Millenials are trying to combat the hoarding mentality which came from earlier generations. From Hummels to Longaberger baskets to saving rubber bands and old newspapers, we started this mess! We can learn from this younger generation on this topic.

@@incognitoincignito I was talking mostly about the fact that the US healthcare system is a nightmare hell-scape. The younger gen are simply condensing other generations' knowledge via social media and whatnot. I think "hoarding" made sense to much older generation where everything was expensive and very few things were convenient. A kind of scarcity mindset. Not sure what portion of younger generations, esp. gen z, are doing things "right" and what are totally mind-rotted by being media illiterate like much older generations.

Maybe that's when I'm more fully in alignment rather than choosing and in motion due to conditioning. I do love living 'in flow'. One thing that I learned from Marie Kondo's book that really resonated is that the purpose of a gift is to be given and received. Once that has happened and you've gotten the joy of receiving it, any additional value is just bonus. If you don't get any more value, that's fine and releasing the gift or card is not an act of disrespect.

Also HELLZ YEAH YOU DID AWESOME! Insurance sucks - I found out that I never officially selected a primary physician with my insurance co for my stupid HMO plan (did it at the dr's office and thought that would be enough - merp), so now I need to go through their stupid appeals process on that, so I feel the struggle. But - silver lining! Now you know that there's an issue with your insurance that needs to be addressed. I know it's anxiety inducing in and of itself, but it'd be worse NOT knowing until you're in a sitch where you go to seek care only to be told that you're not actually insured, I think?

As a 57-year old, generally responsible, mostly effective, well-respected professional, I still - STILL - repeatedly discover I’ve made ridiculous mistakes (or occasionally, that unfortunate circumstances have befallen me), like canceling a credit card and unknowingly losing my medical insurance … it’s so frustrating. The only thing that helps me avoid feeling like I’ve put an idiot (me) in charge of my life, is to remind myself that personal growth often takes a “two steps forward, one step back“ pattern. I try to put an action plan in place to keep from making the same mistake again (especially since I know some fresh new mistake is just waiting around the corner for me). 🙄Thanks for always sharing so honestly, Caroline. 🥰

sometimes when you declutter your life you discover a new area to declutter. that's why the dental insurance task was great. bc imagine if you DIDN'T push yourself to do it today, and maybe you didn't discover your insurance thing until after a health emergency of some kind. definitely a win. you'll sort the whole thing out and be in much better shape soon. I use timers all the time but never thought of making a list with time limits for each task, that's brilliant. Also due to your discussion of hoarding and greeting cards in a prior video, I was able to take the greeting card from my doctor's office wishing me well after my surgery last week and release it to the recycling bin. I would have held onto it otherwise (don't ask me why, madness is only answer).

And last night, this occurred to me: I visualized empty drawers, and then thought-if I give all that away, where will “I” be? It was a little scary, but then I thought: where is all the stuff from when I was 5, 14, or 20 years old? I don’t carry all that around, yet I’m still here. I guess I’ll still be me, but maybe free to be somebody new? Thank you for this wonderful help and hope.

This is everything I could ever want mushed into one beautiful artistic masterpiece. I mean you basically just saved me time so now I have more time to be present and get dental insurance! P.S. the black top perfectly takes you from decluttering to date night! 😘

Thank you for keeping the dental insurance outcome in the video along with some of your reaction to it and the reframing you did in the moment. That was objectively bad news that removes an element of safety and peace of mind from your situation while also putting additional tasks on your list. It was comforting for me to see that and potentially helpful to others who are struggling. I'm confident that you will figure this thing out and everything will be fine, but that was a very human moment you shared with the world and I appreciate that you are able to trust your viewers with that vulnerability.

Yep. Craft stuff and a gift closet that looks great and doesn’t serve much purpose aside from looking great. I love my friends and family but would rather go out together as my treat instead of shopping under pressure and buying stuff they don’t need and may or may not want. I’m grateful for gifts I receive but I don’t need them and can easily buy stuff I do need. Still, it’s a good looking closet and it does make me happy to look at it and see how organized I can be when I want to be.

I had excess art supplies because of my hobbies. They were good quality but just more than I needed. I also take adult art classes and noticed that the school I go to had programs for kids too. So, I donated my extra art supplies to an art teacher who teaches drawing to pre-teens. They loved the supplies. Better quality than they are used to AND I know they are being put to good use. Is there a local group that does arts and crafts with kids you can donate to? Summer youth programs abound. Maybe a summer camp or after-school program near you?

My favorite was when my mom called me once and opened with "Hi, I don't have a lot of time to talk" and so I was like "oh okay, did something happen??" and she just sighed, "no, I'm just on my way to pick something up" but before I could finish a sentence she cut me off and was like "I have to let you go, I just got there" in an exhausted tone. Like thank you for thinking of me, but could you have perhaps waited until you were not actively in the middle of an apparently stressful errand?

Love this whole thing. And the mom part of me is SO PROUD of you for finding out you don't have health insurance. That's huge, and so glad that you found out now rather than in a moment when you really need it but then suddenly don't have it. So it's really great that you put dental insurance on your list! You nailed that whole list, arguably in an even bigger way. I'm not sure if that was a bottle of honey you threw out of the pantry cupboard as 'old,' but FWIW to anyone reading this who doesn't already know, honey never goes bad and never expires! As long as you don't introduce anything into the honey (like, only ever use a clean spoon/dipper/whatever to get honey from the container, don't double dip if you've used that spoon to stir something or have licked it) it has no expiration. Some archaeologists found some honey from 3500 years ago and it was still fresh. Same with 5000-year-old honey. Never goes bad! And if honey crystallizes, gently heating it in a warm water bath can melt down the crystals and make it liquid again (you have to change the water out as it cools). Honey is magical stuff.

Love that dental insurance falls under the "existential dread" category. I concur. Also, as an aside: Loving the slightly unhinged Instagram stories you're putting up lately. I'm here for it. More of that please. This video-specific commentary: Thank you for that little interlude about how dropping out of a habit doesn't mean you're no longer that thing/not beating yourself up for letting things get on top of you. Currently doing a lot of self-flagellation about letting myself be treated poorly by someone I cared about but who clearly didn't actually care about me, despite his protestations to the contrary. Your little pep talk reminded me none of us are perfect all the time. Also, thank you for making me really, actually laugh for the first time in a few days. Finally: I too do not have health insurance in the US and it's a massive pain in the financial ass. I wish you the best of luck in fixing it. My solution was run back to Europe, where it really doesn't matter because everything is cheap to pay out of pocket if you have to (plus I have residence in the UK for the next four months at least, which means I have access to the NHS. I'll double back across the insurance-less bridge when October is over). Anyway, love you and your channel. Thank you for being a light in the dark.

This is so relatable. Honestly your house looks great. I've been working for about a year now trying to get to the point where decluttering takes an hour or less like this and your honesty about the process is refreshing. I think that's missing in a lot of other videos about this topic. My family and I have moved about 4 times in the last decade and things got pretty ugly for a hot minute. We had a fire in one home we were renting and a flood in another. It can make you really anxious around the prospect of investing in any nice furniture or storage to contain your stuff because you worry about it getting ruined. Still haven't found our forever home, but we've stopped expecting the worst and we're allowing ourselves to feel settled where we're at right now and it's helped so much. Our next move and our next home is gonna be a lot more enjoyable because of that. Definitely also relate to the frustration around insurance. It's a pain.

This declutter video has humor, great advice, and support! Thanks for reminding us to give ourselves grace! Love the timer method! Like how you also include two list for declutter and life. I have been watching Diane in Denmark videos here on KZread she uses the timer method when discussing decluttering, too! Diane in Denmark usually does videos on Fridays where she gives four-self assignments one could choose from each week like find new music and try a new recipe. Thanks for the motivation, Caroline!

SO inspired to declutter now! I’m expecting my first bb in October and feeling overwhelmed with the amount of stuff that’s sitting and collecting dust, so I needed this push to start with baby steps 😉 Thank you Caroline! Also want to say that I never get as much joy from watching the sponsored/ad portion of people’s KZread videos as I do from watching yours ❤ this was goooood

Coming out of an anxiety spiral today and this was a little ladder I needed. I'm at work right now but I might go home and declutter something tonight. Love your channel, I hope you have insurance soon.

Dealing with insurance and other adulting matters always get in the way of my decluttering days because it takes up so much time! Kudos to you that you didn't let it derail your efforts!

Mom’s calling as soon as they start doing something loud and annoying on the phone is absolutely a universal mom characteristic. Similarly, when you call Dads - they never seem to call you back until long after you’ve already returned home and/or have the answer to the question you wanted to ask them.

Had a really bad day and felt like I wouldn't get anything done at all today, but now I've set a timer for decluttering my closet for 15min, so today is going to contain a small win. You made my day better, thank you :)!

I feel you on all the cards that you've kept! In my family, it's tradition to write really lovely heartfelt letters for all birthdays and other events, so when I was a teenager I kept them all in one box, and when the box was full, I had to go through and declutter. I still have some lovely letters that are home made cards, I think my nan sent me a picture of her twice! I keep all the ones with personal stories in them, with the pictures of grandparents that have passed on, but maybe I need to go and find another container again as they are just taking up a corner in my paperstuff drawer. I also lost my favourite auntie 2 days ago so I fully support the sentiment of calling (or texting) someone and telling them you love them. Thank you for another really insightful video ❤❤❤

I have been putting off watching this because I convinced myself that your idea of clutter was very very minimal and not real. You definitely have less than I do,but this video has been just what I needed to help boost my mood and encourage me to get back to decluttering, but I am going to try your method of timing the task with a written list. Thanks as always!

When I was younger, I thought I was lazy because that’s what my adults told me. Turns out I’m just a naturally super-efficient person. Re: cards, etc, I keep cards for a few months and then get rid of them. The exception is when I get handmade cards from my friend who has a paper crafting KZread channel. They are works of art. Call your local insurance person and let them figure this out for you. It’s what they do. You rock! Love your content! 🥰🥰🥰

Thank you for the inspiration! I did just the same now. Counting minutes is so helpful for feeling in control and not overwhelmed. I've never included the "existential dread" stuff in my to-do list before, so that's such a great idea.
