    This (nearly) brings me back to my flying days in the 1970s, in the UK. Zero digital data and minimal instruments (actually we didn't even have or need a radio then) This is fabulous seat-of-the-pants flying. Good of your wife to hack it over ground. This whole Oshkosh adventure is going to be great to watch. Thanks too for the plain, simple editing with no frills and especially no intrusive music. Excellent stuff.

    WOW! So glad the Coupe is making her way back to Oshkosh. Not quite retracing the track from 2002 but close and I'm enjoying reliving the trip my dad and I made seventeen years ago. Hope N94805 wins first place again!

    Thanks for finding me on here, James. Would love to have met your dad. And to meet you. Maybe we can swap stories some time. I would also love to see some of your pictures; I have become friends with another previous owner, who had 805 in the 70's, and he's sent a bunch of pictures that I can share with you.

    I love the way these old birds look. :) I would be so tempted to make little fake gun turrets that could be stuck on just for fun now and then, or even for giggles while it sits in the hanger. lol Beautiful classic lines that will never go out of style.

    James, when you were flying over the mountains, were you following valleys/passes with a highway below you most of the time? Or were you going rogue over the wild? Looking forward to your next installment. Oh! I love that you do not overproduce your video with a bunch of music. Just pure flying! Cheers!

    I mainly followed the valleys and passes. I thought about turning off on a short-cut at one point, but... those mountains and the winds are pretty intimidating. What would happen if you did go down in them?! Thanks for the comment!

    Yeah, feel sorry for your wife and son, as I have also driven that Nevada stretch way too many times... it gets boring very quickly. :-) But from the air, it seems much more fun. But everything is more fun from the air...

    Just watched part 1, great video. In 2007 I was working at the power plant in Beowawe, Nv. and on my day off, I drove to Elko and got a ride in Sentimental Journey, one of the B 17's that travel the country like Aluminum Overcast. Also, if you don't mind, what camera are you using when filming from the cockpit and is the wing camera using the adhesive mount. Thanks, Bob

  • @JamesGood

    @JamesGood

    Hi Bob. I use a GoPro Hero 3's (they are a few years old now) both inside, and on the wing. The wing mount is a suction cup designed for sports car racing.

  • @Graham_Wideman

    @@JamesGood Just a suction cup? That's impressive! Sports car application doesn't have to contend with altitude reducing the atmospheric pressure that the "suction" is relative to!

    Hey George. My Ercoupe is a 1946 415-c LSA. I love it. I have the C85 Stroker engine, which means it has pretty much all of the guts of an 0-200. Pretty sweet engine. If you haven't already done so, join us on the "Ercoupe Owners and Enthusiasts" Facebook page. Cheers!

    Ha, if you really like Oshkosh, move here, plenty of vacant lamb, for me, a hours drive, and since we live this close, want us to drive rather than fly in. Nor very crowded in 2020, something about covid.

    How well does the ercoupe handle crosswinds?

  • @JamesGood

    @JamesGood

    5 жыл бұрын

    Very well. Land it crabbed into wind, and as soon as the mains touch down, the forward momentum pulls the aircraft straight, and you're heading straight down the runway. Once the nose wheel is down, the wing has a negative incidence, and you won't be flying any more. It's a good setup.

  • @kenthompson3730

    @kenthompson3730

    4 жыл бұрын

    Shortly after I got my Ercoupe, with no rudder pedals, I landed at an airport with 20 knot direct crosswinds. I held it in a crab all the way down. Touched down with the mains still crabbed. It automatically swung the nose to pointing right down the runway. As soon as the nose touches down, it cannot fly again because the wings are set at a negative angle of attack. It’s genius engineering. Taking off, once you get your rotation speed you have to positively pull back on the yoke or it will stay on the ground no matter how fast you’re going. If you take off in a crosswind, it will automatically turn into the wind upon rotation and you just climb out crabbed.

    How noisy is it without a headset on ?

  • @JamesGood

    @JamesGood

    It's noisy, but not unbearably so. Probably not great for prolonged periods. I believe many people used to fly without headsets when these aircraft were first produced.

  • @JamesGood

    BTW, I do wear a headset (maybe you thought I didn't). It's an in-ear, passive noise canceling set called a 'Clarity Aloft'.

  • @JamesGood

    With my headset, it's not too noisy. Probably like being in a car on a freeway. I don't fly without, only brief taxi's, so not really sure how it is without the headset.

    It's a shame your wife won't let your son fly with you. How much crosswind can the Ercoupe handle on take offs / landings?. I'm used to flying out of Yellowstone Regional where the wind can really make things interesting.
