I always loved the way Pearl Bailey would phrase completely without regard to the meter of the band and yet always ease right back into the rhythm to finish the phrase in perfect time. That’s Jazz.
You can't get better than Bailey and Channing. I covered Ms. Bailey as a journalist. She was brilliant, classy and sassy, and wonderful to be around. My wife covered Ms. Channing and said the same about her. They were the very BEST.

I saw Pearl perform in a NYC night club around 1980. A great opportunity!❤❤❤ I saw Carol perform in HELLO DOLLY in her last tour on Broadway. When she walked on stage for her entrance to the restaurant, she looked at the audience with those big eyes, as if she was saying, "Now you applaud!" Of course it became a standing audience of love.❤❤❤
Fabulous. They don't make them like this anymore. Carol and Pearl -- what a great show!! Thanks so much for sharing.

Sad, but true.
Back when famous women looked beautifully unique, their personalities just beam from them. They're dressed beautifully, elegantly, and they are enjoying each other and the crowd so much.
These two ladies were 'it.' Utterly unique Pearl & Carol.
Carol's impersonation of Marlene really got me, she was an incredible performer. The funniest thing is that when she was on stage she was so heightened that it seemed like she was doing a Carol Channing impersonation!
3 great stars !!! Carol Channing. Pearl Bailey .. and Bob Mackey !!
Pearl Baily in complete control. Her phrasing is incredible
So beautiful to see these fashionistas. Such elegance and talent. Thnks for internet technology and social media. Magnificent

She was incredible and could sing and act anything. I'd give anything to have seen her play Dolly in her own unique way. I got to see Carol Channing in the role and it was the first time I ever saw anyone play the role that actually made sense and totally made the show the comedy it is. And I'd bet Pearl Bailey was just as spectacular in her own way....

You're just young. We older ones know all about her. She was one of the best entertainers. I'm surprised they never even mention her.
Astounding! Carol Channing was the first-ever Dolly in the 1960's run of "Hello, Dolly!" and Pearl Bailey was one of the last (Ethel Merman closed the multi-year run.) The notion of putting Channing and Bailey together was inspired. There could not be two more dissimilar performers, and yet - they each have a sense of tremendous humor, ebullience, and freedom as performers. They complement each other beautifully. Some people have carped, online, about the fact that this concert-for-television was rough around the edges, but --- with two stars who are not afraid to be silly, that "looseness" (with costume malfunctions and occasional uncertainty about blocking) only adds to the buoyant sense of fun. I wouldn't change a moment of this priceless concert. It's marvelous. I must add that I sat in the audience for a 1978 revival of "Hello, Dolly!" starring Channing and Eddie Bracken, in New York, in 1978 -- and some eight years later, at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida, I saw Pearl Bailey in concert with her drummer husband, Louie Bellson, and orchestra. I am so pleased to have seen two great female stars, in person, who were larger than life. Oh, the energy and joy that each of them radiated! Would that it could have been bottled and sold.
I wish i had been around when this happened ...they are fabulous!!!!!!

Well well well I remember this from years ago and always wanted to see it again. I've just showed my 8 year old nephew who's theater mad and he couldnt take his eyes off them. He said they dont make them like this any more and they never will again he laughed everytime something went wrong and said if that happened now a fuss would be made not a joke and a laugh and carry on with the show.

Two legendary musical comedy stars performing together is amazing. What a fabulous moment for television history! Wonder if she confided to Pearl that she was had African blood in her Cain’s. Had she revealed that earlier she would never have become a star. Wonder however if those other black celebrities know. Nevertheless both she and Pearly Mae became legends in their own time.

Admired, respected, beloved; both of them!!!!!
Class, sass and brass. They had it all. These are the type of shows that you just won't experience on today's stages. However, it is shows like this that set the pace great shows, comics and more. They sang, danced and gave their audience a real show without stripping and gyrating. The costumes are gorgeous. They worked so well together. I enjoyed EVERY moment and hated to see it end. Thank you for posting this marvelous Broadway production.
❤️❤️ And how beautiful is Pearl!! She glows and I admire and love how she owns that stage equally. Beautiful and a real credit to her soul or amazing parents. Such repression back then, so I admire and love both these women's hearts! Real love and soul is NOT prejudice. Anyone who disagrees is a racist! 😂🤣 ..I'm laughing, but I'm actually serious! I just wanna touch hearts with real people... Don't care what race creed or colour.. bring it on!!! 😊❤️
This was so amazing! ❤🔥💝💘Brought back a gazillion memories for me and my childhood. All the people from that time who enjoyed these talents with me are all gone. I'm not crying YOU're crying 😢
There will never be another one like these two, ever, they were Americas great.
They were the greats!
A friend was in final 3 up for Cornelius in Channing’s last Dolly on Broadway. He was 6’4” flat foot and they cut him because of his height. Miss Channing ran and caught him at the door. wrapped her arms around his waist (as far as she could get) and said “You’re fantastic my dear, but you’re just too TAWLL” He floated home. 2 days later he was called in to audition for a scheduled revival of Guys and Dolls. The director hired him and said that “Carol was right,,,tall as a redwood and voice like Howard Keel.” Rick danced all the way back to Brooklyn.
What a trio! Pearl, Carol and me singing along.

Thank you for this acknowledgment! It's been one of my treasures for about 17 years, I'm glad I can share it with the world!
Loved Pearl Bailey and she was "older" when I came along. She just had that something that made you interested. I did go back and see Carmen Jones (which Dorthy Dandridge certainly deserved an Oscar for hr acting. My girl was running and jumping on and off trains in heels and tight skirts! Women were So Bad Back Then. Still Are, but differently. ) Beat Out That Rhythm On The Drum! And She told Carmen, Keep One Man For The Ride and One Man For Something Else. Lol. Carol Channing saying that she never touched sugar still strikes with me.
Thank you for sharing. They were breathtaking!
Another of my old favorites: falling in love again
Loved this
Oh my! What an absolute delight! Thank you for the fabulous post 🙏🏼
Notice how Carol keeps coming into a musical phrase late or finishing it late. She is always a beat slower than the music, dragging it back a little. That is 100% intentional. Carol said if you keep the band and the audience waiting for you , they listen harder, anticipating for your entrance and wondering when you will arrive. That means you have them paying attention. Every time I hear Carol sing one her standards, she decides her own pacing, not the band.
Those ladies really put the FAB in FABULOUS! Thank you for uploading this!
Thank you so much for posting this!!!!
True talent!
