I am about as non-religious as one can be, but I am still incredibly moved by Mahalia's singing. It's not just her voice, unmatched to this day, but also her stage presence and intensity. She's my favorite singer, far and away. I kinda wish I were at least a little religious so I could get even more out of Mahalia Jackson's music. Without religion, Mahalia clearly could not have done what she did and could not have been who she was. And without religion, I probably cannot fully appreciate her music. I guess I went to the wrong kind of church when I was little, a somber and depressing affair, as I recall, with even more depressing music.

Mahalia was a Greatest gospso singer, but she clearly did not know much about the blues! I totally disagree with her statement that "the blues is about people singing from depression and despair. And then she is quoted as saying that gospel music is about hope for tomorrow" etc. Well, while she seemed to separate gospel and blues by pitting gospel music above blues, I highly disagree with her. Gospel and Blues go hand in hand. Both are from the black experience and the hard times of the Jim Crow South. They were born out of depression and suppression of black people, who ate the greatest and most resilient humans who ever walked the earth! The Original People! If only they collectively knew The greatness from whence they came from! They are Waking Up! And will Rise Up to take thier rightful places at the Appointed Time! Hotep!

The poor of any colour, especially *female* poor, are the suppressed & resilient, it's in all races. The (white) 'undesirable' poor of 18thC UK were kidnapped off streets, shipped to US never to see family again, sold as slaves; it's what happens when people ignore Jesus' command of agapē for all, choose money as 'god' instead, act like demons.

I also loved Mahalia! I was 6 yrs. old when she passed. I was so sad I would not see her on television anymore! I love this song so much, because it reminds me of my parents! She was the greatest Gospel artist, in my opinion!
Was thinking about my Mother its almost Mother's Day and she has went home...I miss you Momma I love you just as you loved this woman of God.
Thou her songs may seem simple, they were actually very deep & heart-felt. If you don't know of Mahalia, you need to watch documentaries about her. She suffered a lot of pain in her early years. As a result, she delivers her heart over; to those who listen to her.

The great, late Mahalia Jackson, she sings with power. I remember her music playing through out the house as a lil girl growing up. The powerful voice lifted the hearts of every soul in the house and if the window was open the neighborhood rejoiced as well. God bless your perfect soul Mahalia.

One of my 2 favorite Christian songs ever. Miss Mahalia is always perfect. I do t know who gave thumbs down to this , but they must surely be cold hearted heathens. She was the greatest EVER.
May God blessed this beautiful lady with her lovely voice.
Dinah Shore was so gracious. That was a beautiful introduction. I miss her as well as Mahalia Jackson.

Hello Katie How are you doing today?
Love her voice and sprit still in 2014 her music is alive
Thanks Mahalia for reminding us of the importance of prayer. We have an High Priest that canst be touch with the feeling of our infirmity.
This song has gotten me through many a day!
Ero un ragazzino quando ho udito per la prima questa canzone e nonostante ,da allora , è trascorso un tempo molto lungo ,ancora mi commuove!
Glory to God in the Highest!!
Ms. Mahalia's voice feeds my spirit, wakes it and talks to it!!!

Powerful just found out about this lady today! What an annointed beautiful woman of the Lord!
That voice goes right in to the bone
Her voice is that of an Angel.
Mahalia was told that she would make a great Blues singer, In response she said. “ I could never sing the Blues. The Blues are songs of A PEOPLE depressed, in a pit yelling for help. Whilst my Spirituals sing of HOPE, FAITH & HAPPINESS.” JJJ

Mahalia's answer is great, but it wasn't the 'enemy trying to tell a child of God'; just someone admiring her voice; the Blues isn't of the devil!
What a voice... love her singing!!!
This is awesome!!!! Queen of gospel!🙏💕🎙🎶❤
2019 December....still lovely
Carried away by your voice ✊
I just love this! So powerfully hopeful and healing in the passages of music.
