This really hit close to home! I was the only child I ever knew who colored inside the lines. I also relate deeply to those moments of serenity like staring at the Christmas tree and I feel lucky that I experience those moments often. I almost feel grateful that I was raised by very loosy-goosy parents because it probably softened my oneness a lot XD

So funny, I can relate very much “to live in grace” with “ I want to live in love with life” haha cos I know I have moments like that!! And the self-picking makes so much sense now, massive inner critic. And I quitted wanting to change others, but I’m deeply transforming myself. And also stopping to be a “barking dog” (used to be so much and also can relate) to the world, it makes no sense. People will change themselves if they want to! Thank you.

Random notes while listening to your excellent as always lecture: The One Drive: perfectionism. "I don't need you to like me, I just want you to know I'm right (for your own good), then you'll like me." (Ha!) Riso says 1's have trouble with father (or men) for being selfish and not always "virtuous." Reverend Dimmesdale in Scarlet Letter: repressed sexuality, preaches against lust while engaging in it. Workaholics, who need problems to solve, will create them if none are available. "I am a good boy or girl/afraid I'm not -- but I know YOU'RE not." (Projection, angry and self-righteous at people's anger and self-righteousness.) Aunt Polly/Schoolmarm who hates/is obsessed with Tom Sawyer little boys. (Which is why so many freethinkers have problems in school, run by 1's and 6's with a 9 principal, all of whom are threatened by passion and success (as shown by 3's, 4's, 7's, 8's).) Poor at multi-tasking (moreso than 5's for whom they can be mistaken.) Great at diligent detail-work. Lab workers. They also need moral purpose and service, unlike 5's who tend to doubt such. Accountants, treasurers, reformers, Satan-stranglers, Born-Agains. Church Lady on Saturday Night Live. "They have to have their way" -- Cardinal Richelieu, Captain Bligh."Oh ye scribes and pharisees ..." (Best policy with a 1: Let them teach you and serve you and help you -- "I hear you" is the best reply to them. "The best thing to do with advice is to pass it on, it can never be of any possible use to oneself." -- Oscar Wilde.) If 1's have a 2 wing, they can be more fun and socially engaging, like you, Richard. "To keep making it more perfect" but not to desperately need it to be perfect is a safe strategy for 1's. 1's naturally tend to evolve to 7's and so become more fun, experimental, and accepting as they grow/convert. 1's are like Virgos, they need to learn to ask for what they want, rather than wait for their servile dedication to be naturally rewarded. Also stroking and nurturing others from the heart can really really help their magic and loving purity to be expressed. (Swiss clocks.) (I once did a psychic reading party for a Swiss group, it was like reading Swiss clocks -- normally at least most one's will argue with me to prove I am not as accurate as I think!)

With regards to the story about crossing a road in Switzerland there's a good reason the law requires you to cross at designated places and it has to do NOT just with road safety (and even less to do with assumed anal retentiveness on the part of the citizenry) but also to do with the question of liability as well. There's a difference between being run over at an official crossing and elsewhere on the same road. Both painful to be sure but in a country like Switzerland, if you're run over at an official crossing the driver's insurance will compensate for injuries and or death. I'm sure the requirements are the same in most countries. That aside, I'm very new to the ideas of enneagram, As luck would have it I am a 1 so I understood very clearly the characteristics of a personality type 1. It seems that the driving force of this personality type is anger, Dissatisfaction might a be a more just term. The word 'anger' seems to imply a negative quality when in most cases we (number ones) tend to be frustrated at not achieving our intended goals or aims. It;s clear to me now, even after a brief introduction (and this was a very good lecture on the subject -informative, entertaining and thought-provoking) that I need to just round over some of my rougher edges before I become one of those bores who feels he has an inalienable right to proffer his view and judgement on everything including compensation for vehicular injuries on Swiss roads.

to say that 4s "like depression" is a misunderstanding.. what we need is to be HONEST with our emotions maybe we trust them too much, maybe we over idealize or over romanticize them but isn't that the very definition of the artist archetype? we seem to be the only type able and willing to go all the way wherever our emotions lead us.. surely that's a commendable virtue

One of the things Fr. Richard says at most of his conferences is that his explanation is not the whole, nor does he ever claim it to be. He's always asking people to hold on to the parts that are true. Picking apart his style and what he omits is missing the point of what the Enneagram is and does. Saying someone is dishonest about something because they leave out things, well, I guess we are ALL dishonest then. He has more credibility BECAUSE he doesn't act like he's the ONLY expert or that he's perfect. It's called GRACE, which he goes onto say about One's is very hard for them to get. Watching 2 or three videos isn't getting the whole. He doesn't 'tear' apart any number. He states the shadow side AND the gift side.

  • @Goddeify

Yes, i really see what you are saying and what he is saying. I have this particular dvd which is really great, and watched it many times. One's own ego is going to get a little miffed when one finds out how our ego goes about its games. As an 8, it is not easy listening at first, and having done much work on myself, the hard yards come when I recognize when i'm in the middle of my suffering as an 8. Intense, confronting, challenging etc and its not easy to face the 'hardness.' We are the ultimate hard people and the growth for me has been to let Grace bring me to powerlessness, weakness and vulnerability. Grace is working on me, as i would not be able to do it myself. Thanks for putting these up.

You hit the nail on the head, Melissa. The whole concept of one's gift also being one's downfall is difficult for some to get their heads around. Like Yin and Yang...you can't really understand or appreciate what the positive attributes of your gift actually are if you don't understand the worse traits of your personality are.

I so agree with you Barbie Kat. I wish he'd describe ones as completely unhealthy as he describes sixes. I like some of the things I've read by Richard Rohr but he's lost me on this. If he described ones at the level he does sixes here's what we'd hear: To save their self image they justify themselves and silence criticism, closeminded, and allow no compromises or negotiations, bitter, misanthropic, perfectionist, opinionated, and highly self-righteous. Condemning and cannot stop themselves. Ones basically are the "Older brother" type of Christian that Timothy Keller. It's not that this guy is so wrong, it's just that he seems to point out the flaws of ones that are easy to swallow, but he points out all the lower health levels of sixes but stays at about the middle level of health for ones... clearly we all like to see our flaws as not as bad as others. I would have expected more from him... but I've learned that Christians are as self deluding as the rest of the world:(

Hahah yeah totally, he was really going into the Hitler and Nazi comparisons for the 6 at worst. But honestly I think it's possible that every religious zealot and fundamentalist in the world could be a 1 type - and some incredible atrocities have been committed and justified (or rationalized) in the name of what's 'right'. I've been close with a 1 for a few years, and I don't find they are super willing to admit their darkest side because they are trying so hard to be good and perfect.

I disagree with you entirely and think that you do not demonstrate objectiveness. These topics are not excuses for you or others to accuse, judge, compare or condemn people. They are not meant to stereotype people to imply everyone is a robot - exactly like the other. You sound very harsh and bitter - and who are you to say all Ones are what you described? Are you a god or an expert. The WHOLE point of this is that people all think they are better than certain others. We learn these to self-reflect. You are showing us what not to do as a human being. If learning more about something only seems to give you more resentment against others and not helping you to humblr yourself - then the problem may be that your heart is not right. Why are you badmouthing people?! Horrible!

That definitely depends. Sx1’s are perfectly happy breaching societal or interpersonal rules if it doesn’t abide by their idea of righteousness. The 1 is rule abiding and rule enforcing, but it may very well be their own set of morals and not others. Reformer in the idyllic sense is the “perfect” descriptor for the enneagram 1

  • @realjamin7354

There's a woman here commenting incorrectly that Ones all "save their self image they justify themselves and silence criticism, closeminded, and allow no compromises or negotiations, bitter, misanthropic, perfectionist, opinionated, and highly self-righteous. Condemning and cannot stop themselves." I have to say you are wrong at least about all Ones being this way. I agree with Richard's description NOT yours. First of all I don't give a dime what others think of me (most Ones don't). Secondly, we are definitely not closeminded - in fact many of us are very creative, adventurous and like to try new things. I literally know no one who's ever said that of me. Definitely not bitter towarsds people either - just the ills of the world. In fact we are mostly not self-aware, but more issues-aware. I don't know which ONE divorced you or offended so that much you had to be on a public domain putting down an entire group of people, but you are off and very judgemental. It has NOT occured to me that learning about general types is a way for us to attack total strangers and spread bitterness. But please check your heart - you seem to be way too bitter and biased. The whole point of this video is to find out about our motives and try to find grace. You completely missed it. And what is with the Christian-bashing at the end. I don't even know what you're trying to do watching this? This is not so you can load up extra ammunition to put others down.
