Being in the sim racing community around those early days sounds like it must have been so cool. Wish I was a part of it instead of being busy with being like 2 years old

2 year old? bruh you were already supposed to invest and buy a house, what a waste of time simracing as 2-year old, when you should have already made your first million by then. (for all mental athletes, i'm obviously joking).

I still cant get over what we play right now is just a very fancy NR2003.
“Drivers before then”…I built my own wheel controller in 1995 with a kid’s toy and a radio shack potentiometer. I wanted to see if having a wheel helped before I bought a “state of the art” wheel with bungee cords inside it for feedback. There was some F1 game out, but I spent most of my time in Sports Car GT
I love these sim racing stories. people always say you're just behind a makeshift steering wheel in front of a computer, but the racing and the emotions are absolutely real!

Right! But, the people who say that don't understand that even professional race teams, use Sim racing in training drives. F1, Nascar and I m sure many more!
I love seeing that old Steel Horse Racing Screen Print Dept truck with Bart Simpson on the back! I painted that truck! 🤣Bob and I were teammates for so many years, and I was always in awe of the things he could do behind the wheel. He talks a lot about race craft, and I regard Bob as the GOAT in that department. Great video!
As someone that still plays in NR2003 leagues, I love learning about DMP & the guys that started there. Great video in general
These are the most entertaining videos about a sim. This channel made me start playing and I just got my 5th win in formula and now in d class, I’ve been playing for 2 weeks

I remember reading an article about Kevin King in NASCAR Illustrated in 2006...they showed Dale Jr's car he ran in an NR2003 league which was a white number 3 Mom N' Pop's Chevy based on one of his lats models.
One year a guy named Brian started releasing some modded tracks where the grip up top was a lot more, DaleJr liked that so the DMP server would run them a lot. So the modded dega was called TalladegaBR. B for Brian. Anyway this somehow got to Mike Joy but he didn’t understand it completely, and he brought it up in an interview with Truex I think and asked him about ‘the video game you’ve been training on, TalladegaVR’, and that’s the story of the biggest nr2003 cringe of all time.

From a KZread channel, to a full on documentary…. Awesome job! The interviews, the research, the b-roll footage…it’s hard not to be entertained with everything you’re putting out. Now you’re releasing movies lol…..Amazing work!
As someone who has always enjoyed racing video games, but knows little about the competitive sim-racing scene, this vid was a really cool glimpse into that world. Bob seems like a likable guy...... glad he saw some success.
It's important you're preserving and highlighting stories like this that may otherwise be lost to time! Love it and thanks for all the track guides and laughs over the years. Huge fan!
The team I am on competed against bob, and I promise you he was highly respected and watched every week by our team. We were just talking about him 5-6hrs ago today lol

Pretty cool, met Bob back when we were racing at OnlineRacing back in the day. I painted him up a car when NR2003 came out, a Red and White CompUSA Monte Carlo. Glad to see one of the group do well in sim racing!
Its super cool to see the guys I used to run with in NR2003 get up to the Coke Series. Never ran with Bob, but I ran in Derek Justis's league with both him and Isaac Gann for a while. Derek was chill always a super helpful dude when I was just starting out, even started a series for rookies so guys like me can get more experience. Don't remember Isaac too well, he was just starting with the league when i ended up stepping away.

Love these videos bro, there are so many interesting stories that I would never hear about if it wasn’t for you
Great video as always! Small request, could you or anyone in the know do a deep dive on why Atlanta still to this day has never had functioning lights for night racing? It’s a very perplexing unsolved mystery that the devs never address.
Man, incredible work. This feels like a good sports doc. Super interesting. I've only ever done the road racing side of iRacing but I respect oval racing more and more as I learn about from the outside. It really is a special kind of racing in how strategy applies to it. The nuance is insane and executing a plan is so difficult to do. Only criticism I'd have is that you mentioned that Bryan was gonna win before finishing the story of the race. I didn't know he had won and I'm sure a lot of future viewers of this video will be in the same situation. Just lifted the tension some, is all. Looking forward to more stories like this! If I could request any, it'd be a deep dive into Greger Huttu.
@DJYeeJay
Күн бұрын
Great point about knowing if he’s gonna win. I mulled that over quite a bit and I think it came down to the idea of “the how is more interesting than the what” and some interview snippets mentioned the win that also had things I wanted to include And I’ve tried reaching out to Greger but he’s not easy to get a hold of 🤣
@kojacked
Күн бұрын
@@DJYeeJay totally fair. I didn't realize about the earlier snippets somehow. The lead up to the win is definitely the most interesting part as you say. Greger is interesting for sure. Maybe it could also work if you got it going by interviewing Huis and some other OG Redline guys first to get the ball rolling. Then they could kinda help get to him. Anyway, if he's too difficult to get a hold of, I'll watch anything you put out with this sort of quality. Thanks!

I wish you described more terms like what "clutching" is and how it enables more "tape", and what "tape" is in this context. 15:51 For anybody else who doesn't know: Tape is used to cover up the grille on the car to improve aerodynamics at the expense of reducing the radiators effectiveness and risking overheating. "Clutching" is putting in the clutch and coasting to save fuel and reduce engine load which reduces heat produced and enables more tape to be used.
@teebob21
Күн бұрын
The clutch is the pedal in a manual transmission car that isn't the brake or the accelerator. Pressing the clutch disconnects the motor from the transmission, effectively putting the car in neutral. Tape is tape, like duct tape or gaffer's tape. They put it on the radiator.
@pchris
Күн бұрын
@@teebob21 that doesn't really clear much up. :P I'm very aware of what a clutch is. I own 2 after all. That doesn't help me understand what "clutching" is in this context thought. With enough googling I figured out what the tape was about. I gather they put it on the grille - not the radiator - to reduce drag at the expensive of head dissipation. Not sure how "clutching" enabled them to do that though.
@teebob21
Күн бұрын
@@pchris How much fuel do you burn when you are coasting with the clutch engaged?
@pchris
Күн бұрын
@@teebob21 is that what that's supposed to mean? How does that enable someone to use more tape?
@teebob21
Күн бұрын
@@pchris More coasting is less fuel burned. Less fuel burned means lower engine heating. Lower engine heating means you can get by with less air flowing through the radiator and still not blow up the engine. That's where the extra tape can be used. Too much tape will mean you burn up your engine.

I had no idea nascar drivers were doing sim racing in the mid 2000s wtf
What is clutching?
@Mr_Bedlam215
3 күн бұрын
Holding the clutch in at speed disconnects the driveshaft from the transmission, allowing the engine to go back down to idle RPMs... less RPMs mean less fuel burning off, so you can see how it was used to help Bob's fuel strategy. *edited for spelling.
Has anyone here grow up playing NASCAR Legends from Papyrus also? Think it came out slightly after I think I remember the graphics being better then NR2003
@jwm2588
10 күн бұрын
Legends came out in 1999 after Nascar Racing 2. All the Papyrus racing games were fun.
I think the younger folk in the comments should know that today is a good era, just because those early 2000s PCs cost like $4000, in 2000 money, and the monitors were just as bad. Now? I'd say $800 worth of PC will get you on track and winning, then you can spend the rest on monitors and wheels and stuff. Your car looks like a car, not like a crumpled Doritos bag with wheels. It is a good day to be a sim racer.

Kyle Larson's "incident" could have been referred to more explicitly without sacrificing the message of this video. He used a racial slur on a live stream, and there was good reason for his team to fold. As a Kyle Larson fan, you have even more reason to hold him accountable.
