is fair to say that she was a "transcendental" artist. In her song selection, performances, and arrangements, she strove to serve only beauty, goodness, unity, and truth, in a way that very few have come close.

I was driving when I heard this song the first time on the radio and had to pull over. I then purchased the cd and every one that came after.. i still cry when I think of her and how young she was when she died. She could pull so much emotion from a song. Her voice was like no other. She will always be one of my very favorite performers.

Playing proper clean chords, making the music the focus and not the actual playing is very underestimated. I think it is often harder and more impressive playing like this than an elaborate solo. When I hear someone playing thousand miles an hour solo on youtube, I find myself wondering if they can actually play a proper song with a little elobrate picking or with fingerstyle. Maybelle Carter and James Taylor other great players in the same style.

When Eva Cassidy adopted a new song, she didn't sing it, she transported it to an entirely different, unsuspected place. Her ability to find a new aspect, a new timbre in very familiar material is unmatched in my 50 years of listening. This song has been around all my life. I was aware of it in many interpretations from a host of great artists. Then Eva showed us what she saw in this well loved material. She unwraps an aching, haunting, ethereal lament that strikes to my softest parts. This wonderful presentation has captured my ear more completely than any vocal performance I have heard before. It is my most listened piece of music for the past five years, since I first heard it. There is a common thread in comments on Eva's videos, about the tragedy of her early loss. That is valid but I prefer to appreciate the miracle of her existence. We were allowed to hear her, love her, be amazed by her. She only found a wide audience after her death. She was disinterested in being "produced". Record companies couldn't package her. She didn't really care as long as she could perform as she wished. We are very lucky to have such high quality recordings.

Fraser ... In reading your beautiful and poignant review of Eva - and "Autumn Leaves" in particular ... I just sat here and cried. Why is it that we "lose" the most valuable of people - those who make a difference - while so many totally useless people proliferate? I "torture" myself by listening to this song - mostly because I miss this "spirit of divinity" who was taken from us unceremoniously - and far too soon. As you said in closing: "We are lucky to have such high quality recordings".

Eva is the epitome of a female singer. I am a long time musician and used to use female voice to validate equipment and speakers. She would be THE test. Her story is as tragic as I’ve ever heard and God must have needed an angel early, because He got one. She sings and plays perfect just like an angel would. I have every song she was able to record and when I am on a flight or in a stressful situation, she is my go to. I only wish I could have gone to Blues Alley to hear her live. Lanny Williams, and the other musicians are not average either. It’s one of f those rare instances when it all came together with incredible talent. She is my all time favorite female singer. It started with hearing her sing “Over the Rainbow”. Try that one…or “Fields of Gold’. A tragedy way too early in life for her and all of us who are her fans.
