I'm a flow artist. It's not super popular, but it's the act of manipulating an object in a fluid manner. My preferred props are poi, which are weighted objects on the ends of chords. You can apply martial theory, dance basics, and even some fancy math and physics principles to get better.

Gardening. I have a hoe, cages for my tomatoes, and a shovel. That's about all I need to grow vegetables. To build flower beds I need more. But most of them are created using rocks.

Former concert pianist here. People are amazed when they find out ive only owned a 300 euro Yamaha stage piano for the past 12 years, since selling my expensive acoustic Yamaha. I was stressed and depressed when I had yhe the big fancy piano at home...a pain to move house, really loud so neighbors were always irritated. I practiced less and less and eventually quit piano as a job. Then, when i replaced it with my cheap electric Yamaha (still almost the same number of keys, just a lighter touch)....i rediscovered my love of learning new classical music...im now a really good pianist and PhD in music, BECAUSE i didnt upgrade my piano. Only a bad carpenter blames their tools. Ultimately, an expensive cumbersome instrument doesnt do the learning for you!

Sorry but if you are indeed a real concert pianist performing solo recitals and concerti you need a proper grand piano to practice on.. 🤦🏻‍♀️ my friend recently downgraded to an upright for moves and I do understand it is tough when renting. However, piano isn’t a “hobby” if you’re a performer. I’m lucky I’m a flautist, very transportable 😅

@@alexandrabcastle yes but as I said being a full time pianist made me miserable. Having the expensive and heavy/loud piano was partly to blame; I was able to play recitals and concerts nationally and internationally but I was anxious, nervous and generally depressed. I felt the weight of my expensive instrument; I couldn't find proper flats/apartments to rent, the noise from my practising p*ssed off neighbours. When I finally sold the piano, and used the money to fund grad school to study music theory, I genuinely felt free of the burden of my "passion". Now, I play concerts but they're mainly in a volunteer/ community capacity i.e. in nursing homes, or with the local amateur orchestra. My playing has actually improved, because when I do use a proper acoustic grand piano (usually twice a week at a local auditorium) I do focussed practise, not distracted by what's going on in my house or life. I'm also not a slave to the instrument. It's definitely improved my technical abilities.

I totally understand and have had the exact same experience! As a renter, and piano teacher for many decades… I have owned big expensive grand piano’s and big uprights thinking I couldn’t be the professional musician I wanted to be without them … BUT I was wrong.. sold them a few years ago when we moved house yet again, which allowed me to rent a much smaller , cheaper, but nicer home, and do a huge declutter. There was only enough room for a compact type of digital piano, so I bought a top of the range Yamaha digital grand and it’s been life changing… The luxury of being able to use headphones at any time of day or night has significantly increased my enjoyment and practice time and skill level! Plus the majority of my students are using digital pianos at home too these days… so it’s been a win, win in my opinion!

@@TamaraJoy7 awwwww this is sooo inspiring to read, thank you so much for taking the time to share. Also, the snobbery against digital pianos is rampant in classical circles here in Ireland, but if Bach or Mozart had the amazing top of the range digital pianos that we do, they'd have totally loved to play them and perform concerts on them. Out of tune pianos were hell then and are even now. To say nothing of the expense and immobility! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🎹🔥

My husband and I were Art majors in college, and we both have careers that include art, but we truly feel more creative when we own less materials. We have seen many artists fall into the trap of hoarding art supplies.

YES. I also went to school for art and I ended up switching to digital art!!!! I have NOT looked back. I also found myself struggling to be creative when I had all the possible materials, and it gave me anxiety to use them if it was very expensive. Seeing art related hoarding triggers me but in a good way. It is a true thing that happens to artists!

Fantastic content! I will likely listen again to catch all the great points you all made. Loved listener Grace's tip at the end. On 2 separate trips to Indonesia and Botswana, I brought several clothing items I knew I would happily part with. On the safari, I asked the camp host if I could leave some clothes and a compact shopping bag in my room for the cleaning personnel to take. I didn't want to offend anyone. Anyway, he said that would be great as the staff share stuff left behind with their local village nearest to the camp. Was a feel good moment for me and I made sure I didn't do something inappropriate. Plus I had lots more room for my souvenirs which I made sure were made by locals and supported the immediate community versus crap made in China.

I'm currently in survival mode, doing a PhD. I still have hobbies and passions, but because of how intense grad school is, I am forced to put it all on the backburner unless they can directly help me through this intense period of my life. Participating in those interests has become a reward for me whenever I do something good in my program, which just makes those extra hobbies even more enjoyable. But for the most part, I'm all in on academics for the next 3 to 4 years.

I'm doing a lab based research master's degree and I related to your comment a lot, of course my course being an intense 1 year course is a bit different to your intense 3-4 years. I love having many hobbies and I've had to stop doing a lot of them for now. As you said due to the 'survival mode' and just lacking time and energy, I am really looking forward to going back to them next year. But I agree with spending time mindfully doing a hobby feels very special and feels like a reward after a long lab day! Good luck for the rest of your PhD! 💪🏻 having balance between academics and hobbies/life is so important

I have a lot of things I like to do that I don't consider hobbies. We go camping with what we consider basics...a tent, blow up mattress, flashlights, bedding, blankets, coolers, etc. Most of those items are also used in our house. We do more cabin camping because so many campers don't abide by the quiet hour rules...they drink and party in state parks, which disturbs all of the campers. It requires less equipment and can be done in the colder months. Summertime it's almost impossible to get an affordable pet friendly cabin anymore. Winter renting one is cheaper than renting a hotel room. I have goldfish, but they're not a hobby, they're pets. I feed them mosquito larvae which keeps us healthier. I use their water to feed my plants which is great for all. The fish need their water changed and the plants get thirsty. I garden which requires minutes of my day, a hoe, tomato cages, and a shovel. I'm expanding our property into a giant garden. My husband put in a brick walkway. He put the dirt into piles. I'm using that dirt to smooth out our front yard and the stones to create pathways. You don't need a lot of extra stuff, you just need to be creative.

6:48 love what is said here, I don't consider myself a minimalist in terms of how it is stereotyped online in fact I'm basically a stereotypical maximalist. The fact that y'all said to not push yourself to own less just because you guys, The Minimalist said so shows that minimalism is not about owning less physical things but it's about intentionally owning things, as I mentioned I'm basically a maximalist but everything I own "sparks joy" I make sure everything I own sparks joy, so even though it's a lot of stuff if it's all intentional and sparks joy I'm technically a minimalist, lastly it's good to see that minimalism can help people like who are not really minimalist on making sure that the tons of things I own are still intentional and not just for the sake of wasting money.

As a baker and a highly creative individual - I dwell on collecting ceramics / and different moulds for different pastries - you see as someone who likes to experiment on her own as a self taught baker - this checklist becomes accumulated the more I wish to expand my creativity - especially when I am so deeply inspired by bakers on Pinterest / I agree on the accessories getting in the way but sometimes we need these accessories to enhance the creativity - I find it such an obstacle to take away the accessories in baking - till today I am still trying to declutter my baking accessories - are there any minimalists bakers here? However I've a small size kitchen therefore all my accessories are chuck into cupboard and even though it was being kept in containers - ants tend to find their way in my sugar/flour that is really difficult for storage - that these days I dont get ingredients immediately. I love baking but I think the joy gets taken away through the washing up / and the aesthetic photography for the end product even though I don't tie my self worth for the end product. Most of the time my hobbies becomes my side hustles - however I am an experimentalist therefore I collect everything that I wish to try out so before baking I tried out watercolour art - and I was collecting brushes/ paint / that I lost my interest in it because the investment was burning a hole in the pocket. " try to be minimalist in the earlier on in the hobby / and get to know yourself in relation to the hobby so that you won't be overcommitted" well if only I knew this earlier - thanks tk.
