EPISODE 63 - SPRAYING DOWN SOME METALLIC PEARL COLOUR ON THE HOLDEN WB UTE.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This episode is another big step forward and represents 4 years of work to not only get the utes panels to the stage that it can finally painted but also having learnt the knowledge to apply the paint to a professional level. It required a lot of research, good equipment and preparation but i think i achieved the goal of what i set out to do and that was a beautiful finish for my first panels. Seeyou inside

    Good job mate, well done. As far as adding reducer to your clear I wouldn't, you could set yourself up for a load of trouble with runs and sagging, get yourself a cheater valve ( a regulator) and put it on your gun and spray your clear at 2 bar (28 psi) and that might calm the orange peel with a finer atomisation. Its also in the way you lay it down but HS clear is way to go. MS clear would be easier to use on your first go but it is thinner. 2 coats of HS is plenty even if your going to wet sand and buff at the end. Flow coat is maybe overkill but it's your build. If you reduce your HS clear your basically turning it into a MS clear because your reducing out the solids in it. Try putting your extraction fan on the floor and pull all the overspray down not up!! Definitely get yourself a regulator on your gun so you know what pressure your spaying at the gun. You can set it at your compressor but it drops as it travels through the hose. The metallics in your basecoat look great man even on my phone. A big step mate and you nailed it. Sorry if I'm pointing out the negative things but I'm just offering advice, things I've learned over the years and years of painting. Keep moving forward mate the end is getting closer. 👍🏼 😁

    Thanks mate, I am planning on spraying the body shell this weekend so i will probably sand the tailgate and do that first as a test for the new settings and then i will be ready to go on the body. I do have a regulator for the gun i just didn't have a connector last round. I have decided i will spray the shell as one unit so i don't have to back tape inner door jams etc and i will that will reduce overspray in the booth and give me more control and visibilty. I have bought another fan system to reduce the overspray and will see how it goes. I think although considered a riskier method by spraying guards and doors seperately it allows me to really concentrate on doing a great job on smaller areas, gives me more visibility from overspray and better lighting conditions and eliminates all the taping. I will spray both guards and doors in vertical positions maintaining a similar angled drop coat pattern so to replicate the same metallic as the body. I think it should work. The gun pressure was around 3.5 bar so way too high and i think thats what was creating the orange peel for sure, just too much power coming out, hence why i had to hold it way back. Thanks for the feedback, as i said the other day, i didn't spray those panels, 10 people subscribed to this channel painted those panels, you being one of them. Cheers mate

    As the ol saying goes Barnsey - “Your only as good as your tools “ or “ quality tools quality job “ and you’ve proven it here . Good work man - a tip to evenly flatten the fuckhead moth track is to tape off the immediate area and use a painters razor and gently scrape the ripple off down to flat again, this technique will also let you know if it’s too deep but once it’s flat enough in the clear then spot sand with high grit paper slowly radiatin out to a patch about 3 times the size of the original blemish. Then “pish” in a coupla coats of clear to the area to bring the height up again then block / cut back the entire panel back to flat and coat whole panel again. Also invest in some tack cloths and use them just before applying any coat of paint as this positively removes any debris that is statically attracted to the surface of the panel. Choice colour !

    Thanks mate! Yeah the moth fucked it good and proper, i tried to sand back the clear but it was too deep and before i could iron out the little footprints the stain started to grow as i rubbed which i guess meant i had reached the dreaded metallic layer. So i am just going to assume the only method of repair now is a complete respray of metallic and clear, sand back with 800 first down to metallic level and go again? Absolute Pain in the arse. However that Walcom gun is awesome, it carried me the whole way! cheers mate

    G'day Barnsey - great stuff mate, a real milestone to see some colour going down - you must be stoked. Some thoughts for you - bearing in mind that I, like you, am not a professional, merely a well meaning amateur but, here a few things I have picked up over the years playing with paint. I notice you didn't have a regulator on the gun - your MDS will give you all the specs you need: mix ratio, flash time, tip size and pressure at the gun - if you get the set up right and add some reducer you will find that the paint/clear will atomize really nicely and you'll get a great finish - your quality gun will be so much better with the proper settings. You are always going to have orange peel, it's just the nature of the beast - look at the finish on brand new cars and you'll see they have peel - real pro painters are able to mimic the orange peel finish of the different manufacturers. Trash in your paint - in your case a moth (been there), in my case it was always black dog hair and always at the most critical moment. The truth is that even in a professional booth you'll get trash in the paint. Fixing the moth damage will depend on how much clear was down before it landed and how deep you dug to get it out. Prepare yourself for having to repaint the entire tailgate - maybe you'll get lucky. I have loads of different small hard rubber blocks for gnats and dust - I think they are called toleblocks by Eagle - I got them on Amazon - they are small to minimize the area you sand. If you had enough clear you could hit it with 600 - 800 on a DA, but only you will know. As you are learning as you go I would suggest that you put down more than 2 coats of clear - I usually do three, one tack and two full wet coats, then I go with 800 dry on the DA before laying down another couple of coats. In other words, give yourself as much room for error as possible - and be really careful with edges - hopefully you won't have any burn through but, prepare yourself just in case. Metallic is hard, but not impossible to paint as you have already proved - a good gun set up and technique will get you where you need to be. I have heard that it's best to paint the panel it the same orientation that it will be when on the car; so paint the hood flat but, have doors and tailgate on a stand matching how they hang on the vehicle. Others may have a different opinion but, it makes sense to me. Anyway, awesome progress mate - looking forward to the next episode. BTW - did you say AU$123 per liter for the raptor liner? Holy shit - its $149US for a 4 liter kit including the gun.

  • @BarnesysBuilds

    @BarnesysBuilds

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Alan, Definitely stoked with the outcome, despite the moth shitting on my parade. Unfortunately it will need a total respray as i tried to sand it back but unfortunatelt the moth legs ended up going into the metallic and the patch just kept getting bigger the more i sanded. So it's a full sand back and redo which is so annoying. I do have a wall regulator which was around 2.5 bar i think and also have a regulator for the gun but i didn't have a connection to mount it so i just used the wall regulator. It also has a large water trap on it as well. I defintely need to tweak the settings on the gun, i rushed it and was keen to get started but can defintely get better results. And yes $123 per liter for Raptor liner, or $325 for the 4 litre pack. We get stitched up down here on price for most things unfortunately. Thanks Alan

    @@BarnesysBuilds No doubt you're pleased mate it's the icing on the cake getting to put down some colour after all the hard work. I knew that tailgate was going to need a re-shoot - it's mad just how hard it is to sand even the tiniest gnat out of clear. Just know this isn't the last time you'll have to deal with this. Even with your booth (which I would kill for) you're going to have to sand trash out of the finish - that's why I would advise you not to skimp on your clear coat as you're going to need as much material as possible for when it's time to cut and buff. You must get a regulator at the the gun - it will make a world of difference. If you're at 2.5 bar (36 psi approx) at the wall just think how many meters of hose there are between there and the gun - there's bound to be some drop off. If you regulate right at the gun you can set everything up to the paint manufacturer's specs, then you can tweak it from there - you will be amazed at the off the gun finish. I have an Anest Iwata clone for colour and an Anest Iwata W-400 Bellaria for clear - the results are so much better than the cheap old guns I used to use. Funny you say about Aussie prices - I got Yella Terra roller rockers direct from the manufacturer in Aus and still saved a couple of hundred over the same item locally even with shipping. Anyway mate - just use the experience with the tailgate as an opportunity to practice some more - you're gonna need it when it comes to spraying the bed sides! Waiting eagerly for the next installment.

    Great work mate,😁 you know it's coming 😁....gun is to far away that's what's giving you so much peal, you won't get runs when applying the colour unless you put it on way to heavy, and after that 1st coat of clear, if you don't get a run or two you are either to far away or not blasting enough on IMO(runs easy fixed in the clear). That's why a test panel to practice on is a good idea, to find your limits. At the end of the day the ground work is down, its going to look shit hot, and after 10 yrs or so of enjoyment, and its chipped and scratched you'll probably rub it down and do a show quality spray job. Seriously man for your 1st time doing all this type of work, you are doing an excellent job, 👍 P.S even the best are welding and fixing things right up to the last minute.

They are mounted in with a moveable plate like the door hinge which sounds good but it's way crooked and have to open the skin to move it. I put a large bolt in and hit it across with hammer as Farr as I could but still not lining up too well with the hole in skin. Best I could do was grind out the hole so it doesn't foul. If I hit it any further it would have jumped off the tab. I suspect it will fit but might pull to one side as it closes.
