Rookie to Pro | EP 2: "Racing Sim Basics"

Ойын-сауық

In one year, Alec is going to guide Joe on a journey from no experience to his professional racing license. Yes, to drive a full-size racecar... around a real track... In a real race... with other drivers.
Joe is a creator and athlete with no racing experience and Alec is a professional racing driver and coach. Their goal is to get Joe certified to race professionally in 1 year.
Taking Joe on a journey from Rookie to Pro.
Welcome to Episode 2: "Racing Sim Basics". In this episode, Alec introduces Joe to his racing simulator to find out how Joe’s sim performance stacks up to a professional racing driver. Alec chooses to start Joe in a Mazda MX5 at Lime Rock park in iRacing due to their ease for learning. In his first session, Alec shows Joe the 6 steps of learning to drive in a racing simulator. This is what we consider STEP 2 on the journey from no racing experience to your professional racing license. We’re not going to get fast in cars by staying in Karts. This gives Joe some practice in cars before we can get him in one.

Some other helpful tips:
Go for smooth. Not fast - the second you decide you want to go fast is when you end up being sloppy and actually going slower. Once you go for smooth, you’ll be surprised by watching your overall lap times improve.
If you have track left on the outside of your exit, it doesn't necessarily mean you should've carried more speed into the corner. It likely means you could have throttled more aggressively.
Some other things we hit on: the price of a racing simulator, trail braking, pitfalls of racing drivers in the simulator.

I was wondering if a different teaching approach might help. Alec is letting Joe go in blind, that helps Alec assess what Joe needs to work on, but maybe flip the order and have Alec talk through a pace lap demonstrating the ideal racing line, pointing out the braking zones, what gears and when to shift, and how to exit or setup of a complex of turns. Then Joe can go try to replicate it. Eventually Joe will understand how to find the ideal line and braking points on his own but I think this could speed up his learning curve and potentially reduce his embarrassment/frustration. Just a thought, you guys are doing great content here!

I think the hardest thing about going from a go kart to a sim is there's no sensation of movement, no G forces on you. So you have to rely upon your other senses like your eyes and ears, but maybe most importantly the force feedback through the wheel. You also need to understand the tire grip, what causes understeer and oversteer, and weight transfer like Alec pointed out. I would also say VR can help with the depth perception issue many people struggle with understanding where they are spatially on the track.

That’s why I love karting and don’t really enjoy sim racing. My sim rig is as cheap as it gets so I don’t get much in terms of feel. I don’t really care to spend more on it too much
