I loved this episode. It spoke to me on so many levels, particularly about the blocked creativity. I just made a zipper pouch as a gift for a friend and that gave me the jumpstart to completely gut my ‘stacked to the rafters’ studio, i’m purging fabrics and they are going to be gifted or given to goodwill, and already I feel a load has been lifted from shoulders. I love the blazer. I’m knitting an Anna Tee to wear under my blazer for the upcoming Fall trip to NY wine country. Looking forward to your next podcast.

Hi Selma - thanks for another great episode! I wanted to say that your DRK Everyday sweater is so cute and flattering on you. I know there are a couple of things that didn’t turn out exactly the way that you wanted, but the moment I saw you in it I was struck by how perfect it looked on you and when you stood up and showed the entire sweater and how it was fitting I was even more in love with it. You may see the color and the jogs of the stripes when you look at it, but everyone else sees a perfect, cute, comfy, and very flattering sweater. I hope you wear it a lot and feel beautiful in it!

Thank you Selma for another lovely “visit”. I have been knitting for 60+ years, and the Ilha Sweater is one of my favourite makes. The pattern is really well written, it is an absolute joy to knit, and is my best fitting yoked sweater. I have made 2!!! I highly recommend it. You mentioned Kate - I miss her podcasts and I do hope she is well. Have a great September - my daughter and I have a tradition to go to Knit City Vancouver (we live there!) every year, and even though I have yarn beyond my life expectancy it is a lovely day out! 💞

My goodness, you've been busy! I love that embroidery style - simple and yet really nice detail. It's sort of a shame about the bleeding of color but I must say, it's still lovely. Agreed that the jogless stripe came out more visible than a regular one. Might be something to practice on pot holders or washing cloths. Regardless, lots of prettiness. A friend is making bags to match his handmade blankets and I thought of you while he was telling about it. I think I'll suggest that he look for fabric at flea markets and thrift stores. Hooray for healing and having good times. I'm going camping a week from today - it's only 3 days but the first time away from providing caregiving for my husband in 3 1/2 years, so I'm ready - and I'll get to visit an LYS up there in the pine covered mountain as well as doing some hiking.

Re jogless stripes-and this is from Brooklyn Tweed turn-a-square hat (free pattern). After knitting the first round, before knitting the first stitch of second round, lift the stitch directly under that stitch (ie the original first stitch) up on to your left needle and knit it together with the first stitch of the second round. Has always been satisfactory for me especially when I remember to do it! 😅 Love the re acquaintance with your sewing machine. Have done a number of patched bags with zippers, but enjoy a drawstring much better!🥰🧶👍🏻

I have those needle stoppers to. Use them everyday. Apart from being purposeful I just love how they look

I love Arne & Carlos's solution for a jogless stripe. "Don't worry about it", says Carlos. Your sashiko stitching for your denim bag is beautiful. Your second stitching idea as sketched should be very attractive, too. I wish I had saved my "Calvins" from the 1980s so that I could use the denim from them to make bags now. I'm currently knitting the Twig pattern by Leslie Friend. It's a trim poncho, not bulky like the ponchos from the 1970s. It's a simple, relaxing pattern, just what I need while getting to the end of a five-month convalescence after surgery following a fall on Easter Sunday. Fingers crossed for a return to cooler weather soon. What a scorcher this summer has been for much of North America. Thank you for always bringing such lovely and inspiring content, Selma.

@@littlebigknits Thank you, each day brings steady improvement. Over the years I've been able to recycle clothing fabrics into useful objects around the house, like decorative pillows. My father had quite a collection of beautiful Ben Silver neckties. After he passed away, my mother and I wanted to do something with them besides putting them away in a drawer. A friend of mine who was very creative with sewing kindly offered to make a decorative pillow out of those ties. The result was stunning and has been such a comfort over the years.

We have a beautiful Province hey Selma 😊💝 I lived in Alberta loved the mountains so much but I missed the water so loved when we drove to Spray Lake I could see water 😁😁

Love all the creativity going on in your realm, Selma...the blue and white DRK is beautiful, great color on you! I still haven't found the best technique either for jogless stripes and really had to finagle the weaving in of ends to make my DRK STRIPES! look satisfactory to me...Master Knitter's Roxanne Richardson and Suzanne Bryan have excellent videos too...I must practice this more lol! The SARA vest is one my needles next...Love you color choice!

Lovely knits. When i do stripes i use the tutorial from andrea mowrey. Knit one round with new colour, on second round take the first leg of the knit stitch below and lift up onto the left hand needle and knit the two stitches together. They will be two different colours. Works perfectly and also i change yarn under the arm at the side of sweater.

Try ACTechniques, Helical Knitting for jobless stripes, she does amazing tutorials. Another great episode, so much inspiration!! ❤

Love your videos. So happy your wrist is healing. I have knit the Sara Vest, it's a lovely quick knit, and so pretty. But be aware that you may have to move your BOR marker forward or back a few stitches (I don't remember exactly how many) before splitting for front and back if you want the lace pattern to be centered.

Lovely knits! I had the same problem with an alpaca linen recently. It is a commercial yarn, and when I soaked the project, I was astonished at the amount of colour in the water. So maybe it’s something to do with linen and dye. Have fun at the concert! Two of my sons will be there with their father - it is so hot here, make sure to have water with you! I love taking the train. The last time I went to Montreal, I took the train. And if I’m travelling to Ottawa by myself, I usually take the train. And several years ago, my husband and I took the train to Winnipeg and it was so much fun travelling across northern Ontario. I hope you have time to drop into The Knitting Loft! moi moi 🇨🇦🇫🇮

I don't do many stripes, but one suggestion is to do the color change in a less conspicuous place (e.g. at the raglan).

That pink top is SO CUTE. I’m sure you’ve gotten lots of resources, but my I thought I’d offer my fave jogless stripe technique. I learned it from Nimble Needles. When you do your second row of the stripe color, when you come to the join, you pick up a loop from the previous color and knit it with the stitch on your needle. Norman has a great video about it!

I actually did that in the first part of the sweater! No better unfortunately. Maybe it was the gauge or the linen?

I hear you on the jogless stripes. Stephen West showed how he did it in his recent mystery sock tutorial. It involved lifting up one leg of the stitch below on the second round. I tried that, but to me it still looked messy. Next time, you could maybe try making a faux seam on the sides of your sweater with a purl stitch and change colours there. I’ve heard that works pretty well. However, that wouldn’t solve the yoke area. 😬

Patty lyons jogless. You tube video I . Have liked this video. You do have to make sure you do this on the correct row, not every row. For single color rows spiral knitting is goo d especially hats and socks and finer yarns. Always so nice projects you have. Of course the higher contrast color makes boo boos show more…

I just swatched and calculated my stitch/row counts for my first West Village Skirt! I have a feeling Im going to make a lot of these as wardrobe staples. My first one is going to be made with Brooklyn Tweed Loft held double, also held with a strand of sequin sparkle from the Crafty Jackalope!

Hi Selma, Love your work as always. Have you heard of Wabi Sabi? Basically, Its the Japanese principle of beauty in imperfection, I think its such a freeing concept! Aprapos of that, I recently watched the Get Back documentary about the Beatles and can you believe that none of them could read or write music !!!! Paul McCartney said that years later he realised that no knowing the rules, if you will meant that he could explore without boundaries or the bridle of structure. I think that crosses over into all forms of art. I love learning about myself and others through creativity. That pink sweater youre wearing is just gorgeous!! everything about it is just so cute!! Thanks for all the inspiration you bring.

Hello Selma, Thank you for another lovely episode where you share a "tranche de vie" with us. I was finishing the second sleeve on my Salty Air Tee as I watched, and you mentionning yours made me smile. I too struggled with "jogless" stripes, and my "Touski" Ravello by Isabell Kraemer is a prime example of this. Now, it's not so bad...I discovered Hélène Magnusson's method and it seems to jell with me. Really liked the suggestions you made about future patterns, namely the Sara Vest (who doesn't love a vest?), the Lace & Fade Boxy (I have the perfect fade kit waiting for just this occasion!) and the Ilha (which is already in my favorites but will be promoted to my queue). The idea of replacing the bobbles on your Tulip tee with nibs is genius! I've often refrained from knitting a pattern because it had bobbles, but no more! You've reminded me that being not so very exact and thinking outside the box - or the pattern - is a GOOD thing. It's called creativity. And you have plenty of it...and it's catching. Being from Montréal myself - although I now live in Lava - tickles me every time you mention a visit to the Métropole. The blue suede blazer you showed is quite a find. You mentionned wearing it with your beige Stockholm....I double dog dare you to wear it with a white shirt, a grey skirt and your hot pink Stockholm ! I am convinced it would look great. When garbed all in classic pieces, just a bit of zazz often makes the whole outfit sing. I think it's also funny you mentionned the podcast by youngfolk knits which contains references to Nora Ephron since it's the first one I watched by this knitter and I loved it. I'm grateful you included your "glamping" weekend at the end. It looked so peaceful and the mushrooms were incredible. Happiness is knitting by the fire while your sweet potatoes are roasting. Your man is a brave one. The water looked rather coolish, but then if living in Québec or Ontario, that's what is expected from bathing in lakes. I think the British call it "bracing". Hope you have a great time knitting on the train to and from Toronto and that your concert is everything you expect. Travel by train is the best. It slows things down and lets you breathe and relax. Well, that's enough for now...I do seem to go on and on and on. I want to reiterate my thanks for taking the time and energy and making this content for us, your knitting posse. It's always a privilege to be invited into you home and be a witness to you "quotidien". I am so very in awe of all that talent and dedication. Oh Selma, this podcast really resonated with me because I feel sometimes I get 1 decent FO out of every 3 or 4 I actually knit lol I was doing the finishing on a cardigan I have been working on for 6 months for my mother. She specially selected the yarn and I came up with the pattern myself (just an “easy” kimono style). Anyway, the whole thing was in a lacy repeat and didn’t realize that I didn’t have the lace repeats on the front panels EXACTLY symmetrical and so the grafting at the shoulders is off about 10 stitches and I am so disappointed! But…oh well. I always learn something with every disaster and so it goes. 😂 PS the Sara vest is a lovely pattern but I didn’t like the stepped shoulder seam. That’s when I finally learned how to Kitchener! As a final not, I am intrigued by your stitched bag!!! I have been wanting to do something similar but not sure I have the patience but your bag will be so so cute & is very inspirational!

Omg that would be so disappointing!! I hope the cardigan gets worn or did you rip out?? I have t agree re the Sara vest. The lace didn’t align when I separated for the front and back so I had to fiddle a bunch to make it work. I will probably do short rows at the top as I agree re the stepped bond off.

You might enjoy Crazy Quilting. There are several uTube videos. You could do machine piecing and add decorative hand sewing on it. Thanks I you always inspire me! There are just not enough hours in the day!

Have you seen the Everyday Attitude top by Susanne Sommer? It’s a stripey top that eliminates the problem of the jog because she has you use slip stitches at each sideseam so you end up with a vertical stripe down each side seam. It’s a really elegant design feature and might give you a solution to jogs next time you stripe 🤓

Hi Selma, always enjoy your makes….I wrote a long comment and don’t know where it is now😀. I recently knitted Rituals by Joji Locatelli and found that doing nothing actually looks the best in narrow stripes. I’ve tried ALL the methods believe me! When picking up the previous colour I just pay attention to neaten up the last stitch in the previous stripe knitted with that colour as well as tighten up the 1st 2 stitches in the new colour. Also try not to tighten up the float too much… For wider stripes adding a yo before the 1st st and dropping it in the next round also helps for the float.

It's probably already been mentioned by someone else, but if you're not having much luck with slipping the first stitch of the second row of a new color, try Norman's (Nimble Needles) method of picking up the right leg of the stitch below the first stitch of the second row, putting it up onto the left needle, then knitting that together with the first stitch. I've been thinking of making this change myself after some disappointment with the slipping method.

I actually did that for the first few and then rd the method I mentioned… it may be the yarn of the gauge? Or me!

Fitting sweaters - the gospel according to Kate Atherley: to lose volume in the high bust/upper chest of your sweaters, you should choose the size according to your high bust measurement (measured around your underarms and up around your high bust) plus the amount of ease recommended in the pattern. That reduces the volume at the upper chest, but the intended ease should be sufficient to fit your full bust. Unless your full bust measurement is massively bigger than your high bust measurement, in which case you add short rows to make the equivalent of a dart to add fullness to the fabric. Also, in Isabell Kraemer's Ravello sweater, she adds a faux 'seam' of a single purl stitch down the side of the sweater and the colour change is done there. The cinching in of the stitch hides the jog. It doesn't overcome the problem of the yoke, unless you want to make a faux raglan, but it limits the obvious change going all the way down your back!

I have knitted mine ilha sweater and it is a beautiful pattern. I bought mine immediately after watching knitter quiche podcast. You will enjoy the pattern.

I also watched the Knitters Kniche episode with her finished Ilha, and her's is so lovely it makes me want to knit one too. The patterns and colour palette that Bobbi knits really speak to me

I feel the same way about creativity, it so much more fun to not be restricted by exactness and just be free to see where it goes.

Always nice catching up with your makes! I also recently started to familiarise myself with my new sewing machine by making bags and enjoy it a lot. It looks like you are not using any batting. I don’t and actually prefer the softer drawstring bag,especially when having to pack it in a suitcase when travelling. Re “jogless” stripes: I recently knitted Rituals by Joji Locatelli and found the doing nothing in the 2 row stripes looks the best! Most of the time on thinner stripes, I prefer doing nothing and just pay attention to neaten up the last stitch knitted with the colour I’m picking up. To make sure the the float is long enough when carrying up yarns for a lot of rounds, a yarnover in the new colour at the beginning of the round (and dropping it in the next round) helps to prevent the floats of being too tight.

Your "doodles" are very intriguing. I especially liked the combination of arches and circles. It is so abstract and really fun. Anyone that is able to knit "exactly" may be missing the point, in my opinion. Even using the same pattern the projects all have their own personalities, reflecting the knitters who made them. I love that about knitting.

Lovely content as always Selma, worth waiting for! I can relate to your disliking “perfection” in creativity. When I was a quilter I soon felt constrained by the geometric patchwork patterns and soon moved on to my own more relaxed style - eventually ending up working mainly with appliqué to my own designs. I’m like this with lace in knitting - I did the Love one and hated HATED the lace yoke section but persevered with two froggings and many mistakes. You can’t see them and I’m not owning up! 🥰 Simple yarn over and eyelet lace patterns are as much as I can cope with. Paradoxically I love Fairisle and have a cardigan waiting to be knit - including STEEKING eeeek! for winter. But it’s the colour play which excites me, not the precision. So we shall see! So glad you’re enjoying Chief Inspector Gamache! Louise Penny’s final book dropped through our letter box a couple of weeks ago and my husband has read it and really enjoyed it but I can’t pick it up. I’m putting it off because I know this is the final one and I shall be bereft when I finish it! Have a lovely trip!

There was a long wait for this final book to be published and as I say, I’m putting off starting it because when it’s gone, it’s gone! Such a shame ,but I guess, quite apart from the tragedy of her death, Gamache and the other characters are ageing as the books continue and they can’t go on for ever! 😥

Enjoy your train ride to the Sting concert. I just love knitting on the train, it's such a pleasure watching the world go by with some knitting in my lap.

Oh how I wish I could have bumped into you at Twist. I took the basket making class this year on Friday. Yes this was a lovely time. I really enjoyed all of your beautiful projects and life stories. The heat has here in Québec also so naturally I chose today to wash windows. Whew. Not wise. 😅

Soothing to watch on a hot Sunday afternoon after giving my outdoor flowers a long, cool drink. I love the blue of your striped sweater. I've heard of people soaking and drying yarn in the hank before making a cake to take care of color coming off. Have I ever done that? No. 🙃

I bought the Contrasts book as a PDF thanks to you because I also loved the Peachy Beach sweater. I also had a moment of OMG then reread and put markers in and am loving it. Going to Finland and Norway end of September and might have one sleeve done. Do you think it would look funny wearing it like that😂. It’s a beautiful pattern. You cost me way tooo much money and I love it. We have the same tastes. Favorite podcaster ever.
