Eric Edgar Cooke : The Night Caller

Season 05 : Episode 16 :
Eric Edgar Cooke was born into a life of violence and abuse. A childhood of being bullied by his father and classmates created a helplessness inside of him that he needed to rid himself of. He wanted to feel more powerful and the only way he thought he could do that was by taking life.

I know of several cases today where people serving in US prisons should be exonerated because evidence objectively proves their innocence, but judges won't even hear their appeals. One man was locked up when he was 18, and is 61 now, wheelchair ridden with a very bad heart. DNA evidence and witness testimony proves his innocence, and someone else has confessed to the murder he's accused of but nothing is being done. His health is very bad and it's looking like he'll die before he sees freedom. Even if he is free before he does, all of his family is dead so he'll have nowhere to go and no way to support himself. It's very sad and, yes, enraging.

When we were in highschool learning about the Fremantle Prison for Modern History, John button came in to talk to us about his ordeal. He was an incredible man and taught us so much about the judicial system then and now. I went to school right near the old prison and it was really interesting to see someone who had been a part of that era still helping people today. I can't imagine the things he went through, but he's used it as a reason to keep speaking out which I think is really admirable.

Ahh, this brings back memories. I was born in Perth on 8th August 1959. The very same day that Cooke attempted to kill someone. I remember as a little kid my parents talking about this guy and he was kind of like the Boogeyman to us kids. The thing about leaving doors and windows open was true. Summer in Perth was brutal and air conditioning was something only rich people had. My siblings and I used to put foam mattresses on the floor in the hall leading from the front door. We'd leave the front door literally wide open to let in any breeze from outside. Sometimes it was so hot we slept on mattresses on the back lawn with just a sheet over us to protect us against the mozzies. Of course by this time Cooke had been captured and people felt safe enough to start leaving their doors and windows open again. The death penalty was abolished after Cooke's execution. Our sleepy little city had our very own Richard Ramarez style night stalker. The first time I saw a picture of him I thought he was the literal devil.

How many Aussies are there on here? Lol It seems like it might be an unpopular opinion but I kinda prefer hearing about non-Australian cases because I've already heard so much about the Aussie cases. I know it's probably new and interesting to seppos and poms, but for me it's like yeah ok cool, another Ivan Milat video. I already know the bloke well enough that when I see a Nissan Patrol of a certain age I think of Ivan and the Belangalo sign with the bullet holes in it is ingrained in my head. I'd rather hear a more obscure case from the US. That said, this particular case is heavily overlooked and not nearly as overdone, so props to Jiles for that. Beats another video about Martin Bryant

What's additionally tragic about innocent people being incarcerated is the fact that most of the money bestowed in reconciliation goes to the lawyers who represent them (in certain cases I've seen within the United States). Many people also continue to believe that despite the acquittal, the person is actually guilty anyway. When I saw a special on this aspect of it, my heart just sank. Not only have the wrongly accused been damaged, but the damage apparently continues sometimes.

I always have to listen to first couple minutes of these videos 3+ times if I’m multitasking, which I usually am. Your introductions are always so packed with information, there’s no fluff, and each sentence has something in it that is relevant to the location/setting or personal history of the offender in the story. I love it and hate that I have to replay the first 1-3 minutes so many times, EVERY TIME but the location, and year that it occurred is extremely important IMO.

And the U.S. justice system continues to behave just as Australia did back then in that once they have a conviction, they do everything possible to keep innocent people in prison. Cooke was held in Fremantle Prison in Western Australia. My friend’s dad was a criminal lawyer in Perth Western Australian. His adult son was working with him. One day he went with his father to visit a client at the convict built, Fremantle Prison. As they went into the prison proper, and the big heavy gates closed shut behind them, his father turned to his adult son and said - “Do you smell that? That’s 100 years of wank.” This very true story has grossed me out for years. This video reminded me of it as, from memory Cooke was held and hanged at Fremantle Prison. There was some sort of plaque near the entrance gate referring to his being the last person executed etc. Years and years later, when the prison closed down and restoration work was being done on the huge stone walls and structures, 2 friends of mine worked there as stone masons. It’s a strange place that just makes you feel uneasy and creeped out. They found some amazing graffiti hidden under layers of plaster. Drawings done by the original convict prisoners. Thanks for sharing this video and thanks for the memories 🙂🐿

In this context I read it as referring to both; the prisoners engaging the physical act of wanking as well as being less than desirable humans

I know, the ripple effect. It not just these evil people . We all cause ripple effects. If we are good then good comes back around. It's sad someone couldn't have just hugged this killer something anything to keep that kind of evil in him and have good things come out of his life... Enough to write a college paper over lol.....

Really great production again. No flashing lights, a few old photos, and brilliant narration. And so many victims, dead, impaired for life, his own children living with the awful knowledge. And the "Courts" ----

@thisismonsters This is hands down one of my favorite channels. You go above and beyond even that one case we're some of the info was wrong you manned up spoke with the family and even redoing an episode with the proper information. My favorite is when you say what you and the rest of us are thinking. Thank you for another stellar video man!

So fascinating ! I’ve lived in Perth my whole life and I never knew about this historical case. Well done on constantly bringing us such great content. Perth by the way is the murder capital of Australia perhaps due to it’s isolation. It may be worth your while to visit here a bit longer! There is the case of David and Catherine Burnie for example who where a married couple and definitely fit in the Monsters category!

Nature vs nurture... which factor is greater in creating a human monster? In this case, I think it's pretty clear that nurture was the primary cause. When a monster had a good upbringing with an evil nature, I think society tends to hate them more than the same evil deeds done by a monster with an abusive upbringing with an uncertain nature to them.

He was born disabled and produced disable child. I wouldn't be so fast to blame it on "nurture" bearing in mind these facts. A lot of people were abused as kids and never go on murder spree.

Good nurture + bad nature of a savage murderer / torturer I believe would always be the same monster, or worse, if they were given bad nurture. But the reverse of this I don't believe is true. Bad nurture + ??? Nature of a savage murderer / torturer (aka "monster") take this sample in a parallel universe and give it good nurture and the resulting person could be a saint among us, proving that the nature of the person was actually moldable and greatly dependent on the nurture they received when young. This is my belief. Unfortunately it cannot be proved true through testing since time travel is not possible.

Im in South Australia 🇦🇺 and i remember all this happening. The 50s, 60s and even into the 70s we did leave our doors unlocked. Everyone knew eachother, our neighbours were Aunty and Uncle..we played on the road in front of the house and went for walks on hot summer nights and yes we left our doors opened. It was an innocent time to grow up in..these horrific murders by him were something that none of us thought could happen. But they did, and it was pure evil, i remember him being hung and even though i was a little kid, i remember thinking that he deserved it and it was for the best.

I have a serious question. So, this video triggered a memory I haven't thought about in years and suddenly it just clicked that someone might have attempted to kidnap me, thinking I was a woman or something. It was dusk out and I was jogging alone when suddenly a guy in his early 20s pulled up right next to me, stopped, opened his car door, and almost got out. We made eye contact and he said "oh sorry, I thought you needed a ride" before speeding off. At the time, I thought it was odd but a stupid misunderstanding. Like maybe he was tired and socially awkward. It just occurred to me that it didn't make any sense. Why did he open his car door? It was obvious that I was jogging away from his vehicle, why did he assume I needed a ride? Wouldn't a normal person roll down their window first and ask if I needed one? He also took off once we made eye contact. Now I'm starting to wonder if he thought I was a woman jogging alone and he was seconds away from trying to kidnap me. This happened around 2005 in Allegan Michigan and I'm wondering if this is all in my head or if I should call the police in case any joggers went missing.

Wow, that’s spooky! Could you describe the man 17 years later? Definitely report it if you can give a description, otherwise I’m afraid they’d have nothing to go on. Reading your story scared me, so I can only imagine how you must have felt. I hope this memory doesn’t affect you now, it’s hard to forget something like this but try not to allow it to mess with you. I am very glad you didn’t get in :)
