Just lost my father a few hours ago. This is the first song I wanted to hear. He used to play this song all the time when I was young and I with him all the time. As I got older, careers, life, and family of my own I barely got to see him. I have so much regret and hurt for not making more time to see him. The pain is heavy right now. Love you Dad!

I never had a father when I was born...he and my mother gave me up when I was about 2 months old to drugs and sex and other things and my whole life I never had those figures in my life and now that I’m 18 almost 19...it has never hit me harder and this song hits me so so deep cause I never got to have a father to teach me how to play catch or throw a football or any of that. I just wish I could look in his eyes and know that he loves me but he wants nothing to do with me and now I’m going off to college and he never told me one time my entire life he was proud of me nor my mother. I’m so grateful my grandmother raised me to the man I am today.

No intention to belittle you guys at all, and it really sucks when your dad goes. We all do of course. He ain't in heaven btw, or hell for that matter. The dude will be everywhere all the time, and you can bet your bottom dollar he will not forget who you are.

I think the last time I heard this song was when I was 6 or 7. I was crying (over the loss of my grandfather) and my daddy stopped at a gas station to hold me in his arms when this song was playing. 12-13 years later, I'm listening to this song and reminded of my dad, whose been dead for almost 6 years now and I cry thinking of how tenderly he held me. We may not have had the best relationship, but this song reminds me of how much I actually miss him.

I miss my parents. Lost my dad when I wad 11 and my mom at 38. I want to live life today that would make them proud of me. And to know they would still love me. I love the verse "Bit by bit ... I realized. I realized: I looked into my father's eyes."

Never a time when I hear this song, when my eyes don't get watery thinking of my old man, miss him greatly and literally taught me everything there is to know on how to be a Man, from working hard for what you got, to love and protect your wife and kids. Only lesson he didn't teach me is living without him, and his guidance. He prepared me to find the light at the end of the tunnel, but not live with out him, he was my Hero, my best friend, and my confidant and voice of reasoning. I hope one day my kids remember me just like the way I remember my old man. Those of you that still have your dad, cherish him and let him know how much they mean to you, everyday......

I remember hearing this on Nash Bridges, when his father collapses from a heart attack. This song plays while he's standing over his resting father in the hospital. That memory always makes me tear up. Such a beautiful song.

From when I was born, my father was telling me that I was a mistake, and that I was not wanted. My earliest memories were of him having no patience with me, anger, and being beaten. And yet, in his last days, I was the one there who realized that his time was up. Shunned by my siblings, I could not be there for his last moments, because I had seen months of him breaking down to nothing. I actually came to this song for my daughter. Because I know that everything I never had as a kid, I give to her. I will get this song for her, and hope that in years to come, she will relate it to me.

I've had many dreams where my father is just smiling at me and I can hear his thoughts, almost like telepathic. Those have been the most special, because the feelings are so real and I believe are a real message from the other side.

My father is a living legend, a true hero! Decorated military man, navy captain, company CEO, self made man, enthusiastic about fishing, loving husband and greatest father. Everything I've done right in my life so far, he has influenced in a way for the better. Thank you for everything dad! May you one day proudly exclaim "That's my son" to what I have achieved. you're not the only one who lost a father. I lost my father, too, last March 2017. He was my first music teacher as well. He died not because of disease or complications but from a broken heart after my mother passed away last November 2015 due to cancer. I thought I would give up playing music because I felt part of me died with him yet still, here I am... still playing music like he always plays. After he died, I asked him, "Dad, how can I carry your legacy? How can I carry you? I feel I can't go on without you." Yet, I am still here. Still playing and playing the music he played when he was still alive. I realize: I am indeed continuing his legacy but carry few things at a time. Hope this helps you a lot. You, me, and everybody else lost their fathers but life goes on. I am sure your dad is watching you and you have to keep moving. But his legacy on you, will always be there. Carry few things at a time and sooner or later, it's comforting before you know it. God bless.

eric was my dads favorite singer. I have always liked eric clapton too. I lost my dad almost 2 years ago and its really changed me.. there are days where i just wish i could sit with him and feel that feeling of comfort and saftey that we all took for granted as kids..

Whenever I couldn’t be near my dad or thinking about him and my brother in another country I would play this song, and dance and sang out loud. Few days ago my dad passed away, my brother couldn’t be near and this song saved me. A beautiful song dedicated to his Father.. I had a wonderful and sweet Father and he was my best friend and not a day goes by that I don't miss him. He was the perfect Daddy for me..

Eric never looked into his father's eyes. When he was 12yrs. old Eric found out that he was a bastard. His older sister was actually his mother. His father was a Canadian soldier who was stationed in England. Eric located his father's whereabouts in Canada, three months after his father had passed away. If you read the lyrics, you'll see that Eric was actually imagining what he would have done if he had actually met his father. Then the song takes on a very sad and haunting "what if".
