Episode 10 - How To Become A Professional Racing Driver. Dream big but start small.

This is my top tip for how to become a professional racing driver.
0:00 Intro
2:27 Today’s question
4:45 Dream big, start small
8:37 Look at Mazda MX5 racing
13:26 How I started racing
Hello this is Enzo Mucci and this episode was inspired by Max's following question:
“I have been trying to become a full time race driver for 3 years now and still I haven’t’ managed to do it. What would be your top tip for me?”
Well I want to show many of the drivers out there the best way to become a race driver when you do not have the money or sponsorship to race in the top levels straight away.
Let me know your thoughts and keep sending me your questions.

I can’t lie, being a 16 year old who was told that he was talented enough his entire life, who ran out of money aged 12, and who 4 years later is thinking about how I could still get onto that ladder, this video might be the best and most relatable I’ve ever watched. Thank you.

@@gunnarray2342 Not a good idea to expect having the skillset for F1, you'll easily disappoint yourself. It's a big world out there and just as he says in the video: start small and eat dirt for a few years lol Edit: Also it's not necessary to go to Europe. There are thousands of racing series all over the world to start of with. Maybe on a certain level you could start looking for a few international championships in Europe like F3 or whatever but for starters where ever you are there's bound to be some racing going on to start of with

1 year ago at a friend's birthday party (at some e-karts) i got in touch with the sport and started dreaming about racing, now i'm working my rally driving career; the other day (1 year later - now i'm 36) i competed on my first amateur race - available at my channel-, and in the meantime, i've been learning, studying and training... That is how i actually got to know your channel. You are a huge inspiration. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Enzo!

Awesome video Enzo, such great advice. This is all spot on. I wish KZread was around when I started! I saved £2.50 an hour to buy a kart at 15 and ended up in Aston Martin GT with no help at all from my parents the whole way through. I used to cycle 15 miles to the tracks carrying my kart engine. I can tell you all that this is video is how to do it.

Awesome information, Enzo. I've just sent off my first proposal using the advice and material provided in your Get The Drive program so I'm very thankful that I'm involved with it. The company I sent it to has already expressed interest so I'll be sure to let you know how it goes! Although I have some karting experience and have done some full-size car racing in the past, I'm also wanting to start small and get more miles under my belt. A beginning goal for me is the Skip Barber Racing Series here in the U.S. Their school is second to none and upon completion, you become eligible to race in their championship. They offer prizes, scholarships, and various rewards in this series and it has served as a successful stepping stone for many professional drivers. To run the series for the entire year costs $35k in the Formula car and $30k if you want to run the MX-5. They provide the car, service and even the gear if you don't have it. All the driver has to do is show up. It really doesn't get much better than that when you're just starting out here in the States. I've also made a list of several local companies that I plan to reach out to and have made a proposal which offers various sponsorship options from product to tens of thousands of dollars. Even though I haven't gone anywhere yet with this, I'm very thankful to have come across your work, Enzo. It feels good knowing that I'm at least working towards something instead of hoping it'll happen one day. I'll probably never stop saying thank you. If you ever make it down to Dallas, TX, give me a shout!

Just shared to my Virtual2Reality.tv page on Facebook. I hope you don't mind. This does get into a bit the traditional way of getting into motorsports. We've gone Virtual however. I'll be using the iRacing.com platform to find talented drivers and take the winners of our events and place them in racing schools for testing and evaluation. Watching your video though I was able to take a lot away from it for what we're doing. Your Dream Big and Start Small really rings a bell. I've written it down and will be following that as we're the ones raising the funding on behalf of our drivers. Thanks for the video, very informative. JH

Hi Enzo, great advice, you gave me a lot of extra motivation! Budget has always been a tough issue for me, as as was typically limited to Part-time work. I finally have an opportunity to make Full-time money. Anyway, I've been keeping busy by doing trackdays with my NA Miata and occasionally going to indoor electric karting. I've done 1 time trial with a local trackday club so far, which was a 2-day event (Trackday Sat, TT Sun). I plan to keep doing the time trails, at least until I can work out how to maybe transition in to SCCA club racing or something along those lines. I also sometimes consider getting in to hillclimbs, mainly because I am a local of New Hampshire and we have the Mt.Washington Hillclimb (think of it like a mini-Pikes Peak) every 3 years. A longer-term goal I have is to move to Germany and race in the VLN championship, no matter the class. I've heard it's a bit more direct since there are "rent-&-race" type deals that some teams/companies offer, so you can focus more on just showing up and driving. I've also heard that racing in Germany compared to America is cheaper/slightly easier to get in to. Anyway, I still am looking for details on how to work my way up the ladder in the VLN championship. Alternatively, If I felt like staying in America, I'd like to work towards either the Pirelli World Challenge or IMSA. What steps can I take from where I am now to try to make my way in to those ladders?

as a club racing driver of 25 years, the key thing you need even before embarking on a low level championship is practice, you need to be in a car all the time. Particularly if you have not raced anything before. My advise would be, go to a race school, meet some people, see if you like it. Buy a track car ( doesn't have to be fast but should be reliable) and do trackdays aiming for 200 track miles a day x10 days, then after at least one year you might then be ready to do the low level championship and win. Otherwise you'll spend all the money you have and be even further away from the dream as you've essentially proven you're not a winner because you won't have had the experience.

the ONLY tip to becoming a "professional" race driver is (drum roll)........ ******MONEY***** that's all you will EVER need. you don't even have to be talented. you can't start a racing series with great drivers. you start a racing series with below average drivers with RICH parents. then an above average driver comes along and then he becomes a STAR!! the above average driver rules like a king. then out of the blue, an undeniably, very talented, SUPERSTAR comes along and slips through the cracks somehow and catches a FINANCIAL break. he of course out drives EVERYONE, and he becomes a GOD! all others are now being judged and compared to HIM...

I remember when i was 17 or 18, living in brooklyn in a poor/middle-class family I was told I had to be in a wealthy family to be a professional racer... sadly i let that kill my dream while I was young and served time in the army infantry instead... I'm a software engineer now at 35 and I still have my heart calling me to race... I play sims all the time, games, and even go-kart now... I am very curious if I can maybe somehow find out if I am rare talent for the profession of racing. Can I still make that dream happen at this age...?

How did you get a bank loan? Would banks give you a loan to go to a Racing School? Even for 1, 2, or even 3 day? In the US, Allen Berg has a Racing School but it’s expensive, $6.5k for 3 days. I’m also 24, so being able to get a start will be hard, but I’m also curious to see how far I can go.

I just applied for it for a car purchase. I would not recommend getting a bank loan because you will be in the hole before you even start, I did the bank loan twice but the second time I regretted it because I could only manage to do half a season of racing, but had to keep paying that loan off for 5 years after, that was painful.

  • @EnzoMucci

Hi. Yes it is totally ok to start with rental karting. Getting outside sponsorship isn’t normally possible because there is no commercial value in it for them, so sponsorship from family members or just hustling in life to earn that $1,000 per month is normally what drivers do. Flipping things on Facebook Marketplace, working a night job and getting money in the old fashioned way is what most drivers will do for these championships. All the best KS
