Ethiopia's Mysterious Rock-Hewn Churches
11 Churches built by three angels and a king from the ground down. The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are some of the most impressive structure in the whole world, filled with history and mysteries.
During this trip, we stayed in one of Sora Lodge's treehouse which was small but very fun and cozy with a stunning view of the rolling hills and villages around.
Book any of our favorite hotels in Ethiopia here: www.davemani.com/ethiopia
The visit of the Lalibela churches themselves was an unbelievable experience. No matter how many photos you have seen about them, there is nothing better than seeing them with your own eyes. The details and sheer size of those Orthodox churches in addition of the different drainage systems and tunnels are truly impressive. Visiting the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela is an adventure on its own!
Here are all the churches we visited and explored during this tour in Lalibela which are divided in two main groups as listed by the UNESCO World Heritage.
To the north of the river Jordan: Biete Medhani Alem (House of the Saviour of the World), Biete Mariam (House of Mary), Biete Maskal (House of the Cross), Biete Denagel (House of Virgins) and Biete Golgotha Mikael (House of Golgotha Mikael).
To the south of the river, Biete Amanuel (House of Emmanuel), Biete Qeddus Mercoreus (House of St. Mercoreos), Biete Abba Libanos (House of Abbot Libanos), Biete Gabriel Raphael (House of Gabriel Raphael) and Biete Lehem (House of Holy Bread). The eleventh church, Biete Ghiorgis (House of St. George), is isolated from the others, but connected by a system of trenches.
Also, don't forget to take the time to visit Yemrehana Krestos Church. It is a very unique location and the fact that everything was built inside a cave is quite fascinating.
Finally, have a least one meal at Ben Abeba restaurant, ideally for dinner so you too can enjoy the view and a beautiful sunset!
Just in case you are looking for an amazing guide to take you around these amazing churches, this was our guy and he was amazing.

I visited Lalibela 6 years ago. I met a woman there who had spent 12 days walking to Lalibela. I'm an Orthodox Christian myself and I was stunned. She walked for 12 days in a display of devotion and I whine about having to walk up 2 flights of stairs in my office building 🤣 Ethiopia is truly an amazing country. All Christians in particular should especially visit, but everyone should visit this beautiful country at least once.

Amazing amazing vlog. How the Ethiopians built those churches is definitely intriguing just like it was with the building of the Taj Mahal in India and also the Egyptian pyramids. what a vlog!!. Kenyans do not require visa to enter Ethiopia. How I wish many would know this and visit this beautiful country to see amazing stuff. I also note that you guys did feature some of the international brand hotels in Addis that are quite expensive but, the good news is that there are a number of other 3 stars hotels near Piassa in Addis, which are very modern, nice and affordable from $20 per night.

@himm.. @Douglas: what made you think that these rock-hewn churches were built by the actual Ethiopians?? HINT#1: just about all notable structures in Abyssinia/Ethiopia have been built by foreigners [Yemeni Arabs, Syrians, Byzantine/Greek monks, Ottoman Turks, Portuguese & even Portuguese-hired Gujarati Indian stonemasons, etc.]. For example, the famous Gondar Castle/Palaces were built by Portuguese & Gujarati Indian architects in the 16th century [1500s]. These foreign builders were hired by an Ethiopian warlord-cum-emperor all the way from the Portuguese enclave/colony of 'Goa', located south of the Indian city of Mumbai/Bombay. These Portuguese architects brought with them the well-known Gujarati/Indian stonemasons & carpenters who helped build the mentioned castles/palaces, the first stone+cement bridge on the Blue Nile river, many churches, etc. These foreign builders - like many others before them - were commissioned/hired by an Abyssinian/Ethiopian warlord-cum-emperor who happen to be the biggest slave trader in Ethiopia. PS: guess how all those foreign builders, stonemasons & carpenters were paid by Ethiopian emperors or kings throughout its long history? HINT#2: by exporting slaves to the Arab & Islamic worlds, to Persia, India, Indonesia, etc, on a massive scale! ALSO, in modern times most notable structures in Ethiopia have been built - and continue to be built - by the Italians & the Chinese. AND, how do modern-day Ethiopians pay the Chinese to build the new stuff?? Ahaaa! Do you want a HINT#3 on this last aspect? SMILE. Bye.

@@yaballo1 How I wish that we could travel back in time to discover who and how some of these intriguing structures were constructed in Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan. I read the Old Testament in the Book of Esther 1, 1-2 that King Xerxes also referred to Ahasuerus ruled 127 provinces from India to Ethiopia between 459 B.C to 465 B.C. This if true, plus what you narrate above goes to show that the world has always been a global village.
@yaballo1
11 ай бұрын
@@dwamburu1 - yes, most things were built with the involvement of various communities &/or cultures. But, note too the enormous cost in human suffering it took to build the old stuff we admire today as tourists, etc. Now, the dark & sad legacy of the millennia-old & massive slave trade from the Horn of Africa [Abyssinia/Ethiopia] is still being felt in Ethiopia today. Many of the never-ending inter-tribal feuds & bloody wars in Ethiopia are BOTH a continuation & the effects of the mentioned human sufferings that fed & sustained some of the oldest slaves-trading & domestic slaves-owning systems in Africa & the World. As well as the mentioned export trade in slaves, Abyssinia/Ethiopia also had a very extensive domestic slave trade & slaves-owning/using systems on farms ["gebbars" or serfs], etc. This awful economic system lasted till as recent as the 1974 G.C. when a military coup d'état ended-up deposing the ancient Abyssinian/Ethiopian feudal system & its royal dynasty whose last head was Emperor Haile Selassie [Ras Tafari Mekonin]'. THAT IS: unfortunately, there are lots of very dark stories that are YET to be told about Ethiopia & the rest of black or sub-Saharan Africa. Africans have NOT even started telling their own history in earnest. Thanks & bye.

I've been waiting for this video! This is so interesting, and thank you for sharing this video! I noticed you didn't seem to have problems using your larger camera here as you did in Addis (except that you had to pay extra to enter the churches with it). Is that correct? Have people been OK with you filming using your larger camera in Omo Valley and Lalibela? Is it just Addis where you've had the problem?
@DaveMani
11 ай бұрын
Yes and no, the bigger the camera the more people ask question and fill intimidated by it. It also makes you a target as well when you walk around with expensive gear in any major city around the world or tourist attraction. Something to keep in mind too is that law enforcement does NOT like cameras in Ethiopia especially so they might ask questions too and tell you to stop filming sometimes. Im just used to it loll.

On the other note, the original name of the city prior to the Emperor Lalibela (name came for the one who the bees recognized his rule in local dialect) was Roha. Where does the Tikeze river originates in Lalibela near the monasteries like to represent the Jordan river and or Guihon were Israel monarchs had near Zion mount to bring water to the holy city of Jerusalem. Indeed, Lalibela was to become New Jerusalem according to the Emperor that started building it in the 12th century.
