Ethel Waters (October 31, 1896 -- September 1, 1977) she was an American blues, jazz and gospel vocalist and actress. She frequently performed jazz, big band, and pop music, on the Broadway stage and in concerts Ethel Waters was born in Chester, Pennsylvania on October 31, 1896, as a result of her mother's rape at age 13 Ethel Waters was raised in a violent, impoverished home. She never lived in the same place for more than 15 months. She said of her difficult childhood, "I never was a child. I never was cuddled, or liked, or understood by my family." Despite this unpromising start, Waters demonstrated early the love of language that so distinguishes her work. Moreover, according to women-in-jazz historian and archivist Rosetta Reitz, Waters' birth in the North and her peripatetic life exposed her to many cultures. For the rest of her life, this lent to her interpretation of southern blues a unique sensibility that pulled in eclectic influences from across American music

I love Ethel Waters, watched her sing many many times on the Billy Graham Crusades. I gave my life to Jesus in 1963 at age 9 and have been watching and following Billy and Ethel ever since, thats a total of 58 years. God Bless you Billy and Ethel Yes oh Yes His Eye is on the Sparrow and I know he watches Me .
What I like to say is Ethyl Waters OWNS this song. She sang it at the first NYC Billy Graham crusade in 1957. She performed in the Alto section of the choir without recognition for weeks. Billy's first major crusade was in LA in '55 and the NYC crusade was in '57. What a lot of people don't remember is that in between in 1956 he had a crusade in Louisville, KY. My twin brother and I (age 7) went forward at the '56 crusade. Billy Graham has always held a special place in my heart as a trustworthy, genuine man of God.
Can't be depressed after listening to Ethel Waters sing "His Eye is on The Sparrow."
Nobody sang it like Ethel....I’ve heard her sing it many times over the years. She still makes me cry every time.
There were over 548,000 people that have watched Whitney Houston's rendition and over 9 million have watched Lauryn Hill and Tanya Blount. Both are very good, but my favorite will always be by Ethel Waters.

Miss Waters made such an impression on me when I was a little boy. I saw her sing this in the film A Member of the Wedding ..and I was transfixed . She has remained a favorite of mine all my life .

It has been said that her mother's doctor encouraged her to abort her. Imagine the loss of how many were blessed by her faith! No easy believism in this Lady! Hollywood could use more like her!

My wife Betty, of 53 years, always loved little sparrows & they would cheer her up. They are so little & yet to think that God knows when each & every one falls to the ground is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. GOD KNOWS, HE CARES & HE LOVES YOU TOO. THE MORE YOU READ :& STUDY HIS WORD, YOU WILL KNOW THAT. We will be singing that song this week at The 1st Free Will Baptist Church on Beech Ave., in Duncan, OK at 10:30 a.m. This Sunday 1/23/22. I too remember her singing at the Billy Graham Crusades...She certainly was blessed with a unique way of singing songs that she loved. And I'll & All Christians will get to hear her sing in heaven too. Something to look forward too. Have YOU asked Jesus Christ to forgive you of your sins? There's not a 1 of us who has ever OBEYED THEIR PARENTS EVERYTIME!!! (THE 5TH COMMANDMENT) To tell 1 lie, makes you a what? A liar. There's not a man living who hasn't committed adultery, because Jesus in Matt. 5:28 says, ..."whosoever looks on a woman to LUST AFTER HER, HAS COMMITTED ADULTERY ALREADY IN HIS HEART."

I read Ethel's book His Eye Is On The Sparrow when I was 16 my grandmother lent me the book and I got saved nine years later. I was very impressed by the book. It was sad. So when I was an adult I bought the book but could not read it it being so sad and depressing. Its still on my shelf to my right in the library.

when I first heard this song it, enlightened me ; knowing that God watches over little birds, so then how much more would he do for people his most prize creation. I heard it on a movie, some wonderful black Lady with tears in her eyes, singing while playing a piano; softly, seemingly with conviction, very beautiful

unfortunately, most young black children have never heard, nor never heard of, Ethel Waters. Its now all about rap, talking about drugs, sex, and violence. Lord help us ….

I love the way Mrs Waters draws you into the song and her singing...its clears to see that she not only sings but FEELS her music. Very few have that gift while singing...
A true joy ..this lady found her way and shared it with all of us.....
Saw her perform this at my childhood church more than 60 years ago and still take comfort hearing her sing today

Ethel was born on October 31, 1896. Ethel stated singing in nightclubs and Vaudville when she was 17. One of her most memorable statements "God don't sponsor no flops." John 8 - 10 see page 318 in The Maintenence Manna by Bishop M.L. Moody. My sheep know my voice.... His eye is truly on the Sparrow!
