Thanks for another great podcast Selma! A tip on your quilting….once you’ve sewn one strip of squares iron the seams all in one direction. For your next strip iron the seams in the opposite direction. You’ll find when you sewn the strips together they almost ‘lock’ together and your corners will match up. I’ve made many quilts that involved some stretching and smooshing to try to line up corners! Just like knitting- there are no mistakes….just unique design elements 😜

I was going to say the same thing. Great tip! Nesting your seams will really help. You'll be able to feel them lock together with you fingers. Pinning the seams also helps when you're sewing strips.

It is a small world, isn’t it. I have been watching your knitting podcast quite a long time. Once you have mentioned your mother’s name and it really soud familiar for me. Today I have had a little chat with my dear neigbour - and she is your aunt. As young girls my two late aunts have worked in the farm of Lilja-family in Ylihärmä. Small world indeed.

I love all the inspiration you give, thank you😊 I’ve made a lot of tee’s with round yokes where the short rows are added after I’ve set the sleeves. The turns are then placed under the arms, that works perfect for raising the back of the neckline.

Lovely episode, I love the color of your Springline tee, it suits your eyes and complexion so well. Great quilt experience, I love your choice of fabric. I listenned as I was knitting on a tiny hat for my daughter's baby, I had made a few hats but baby decided to come early at 34 weeks gestation, he is very tiny (2.4 kg, 44 cm) he gave us a big scare but he is now going to be OK even if he will be staying in the hospital for a while. None of the hats I made fit, so I am now quickly knitting a very small hat. Thanks for keeping me company as I knit for this little treasure.

I had the same issue of too much fabric with the 'No Frills' sweater and had to stop my sleeve increases early while continuing on with the body increases. I think the problem is with the inherent construction of a raglan not suiting an oversized sweater because you are adding to a sleeve at the same rate as the body. By the time you get to a larger bust circumference the sleeves are too baggy. The simple solution is to stop increasing once your desired sleeve circumference is reached while continuing to increase in the body only. My favourite classic but elevated drop sleeve sweater is the 'Dartmoor' by Caidree, which has lovely shoulder shaping and i-cord detailing. I've played around with the gauge and gotten great results on a couple of knits. My ravelry queue has just grown again as it always does following one of your podcasts!

Our adult daughter requested and Anker Tee out of turquoise Holtsgarn Tides. I had forgotten how much work it was to make one for myself maybe two years ago and agreed. First modification, based on mine, was to add german short row shaping to the neck ribbing before satrting the yoke pattern. It turned out well and fits so much better for wearing. Also, on mine I had knit the first severeal inches flat, so that I had an opening in the center front, added cute little pearly buttons and crochet loop closures. I'm planning on a fall version, with heavier yarn and a larger stitch gauge. I've seen a sample and it is a nice style even in the larger gauge.

I was initially puzzled by your sleeves on the Lento, but I went back to my two podcasts about the sweater, and it appears that I did have a lot of excess fabric as well. I ended up decreasing much more rapidly than the pattern suggests, and this reduced the sleeves to a more reasonable size. It is a "sweatshirt" style, but the sleeves were too much for me. I do now enjoy the sweater. As always, I enjoyed the episode!

thank you for the podcast, I look forward to each of them. I agree on dropped shoulder construction. In my opinion if one has sloping shoulders and "big" arms they make you look frumpy, which is my case. I usually go for raglan or set-in sleeves, they look neat and fit well. Unfortunately for me dropped shoulders are everywhere at the moment.

I too have been rethinking the practicality of making large, bulky wraps like the Half+Half Triangles Wrap that has been so popular. I live on the coast of South Carolina USA, which sees very little cold weather even in winter. Not much need for a wearable blanket! I'm now knitting the Soirée Scarf with some of the Linen Quill yarn I'd bought for H+HTWs. Like the wrap, the scarf has two halves, each in a different color of Linen Quill. Smaller in scale, but with the same vibe.

I am an experienced quilter and I have to tell you: You are exactly right about putting the quilt together in 4 X 4 or 3 X 3 blocks instead of sewing in strips. YOu already figured out that strips compound any slight mis-measurement. I love your choice of fabrics. You have a great eye for color and pattern!

Selma me encanta verte y adoro tus podcast! ...

It’s funny I’m just now knitting the Colorica Cardigan my Rosemary Hill which I’m finding is it’s more complicated and she says “because of the way the sleeves are worked, you won’t have the extra fabric…” so I thought I’d try it because that’s one of the reasons I don’t usually knit them.

As a quilter and knitter, make the squares oversized then trim them down to the size you need after you've sewn it together. Solves most of the alignment issues. One famous quilter who uses that approach is Quilt in a Day with Eleanor Burns. She has a lot of quilting patterns as well.

My Lento was a complete fail too in the exact same way. I tried to take in the sleeve area and it didn’t work. It is sitting waiting to be frogged. I thought I would make multiple sweaters but that style was horrible on me. I don’t understand why everyone raved about it. I am making the EUN sweater and it is fulfilling that same desire in a much better way. I just lengthened a bit before dividing for the ribbing. The fit is so much better and the raglan detail so pretty. I will make more so consider making that with the yarn after frogging. Sorry that you were disappointed as well. Maybe other body types it works just fine but not mine! Good luck. Also frogging with mohair is definitely a two person job one for each yarn. 😊find a friend!

For older people who tend to have a hunched neck and rounded back. Drop shoulders envisage those unwanted feathers. The contiguous set-in sleeve is my favorite type currently. I also like Coco knits e method is also nice for getting a good fitting sweater.

Lots of interest and learning in this episode, thank you. I think the early drop shoulder jumpers especially in the Nordic tradition were knitted in the round as tubes to make it easier to do the colourwork, and then the armholes were steeked to add the sleeves. This is still common in these patterns and not for the faint hearted 🙂

Thanks for this convo starter. Like always the devil is on the details. The Stockholm sweater is a great design the Weekender Light is not. IMO. It is a bit heartbreaking that you have to knit the whole sweater to find out how good it looks. Like your Lento. I guess we are lucky we can save the yarn and use it on another project. BTW the Peacock tee is "amazing" I knitted one last year and my cousin wants one for her and I need another one for me. The fit is great and being made of linen-cotton I put mine in the washing machine 😻

The shoulder/sleeve discussion at the end was really interesting. I love knitting round yokes and raglan ... but: I always worry, because the shoulders usually have so much slope. Some people have very straight, broad shoulders, others have bottle shoulders that slope a lot, and all in between. Depending on this certain ways to cut fabric or knit are a better fit in general. Now knits are elastic and may sort of block around the shoulder shape, so it tends to work out anyway.

Great episode. If you're piecing the quilt by machine, keep in mind that the feed dogs pull the lower layer, so if you hold the strips to be connected with your thumb on the bottom and your fingers on the top, then roll your hand (so you're looking at your thumb), it will keep the two layers more even as they feed through the machine. This is true, even when sewing a pants leg, where you are sewing a long seam.

Congrats on finishing your first quilt top! Did you try ironing the seams of each strip in opposite directions? So strip one is ironed up and strip two is ironed facing south. This enables you to nest them together and the seams line up nicely, especially if you heavily pin the blocks that are a little off. Also there are tons of patterns where you don't have to line up seams and that hides a multitude of sins! Good luck on your quilting journey. Hope you continue!

Hi Selma, Love your podcasts, I have a few comments though. 1) that “orange” tee you are knitting is a good color with your fair hair as well as the “hot” pink. Those lighter colors seem to wash your coloring out. You are lovely by the way and remind me of my great neighbor. 2) I am learning a lot from you about swatching as a start of any project. Also, learning what looks good on my own body shape. 3) now to quilting and this may be long as I have been quilting for about 25 years now. You are talking about you blocks that are misaligned. Why not rip the seams where you think they aren’t quite right? When sewing two blocks together and you find that one is slightly larger, place that block on the bottom when feeding through the machine. Because the feed dogs are on the bottom, they will help to ease the block together. When you pin those blocks that are not exactly the same, try to ease that bigger block a little and be sure to put it on the bottom. 4) You are talking about making a 4-patch which will have quite a few more seams. Try another quilt like your 1st and practice once again. 5) Watch all of Jenny Doan’s KZread videos that you can. You can learn “sew”much from her and her family, you will be surprised. Look for Missouri Star Quilt Company videos. When you are ready to do your bing search for her Ultimate Binding video. 6) Use batting made for quilting. I like the Quilter’s Dream 80/20 for most every project.(especially when starting out) It is not expensive and I think you will find the results much better than using flannel fabric etc. Ok, so do not beat yourself up, your quilt is pretty and when you quilt it so of those misalignments will become almost invisible. If you can read and watch videos while knitting go for it! I find that because I am a quilter, I gravitate towards knitting as some of the same concepts are the same. Enjoy, and when you are a woman my age you will be prolific! I just won a contest in my home state of KY with a quilt top, which was not to be quilted. It will be auctioned off this Saturday to benefit a school supported by the DAR(Daughter of the American Revolution). AND, thank you for the $1000 donation you were able to make to abused women and children! You are amazing.

Matching socks as a wedding gift is such a lovely idea! Yay for quilts!! I quilt , too and it's so fun to have the memories of those fabrics and their past projects, or being new. on't worry about skewiness--you will quilt it and if you like the crinkliness once washed, it's all good and will be lovely. As Jenny from Missouri Star Quilt Co says: "I'm not going to die over it". 😂 (You could machine quilt using a big curvy/wavy , S-stitch and then it will not go right in the seam lines. but straddle)

Sorry about the redo of the neck area. Wish I lived nearer it would be fun to be able to knit with a skilled knitter. So many great ideas I this episode. Thank you.

I knit an Anker sweater, without short rows, and didn't like the fit. If you have much of a bust, it makes a barrel shape. Ripped the entire sweater out and am repurposing the yarn. Maybe short rows would help thattoo. Thanks for the suggestions.

Thank you for another lovely episode. I have not done any quilting, but your first one is inspiring to me and the colors would match my house so well ha ha. I am hoping to make the springline tee as well. I tend to have some issues with necklines, because the back of my neck is a little sloped like a little hump, probably from years of bending over reading books as a child. After learning German shortrows I add them to sweaters that are missing short rows, but sometimes they don’t fit right so I have no problem ripping things back and trying again. And I appreciate you do that. There’s no point in knitting the garment that you never wear. I have a few of those.

Interesting thoughts around drop shoulders. For me it so much depends on the sleeves when it comes to a drop shoulder. I think a lot of drop shoulder patterns (especially ones that are maybe 5-10 years old) have a oversized fit but tight sleeves, for me that's not a good look I think, but when it is a bit relaxed, and the sleeves have the same amount of ease as the body, I think it is a lovely style to wear. For example the Ingrid sweater by Petite knit has that nice and relaxed fit :)

Good to see you again -- and I hope you feel completely well soon. Congratulations on your first quilt! I've been quilting about 30 years; knitting for over 60 and enjoy it immensely. Four-patches and nine-patches are great options after a one-patch. And then there's the log cabin too. Don't fuss about your points matching -- that takes practice and sometimes even after years, they don't always match! Quilters are apt to say that won't be visible by a blind man on a fast horse at 100 metres, so don't sweat it! 😉 As for size, another way to enlarge it a bit is to add borders. You don't need one long length to do this; just as with your backing, you can piece the borders. With a multi-coloured top, I often use a plain (solid) border that picks up one of the colours in the top pieces. Whatever you decide to do about quilting, welcome to the community! Hugs from central Alberta...

About drop shoulder sweaters…it could be that if you choose a design with a deep (or somewhat deep) V neck, it will lessen the “mass” of fabric on our torso and thereby make the “bulk” of drop shoulder sleeves less … “bulky”. In other words, taking away something from our chest could make what’s happening at the shoulders/arms less noticeable. And the V neck might draw the eye to our sternum, away from the arms. Just a theory. You can be our guinea pig😉

About your Lento, which is beautiful 😍, you could rip the sleeve back and do raglan increase just on the body and stop the raglan increases on the sleeve just when you feel the sleeve has the right amount of stitches for you. Then you’ll have perfect sleeves and perfect body on your Lento. Easy peasy 🤗🌟✨🌟

Thanks for another great episode! The fabric of your Lento is gorgeous❤. I think I would consider ripping back in order to modify the raglan increases. Love, love, love the colors in your quilt top! I was a quilter before I was an avid knitter. Sometimes I miss quilting. If you decide to make more quilts, you might consider buying a cutting mat, quilting ruler, and rotary cutter to help make your squares the same size. You can also use it to square up your blocks (trim them to an exact size after sewing) which helps make your corners meet neatly as you piece the squares together. Good luck...have fun!

Hi Selma, a lovely podcast..again. I am a quilter and have a thought for you and you may already know this tip. Each row needs to be ironed in the opposite direction to nestle together. When they seem off a bit usually is the seam allowance isn’t the same and I have to rip it out and adjust it😊

  • @littlebigknits

As always, I enjoy seeing your videos pop up. On your quilt - your cutting may be ok but check your seam allowance. Variations from the 1/4” can multiply over just a few blocks and really make a difference. So maybe take a critical look at the back of your quilt to see if this may be a problem. Actually measure it in several places. If you don’t have a quarter inch foot, they are well worth the investment. Also try sewing three 2 1/2” strips together. Press. Your resulting block should measure 6 1/2”.
