Beatrice Chestnut - Type 1 Enneagram Panel

Type 1 Panel on day one of the Enneagram Panel Workshop Series (Types 8,9 & 1) with Beatrice Chestnut and host, Michael Lerner
Enneagram is an archetypal depth psychology. It has enormous power to deepen our insight into ourselves and others. As a follow-up to our last TNS conversation with author and enneagram expert Beatrice Chestnut, we’re offering a three-part series of workshops to explore enneagram further in depth. Each workshop will feature a three- to five-person panel of enneagram “types”.

I'm a female type 1. For those who were wanting the voice of a female, just pretend I said what was said in this video because there isn't anything else I would add. I can relate to everything these guys said and I've had the same experiences.

im 1w9 and coworker years ago is 1w2. She seemed to handle work issues similar to how I would or I just learned from how she handles stress. Also she's like 10 years older. I really related to her and I don't know if she necessarily related to me but I wouldn't know if she knows the enneagram and I appreciated the authenticity. She was respected by all my other coworkers because she knew the job, and knew how to teach it. I shared snacks from the store on breaks haha least I could do.

Love these guys - their honesty, sincerity, openness and humour. One's can be pretty funny when they talk about their foibles; it helps them cope with their Inner Critic and lighten up. I also thought Beatrice did a great job of summarising the strengths and challenges of the One without being judgemental (which I, as a One, appreciated). I did notice that a couple of the comments on this post are a bit negative towards this Enneagram type. The thing is, every type is needed to make up humanity. We're all on a journey, learning to be more loving towards ourselves and others, and each type is here to help each other to do that. Looking forward to listening to the rest of the other panels.

It would have been good to have a female 1 fixation too as it feels as if there is a missing element and energy with only male speakers, although this is a great and useful discussion of this particular enneagram point.

Both thumbs up and toes as well ! This is really so powerful and i love it so very much. I want to thank everyone who is so generous to step in and share the most intimate part of yourselves and to allow others to learn more about the types in a very authentic way first hand. it allows me to savour it, play back and pause when i need to and come back to it and then replay it again. in the privacy of my own home in Singapore watching this, I feel so comfortable that I have learned to appreciate the various types and feel a sense of closeness with them. many of them have done this work for a long time and yet they are so humble to share their struggles. I am so touched! NAMASTE!

Thanks so much for this very in depth discussion and reflection. Inner critic work is so fascinating and vital, I appreciated the perspective these gentleman brought to it. I like to look at inner critic growth as transformation into the loving parent voice (often highjacked by the voice of an abusive parent). And eventually, as we grow, we don't need so much input from our parents anymore. But it does not mean we need none 😊

It's so sad how it seems that most 1s become that way out of trauma. I also was abused in my childhood, however by both parents. They were very emotionally immature and I kind of took it upon myself to be the responsible one. To be very moralistic while my parents showed morally devious behavior (cheating, drinking, car accidents, rage episodes that tore the house apart) etc,. I thought I was a 9, 5 and 4 for a while. Considered 6 as well but it didn't quite fit. Self-preservation 1 is the actual fit. I fear being wrong so much and getting attacked that I get stuck in analysis paralysis and prefer to do right by others instead. I want to do the right, moral thing because nobody else would. I want to be kind and fair to others because nobody was to me as a child. I get surreptitiously angry when I am confronted by dehumanizing points of views or statements. Regressive ideologies and unfair treatment of others. People think I look down on them. More often than not I don't really... I look down the most on myself. I know all of my failures and mistakes within an inch of my body and soul. When another person points then out it's just another incessant reminder of what I am keenly aware of 24/7. Even when I sleep or drift into slumber, my wrongness follows me.

A great panel - thank you very much! Most people associate Gandhi with E1, but Naranjo has studied him intensely, and according to his biography, considers him an sp6 who has developed the courage. This role was also worked on in the Seminar on Personalities, which I attended in September 2018. Of course, I can imagine both.

I had to answer the question(and preach a bit ;) ) Michael Lerner raised regarding the evolution of inner critique. I am an ENTJ 1w2 so/sx here btw. As I have aged, I have become less critical of self and others. - My mantra for a while was, "Things are the way they are, because they evolved to be so." This allowed me to worry less about things beyond my control (Read evolutionary Physiology if you need help with this.) - Also I have realised that robustness is more important than perfection. Somewhat becoming contentious of the cost-benefit analysis (and understanding that humans do such calculations unconsciously.) I was aware of my flaws and the more I dwelled into why that happens, I saw the beauty of the human brain and that it was the design, not a bug. - We catch the critic getting things wrong! We do follow the critics solutions to its logical conclusion; we are stubborn and self disciplined to do that and eventually deconstruct the myth. By which time we would have gotten fedup of it too. We stop when we realize that its not perfect; in some sense we seek perfection at a different scale and relm! - I moved from logic to rationality (I was almost striving to be a 5! ... I had my INTP unconscious dominating over my ENTJ ego due to issues similar to the ones mentioned by the 3 ones on the panel!) which helped me immensely. "Things are not logical, but they are Rational."

Stumbled on a piece of treasure. Unbelievable panel. Might have to watch this at least a few more times. So much wisdom and strategies for us Ones to cope and live a healthier life. Pretty sure this criticism is because I’m a 1 but I would have liked to hear more from Newt. I think Dale (in the middle) was a little bit of a mic hog, so to remedy that in the future I think it should be made aware to the panel that each person would be allowed to answer the question. Especially when you have a panel of 1’s. Keeps things “fair” and everyone involved. I found this especially interesting because it was apparent that Newt was getting annoyed that Dale was hogging the mic. Between the two it became almost unbearable to watch. A case study of 1’s in itself.

A huge amount of Enneagram 1s are ISTJs. (See Wikipedia article on MBTI and Enneagram correlations). According to John Beebe Ti (introverted thinking) is the "critic" cognitive function that lives in the shadow of the ISTJ and INTJ. (Te) extroverted thinking being the parent function. Hence the inner critic of the Enneagram 9 is likely correlated to the introverted thinking (Ti) critic of the ISTJ, who make up the majority of Enneagram 9s.

  • @Sharkuterie327

I appreciate this suggestion. I found myself trying to guess mbti types! Dale especially seems like he might be ISTJ. I am INTJ, and likely type One (other candidate is type Five). One aspect of shadow Ti “critic” suggests distrust of the mind’s ability to be logically consistent, which presents a problem if feelings and instinct are also distrusted - the ability to discern truth or correctness is paramount for One, but there are no trustworthy internal mechanisms to find it, at least, not at first. Si or Ni perception must be confirmed. For IxTJ Ones, emphasis is placed on external data gathering and testing to provide empirical basis for what is more likely to be right. There is a high interest in efficient and elegant systems (INTJ) or respected and reliable processes (ISTJ).

Wow, at about 1:15, Dale declares he's a sexual subtype! This guy seems to me to be the prototypical Social One - cool temperament, physically lean and rangy, superior and correct in tone and manner, opinionated, and with no hint of overt anger expression. I would say rigid captures his ambience, as does the sense of teachy/preachy qualities.

The inner-critic is pretty useless in adult life. It may have served to keep a child safe but it becomes a hindrance to ones freedom as we become independent adults. The inner critic is a complex of beliefs and coping strategies which can be dissolved to a good degree, as I have experienced via my coach who has designed his own method called Individuation Dialectic.
