Enneagram Type 1 Everything You Need To Know? | Pastor Matt Brown | Sandals Church Sermon

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of the Reformer.
Practice makes perfect, but for the reformer, perfection is the primary goal. The desire to do what is right can quickly go wrong, but the goodness and determination of a reformer type can also turn a lot of wrongs right again.
Know someone who considers themselves a perfectionist or someone in a relationship with one? Invite them to a watch this video where Pastor Matt will be talking about the good, the bad and the ugly traits of The Reformer type.

    Little did I know after randomly searching the internet for more info on my newly discovered Enneagram Type 1 that I would come across this truth bomb to my heart. Probably a God thing, to be honest....I've been really struggling lately with expecting perfection of everyone around me and then being always disappointed and angry....and here I found something that speaks right to that. Thank you for giving me perspective, so powerful.

    Thank you for posting these. I didn't do the personality diagnostic; but as a recovering addict, I went from a fool to mostly a 1 when God changed me. I found myself harvesting resentment towards the world and my old friends because God woke me up and they stayed being idiots. I also struggle with condemning myself for my past and how foolish I was/can be at times. Praying to forgive the world also helped me forgive myself . Because people must have been as mad at me at one point as I've become with others . And if I can forgive them, I can also let the pain of my past go entirely. It also helped me connect with God on a deeper level, because my Idea of God and his perfection is only my perception , And my perception is flawed, his perfection is not. So I let go of my conception of him and prayed he would show me more of who he really is to my heart. My biggest struggle is turning off my intellect, and opening my heart to the holy spirits intuition. This video helped with some of that . God bless. From Minnesota

    From Jay Medenwaldt's second part of the scientific dismantling of the Enneagram: "So why is it that such a questionable tool could be so helpful for so many people? The short answer is that our thinking is governed by quick thinking mechanisms that make life easy for us, but unfortunately, they also lead us astray sometimes. A good book on the subject is Thinking, Fast and Slow." It's important to know how our minds actually work and why we're open to poorly constructed theories like the Enneagram.

    Even if these teachings seem helpful and good, they are rooted in mysticism. The Bible warns us that even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). 2 Timothy 4:3-4 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

    This sermon was such a blessing!!! But these are the bible verses, that at least for me as a Perfectionist, bring me hope. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among the people, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He *said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give water to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life, without cost. The one who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son. Revelation 21:1‭-‬7 NASB2020

    I've learned to differentiate between my will and God's will. I would have all people be the best they could be at all times. Everyone would be held accountable and justice would be swift upon them. But then there would be no forgiveness, or grace, or mercy. I cannot be right all the time, not always am I patient enough to withhold judgement. But I know that God is forgiving and patient, so I strive to be the same whenever possible.

    I’m really appreciating the sermon series! Thanks for posting. I lean towards a 1 and I think the core sin thing isn’t quite right. Anger is an emotion, not a sin. Even Jesus was angry. I think from looking at my own tendencies criticalness and judgement (which could, for some, lead to rage or bitterness or gossip) are closer to the target.

  • @rideswithchrist

    @rideswithchrist

    Jill, I have been asking God about my anger because as a 1, I was having a hard time finding sin in my life (which sounds so snobby as I type that) but he kept bringing me back to Anger. Anger is the root of my sin as it causes me to start judging others, then getting SO angry at things I can't fix in people that I fly into a rage (like at my kids) or I get in the car and gossip about what everyone is doing wrong and get bitter because no one sees my right. The root is anger. I am angry that no one sees things like I see them. So yes, anger is the root of sin in my life. I agree with what you say that anger is not a sin, but for me, I am learning that anger causes me to sin in my heart. I may not go out and get drunk, but I sure can judge those that do...both are sin.

    While anger is an emotion, he actually said that allowing your anger to CONTROL YOUR FOLLOWING actions is the sin. In your case, maybe the gossiping but being judgmental, critical of others and having self righteousness are some others he listed. He is actually spot on with the core sin.

Don't be misled too!

Despite the enneagram's origins, it holds truth to it regarding psychology and how our minds work. He utilizes a tool that is often misinterpreted and misused to reach different types of people.

  • @andrewcramer9200

    @andrewcramer9200

    @@kaleightodd9873 Actually, it does not hold any truth regarding psychology and how our minds work. 150 mental health experts were polled in a study (Koocher, et al, 2014) and called the Enneagram the 2nd most-discredited tool behind the Szondi test. The International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences called MBTI, the Enneagram and other typologies "a form of divination" (not a Christian text). Patrick Vermeren is an HR expert who has close relationships with many psychologists in order to find best practices for hiring employees. He wrote a book on the subject that is hard to find, but he was generous enough to post his chapter on the Enneagram freely on the book's website. The chapter is entitled "Myth 8: The enneagram can teach us something about our personality." Jay Medenwaldt is a PhD candidate in psychology at Baylor U and has made the Enneagram part of his dissertation. He uses actual, useful information on how our minds work and has stated multiple times that the Enneagram should not be used. His latest post on his personal website concludes: "The overwhelming majority of scientific evidence shows that the enneagram does not accurately describe how people are, how they think, how they act, or how they grow. It has negative effects that are often overlooked while most of its apparent positive effects can be explained through other psychological mechanisms." So who should I trust? Laypeople like Matt Brown, who have not studied psychology at any level, much less a Masters or PhD? Or the huge majority of MA/PhDs in Psychology who either mock the Enneagram, or have never even heard of it because it's not actually taught by any serious institutions? Or maybe I should listen to Helen Palmer, who IS a PhD in psychology, but also claims to have psychic powers/ESP? LOL. No thanks. Medenwaldt and another PhD, Jennifer Fayard, even admitted there was a time they believed in stuff like the Enneagram or MBTI or whatever "typology", but once they had to take more challenging courses and do hard research on the human mind and behavior, they realized why it was bogus. I think we would be wiser to listen to people like them. OH, and the origins are completely occultic. LOLOLOL. But yeah, such a wonderful, compassionate tool.

    Claim: It seems that the Enneagram is a useful tool. It is a tool for transformation, understanding, self-knowledge, growth, discernment. Response: The Enneagram uses a lot of terms that are undefined, including the term “tool”. In fact, no book or teaching on the Enneagram even attempts to define what is meant by “tool”, but instead depends on the audience for understanding. One must guess the meaning, and assuming “tool” means something for making tasks easier, one should be able to measure how well it makes them easier. If it facilitates discernment, then it must be possible to know and test how it facilitates discernment, or how it does not do so, and to what degree. In order to evaluate the usefulness of a tool, one must measure whether the tool caused a measurable effect on the task at hand or not. The enneagram itself does not measure self-knowledge or discernment, so an external tool must be used to measure these things. External may mean the person undergoing the process of discernment or knowing of oneself, but this is a subjective not an objective view. Self-reporting on one’s subjective feelings about how much change has occurred is not reliable and subject to error, and even self-deception. Understanding and discernment entail the use of reason and judgement, and in order to facilitate that, clear terms, sound judgements and valid conclusions should be abundant. However, the Enneagram has numerous vague concepts, unsound propositions, and invalid conclusions that don’t follow from their premises.

    No, the Enneatypes are all vague, people relate to multiple types all the time, this is a sign of its invalidity. Enneagram proponents have had to constantly change the rules of the system to keep up with the gaping flaws in the theory, to the point where you can presumably have a "triad" of 9w1w2-3w4w5-7w6w8. It's infantile.

    The enneagram is rooted in a spiritual lie that these 9 points reveal a deeper meaning to the universe. It is spiritual but not Biblical, and there are only 2 sides when it comes to the spiritual, of God and true or against God and false. The enneagram is an occult false teaching that has no place in the church.

    Thank you for your willingness to reply. I believe that Christians also need to understand that God is completing, not making something different. It’s His story, we just play a role in His story. God never needs to start again. He always gets it right. Anyway, thanks for replying... I appreciate your insight, and willingness to remain open minded and brave. The world needs more of people like yourself. May God bless you as well...

    Hi T_Meyah! I am a Christian and I must speak truthfully that we do not worship the same God. My God is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He is Jesus, the Messiah, Who not only died for all of our sins but rose from the dead in victory over sin, hell, and the grave. I know we do not serve the same God because my God is love! I don't have to perform to earn His love, I don't have to wonder and be insecure if I am loved and forgiven by Him or if I'm going to heaven. I have *certainty* of His great love! I have the *sure hope and faithful promise* of heaven awaiting me. I pray with all my heart that you come face-to-face with the God of the universe, the King of Kings, Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world! God bless you in JESUS name:)

    The Enneagrams origin with Gurdjieff and Shaykh Abdullah of Naqshbandi Sufi Order: Shaykh Sharafuddin (q) asked Shaykh `Abdullah (q) to host their guest. Shaykh `Abdullah recounted the events of the meeting to several of his murids many years later. As soon as they met, Shaykh `Abdullah said, "You are interested in the knowledge of the Nine Points. We can speak on it in the morning after Fajr prayer. Now you eat something and rest." At Fajr time Shaykh `Abdullah called Gurdjieff to come and pray with him. As soon as the prayer finished, the Shaykh began to recite Surat Ya Sin from the Holy Qur'an. As he finished reading, Gurdjieff approached him and asked if he could speak of what he had just experienced. Gurdjieff said: Through your spiritual power I was able to ascend to the knowledge of the power of the Nine Points. Then a voice, addressing me as `Abd an-Nur, said: 'This light and knowledge have been granted to you from the Divine Presence of Allah to bring peace to your heart. However, you must not use the power of this knowledge.' The voice bid me farewell with the salutation of Peace and the vision ended as you were finishing the recitation from the Qur'an." The Enneagram image above Holds the Secret of The 9 Points , 9 States of Humanity, 9 Sultan al Awliya Shaykh `Abdullah replied, "Surat Ya Sin was called 'the Heart of the Qur'an' by the Holy Prophet and the knowledge of these Nine Points was opened to you through it. The vision was by the blessings of the verse: 'Peace! a Word (of salutation) from a Lord Most Merciful' [36:58]. "Each of the Nine Points is represented by one of nine Saints who are at the Highest Level in the Divine Presence.

    "Grandshaykh `Abdullah (q) used to serve in his master’s khaniqah. Everyday hundreds of visitors arrived to visit the Shaykh, most of them coming from Daghestan. Among the many visitors to the Shaykh was the Russian teacher George Gurdjieff. Having recently arrived in Turkey, the knowledge of these Nine Points was opened to you through it. The vision was by the blessings of the verse: ’Peace! a Word (of salutation) from a Lord Most Merciful’ [36:58]." -Naqshbandi website "Each of the Nine Points is represented by one of nine Saints who are at the Highest Level in the Divine Presence. They are the keys to the untold powers within man, but there is no permission to use these keys. This is a secret that in general will not be opened until the Last Days when the Mahdi (as) appears and Jesus (as) returns."-Shaykh Abdullah Faiz al Daghestani Al-Naqshbandi "This meeting of ours has been blessed. Keep it as a secret in your heart and don’t speak of it in this life. `Abd an-Nur, for that is your name with us, you are free to stay or go as your responsibilities allow. You are always welcome with us. You have attained safety in the Divine Presence. May Allah bless you and strengthen you in your work". -Shaykh Abdullah Faiz al Daghestani Al-Naqshbandi

    Idries Shah, a populariser of Sufism, has claimed that the enneagram has a Sufi provenance and that it has also been long known in coded form disguised as an octagram.[4] Another claim to a Sufi provenance is offered by the Sufi Enneagram website.[5] The archives of the Naqshbandi Sufi order of Daghestan have been claimed to provide an account of a meeting between Gurdjieff and Shaykh Sharafuddin Daghestani in which the secret of the nine points was transmitted to Gurdjieff.[6]

    all of this is just plain evil, it doesn't make any sense, it is not biblical, becoming a Christian is not about us it's about HIM, HIS WILL AND HIS PORPUSES, AND the bible is definitely all about GOD, and only GOD, Jesus said: "For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. Matthew 16:25" Test the spirit brothers and sisters, the gospel is not about us its about HIM! When did we ever read Jesus saying he was a type 8 or 4 or whatever!! Wake up!

    I am a Christian - a follower of Christ - it can be a challenge, but Jesus said there would be trials/persecutions; but Jesus said blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake. As a Christian, you're not just a number or a letter: you're born again as a new creation, in Christ. Enneagrams, Myers Briggs are just tools that lazy spiritualists use to justify their behavior. Repent!

The enneagram is not generally considered to be of any value by mainstream psychologists." rationalwiki.org/wiki/Enneagram "Unless you've done graduate work in psychometrics, the scientific data probably doesn't mean a whole lot to you (which is why there are two parts to this article).
