Lyrics:
Sailing down behind the sun
Waiting for my prince to come
Praying for the healing rain
To restore my soul again
Just a toerag on the run
How did I get here?
What have I done?
When will all my hopes arise?
How will I know him?
When I look in my father's eyes
(Look into my father's eyes)
My father's eyes
When I look in my father's eyes
(Look into my father's eyes)
My father's eyes
Then the light begins to shine
And I hear those ancient lullabies
And as I watch this seedling grow
Feel my heart start to overflow
Where do I find the words to say?
How do I teach him?
What do we play?
Bit by bit, I've realized
That's when I need them
That's when I need my father's eyes
Then the jagged edge appears
Through the distant clouds of tears
I'm like a bridge that was washed away
My foundations were made of clay
As my soul slides down to die
How could I lose him?
What did I try?
Bit by bit, I've realized
That he was here with me
I look into my father's eyes

He never met his Father....Eric was the illegitimate son of a Canadian flyer who was in GB during the War...knocked-up his Mom, then returned to Canada. His young Mom then lived with her Mother and gave birth to Eric. As a cover story, Eric was raised to believe his Mom was his SISTER and that his Grandmother was his Mother !! So I believe his search for his Father will never be over...perhaps he wrote this song to "air" his pain relating to this life issue just as his "Tears in Heaven" was written to help him deal with the loss of his child Connor who died tragically. Our love of his great music is rooted in his life tragedies without which they would never have been written. He always has been a "Blues-Rocker" and a great song writer who has had MULTIPLE successful careers spanning literally more than 1/2 Century. Thanks man....you have made your mark with millions of loyal fans and WILL do it again with generations yet unborn.

Beautifully written and thank you so much for sharing your heartwarming story... My father was an alcoholic and abused my mother and us 4 kids... Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful thoughts on Eric he is a great gift from Our Father God I was abused by my alcoholic father until I was 13yrs old and never wanted to look into his eyes... Music is my therapy and rock is my heart 1st. I too have loved this man's musical talent. Have been listening to him since I was 13yrs old and never heard this song before and I was doing a top 5 guitarist on my music therapy group through msgr and of course Eric was there and I searched for the song choice I wanted to use and I don't believe in accidents or coincidence's... I believe God led me straight to this song and at first the title of course wasn't right but I listened to the lyrics and knew God and Eric who wrote the song flipped the script and I cried with love and joy with the most precious words of understanding exactly what they meant... I had already forgiven my father a long time ago and God has blessed me with 4 son's and plus 1 1/2 brother I helped raise and they are grown now ... My oldest is 43yrs and Christopher is in the Ellis Unit serving a long sentence for drugs that I know he would otherwise be dead... My heart is broken but I'm so grateful for his life and God's mercy on him... He has a son who just graduated and we have not seen since he was a child.. Through the music and prayer warriors for our children all around the world I dedicated this song to them and played through out the day I tell you that again that prayers work by 9pm that night my grandson on msgr contacted me... I was overwhelmed with joy and love to hear from him and asking about his father, my son... I thank you Mr. Eric Clapton for your music that touches us in our hearts!!! We are all blessed by it through you and I say thank you for all you give of yourself with the precious talent through Our Father God in Jesus Christ name Amen... I apologize for the long reply as I have never done this before... I really enjoyed reading your words of his lifetime and would like to know more and read his autobiography too... Can you tell me the title please...

He was a proud Bosnian Croat, didn’t tolerate fools, was never politically correct and a bit of a cranky blunt instrument but never has there been a man who loved the four generations of his family like he did. He would literally take the shirt of his back to help anyone in need and never asking for anything back in return. Lost my father today he was 93. It would take too long to tell you about him. He was steady as the rain, dependable. He had kind brown eyes but that wasn't his most obvious characteristic. I felt like I was closer to my Mom but my fathers eye's were always there. Not judging or panicking, rarely crying. They gave me strength.

I lost my Dad this February. He was 92. I thought because of the age it would help with his passing... No. How much wisdom our Dad's have given us? Let us pass this on to future generations the best we can! Loving thoughts Your way 🙏

Total un-understandable that this Soulful song gets 283 dislikes, it's played with musicianship and great Spirit, open your Heart and let the message enter, Clapton poured his whole Soul in this Song which has nothing to do with only technique but life's experience and feel. Eric you're a first class maestro who has learned us the essence of the Blues. You have my love.
