Ethel Waters (1896-1977), was my maternal Great-Grandmother's cousin. She could be a difficult person but by all accounts was a revered, professional, exacting, dedicated, and a fine actress; receiving an Academy Award nomination for her role of Aunt Dicey in Pinky. She was the second Black actress ever to be nominated for the Academy Award (Pinky), and the first Black actress to be nominated for the Emmy Award (Route 66). Incidentally, Gail Fisher of Mannix fame, was the first Black actress to win the Emmy Award. A renowned blues singer, dancer, and actress, she was known as "Sweet Mama Stringbean" during her heyday of the 1920's & 30's. Notable songs include: Am I Blue?, Happiness Is Just A Thing Called Joe, Taking A Chance On Love, His Eye Is On The Sparrow. Waters was also the first Black to host and star in her own television special. Having long since lost her svelte figure, by the late 40's she was relegated to and made the best of matronly supporting roles-usually as domestics- in Pinky, and The Member Of The Wedding. Occasionally, she turned a starring role such as in Cabin In The Sky. Although lifelong friends, Waters gave director Vincente Minnelli fits during the filming of Cabin In The Sky due to her demanding nature and her cruelty towards then ingenue singer and co-star Lena Horne. Horne in turn took out her frustrations on co-star Butterfly McQueen. Because of racism and her difficult reputation, she was blackballed by Hollywood studio execs for years until Pinky. Later film roles include: Carib Gold, The Heart Is a Rebel, The Sound and The Fury. She continued to work in television during its Golden Age : The Ethel Waters Show (1939), Beulah (1951-52), Daniel Boone, Owen Marshall, Route 66, Encounter, The Hollywood Palace, The Barbara McNair Show, Texaco Star Theater, General Electric Theater, Climax!. In middle-age, she became a born again Christian and worked/sang fervently for the Billy Graham Crusade until her death in 1977 aged 80 (Cancer). She was married and divorced three times without issue (children). In her own words, Waters was openly and unapologetically bisexual, "The BEST that ever did it!" during her early career heydey. Her Grand-Niece is 90's R&B/House singer-songwriter Crystal Waters (Gypsy Woman-She's Homeless, Relax, Regardless, What I Need, Say, If You Feel Alright!). 👍🏽💯⭐🤗🕊️

wow oh wow I never saw this before. Pearl Bailey also had great pipes. Great duet. Thank you for this rare post.
Luminaries, sweet.
Fantastic. Rest in Paradise Pearl and Ethel. ✌️👌🙏💜
Thanks for sharing! There's SO MUCH going on in this 3 minute segment and it touches the heart on so many levels. So lovely to see this side of Pearl Bailey her reverence and sweetness and giving Ethel Waters the spotlight with grace and humility... Both of them such accomplished and timeless entertainers... We won't see the likes of them again.

ABSOLUTELY, I JUST WATCHED A DUET SHE DID WITH DINAH SHORE AND SHE HAD DINAH GASPING FOR AIR. GREAT REVERENCE SHOW ETHEL. LIKE WHEN STREISAND SANG OVER THE RAINBOW. SHE COULD HAVE BELTED IT OUT BUT SHE PULLED BACK.

Two of Americas greatest stars. I love both of them.
I like Pearl Bailey, especially in musicals. She for some reason looks very much like Queen Latifah to me.

man what a beautiful personality!! Ms Waters!
Wow two legends! Sing ladies, sing.
This is so great!
I loved them both since I was a little girl. I miss them much ⚘❤
Two of the finest and most talented women!
This is great. I was looking for some relaxing music for a short nap. This is perfect. Such beautiful harmonies and the sound of the Hammond organ is awesome. Reminds me of the working men's and social clubs in Manchester UK, in the 70's and 80's.
Beautiful!
Does not get any better than to listen to these special ladies.
Awww she's just so dog-on gorgious! Joy and love drip from her.. Surely, Ethel is madly in love with Jesus. Love u all! Keep ur eyes on the sky team! 😉

I can't watch this enough! One of my favorite performances on KZread! 2 ICONS!!
Oh man what a wonderful performance by two of our great ladies of stage and screen . Thank you so much for this post . God bless you .
thank you! made me cry, I miss both these beautiful ladies.
Thanks morefun2me2! These 2 beauties really ruled the roost, vocally, in the 20s-30s, and 40s-50s! They were both huge stars on Broadway, and did just fine in the movies! Such a treat for me! I've never seen them as a duo. Thanks so much for posting! This is wonderful!
THIS MAKES ME HAPPY AND SAD AT THE SAME TIME!!! Happy that talent like this existed and that you had to have it to become a star and SAD that although this level of talent still exist, these platforms have long since gone to the dogs. I know KIDS who can do this right now but will never become a celebrity because they don't know how to dumb down to what we now push as talent...
Beautiful!😀😀😀
Perfect skin, both of them...
Fabulous ladies.
get moment to great entertainers together brilliant
Witnessing torches being passed 🙏🏿!
How wonderful
Wow, what a treasured, heartfelt, and cherished performance from two greats!
Two of our greatest performers, kicking some serious butt for Our Lord --
There was suh’m about the beauty of these ladies…the class, the grandeur…it was sexy; it was true; it was sanctified
WOW, Pearl Bailey and Ethel Waters together. Makes me tear up

Great to be reminded of the musical and spiritual tradition from which they, and so many other great singers came. Thank you.
