Helen Palmer ‘The Enneagram - Gateway To Spiritual Liberation’ Interview by Iain McNay
Helen Palmer ‘The Enneagram - Gateway To Spiritual Liberation’ Interview by Iain McNay
Author of 'The Enneagram: Understanding Yourself and the Others in Your Life' and 'The Enneagram in Love and Work: Understanding Your Intimate and Business Relationship' as well as other books on the Enneagram. In this interview she talks about how she first heard of the Enneagram and met with Claudio Naranjo in the 70s. At the time there were very few teachings that included the mystical realms along with a psychological understanding. She explains how the Enneagram can provide important pointers to the barriers to spiritual liberation. Self-observation and self-reflection are key as is concentration and witnessing consciousness.

This is perfectly brilliant. Be sure to watch BOTH interviews with Helen . Absolutely worth your time......
"The Will is not involved in Letting Go" ~ Helen Palmer (So insightful)
51:46 “It’s a faculty of human perception that operates by reflection, rather than conditioned apprehension”
Fantastic dialogue. I'm so fond of Helen Palmer.
'Observer is the observed. When you give complete attention, there is no observer at all. It is the observer that breeds fear because the observer is the centre of thought, it is the self. When there is no thought, there is no observer. That is not a blank state. That demands a great deal of inquiry, never accepting anything.' K
Helen, you have fulfilled your true reason to be. A most courageous soul who persevered and didn’t give up. A searcher who enriched us all. From another 6 I know how difficult the task.
51:18 shoutout to the lady in the back who laughs when Helen says “I don’t want to get into that”
I hope the meditation she did at the end has positive long-term effects. I've trained my attention to seek out the tension, but yes, i just plateau there. Nothing happens except a breath and then i forget what I'm doing and move on to something else. Ive never felt a long term benefit, or even a melting away of the tension that teachers say we're to experience with attention. In fact in my forties, ive developed anxiety, which speaks to how little i get out of just resting my attention on the tension.
What a marvelous dialogue and interview. Thank you🙏
pure brilliance, thank you Helen for all your wisdom and the wonderful meditation too.

amazing interview!
Excellent program
Brilliant. Thank you.
What a great human.
Very interesting thank you both
As other comments, this interview is very insightful. In the meantime, the meditation demonstration is very hypnotic.
Sure would like to hear more of her part 2 "Vice to Virtue" at 55:34 on all of the types - (I am not a 2 type, yet it was helpful just to hear her go through the thoughts and relaxing into for the 2! )
This is exactly what I needed to see today. Great video, thank you.
What she said is very similar to Advaita Vedanta. Witnessing consciousness = the Self which is free from Jiva = the person. Without knowing it, she has come to the same conclusion. But she misunderstood that witnessing consciousness is a capacity of the brain . Anyway,it was very interesting and useful to this interview because it gave me a short history of enneagram which has freed me from the spell of enneagram.

I know this is an old comment, hope you're still about. What do you mean you are free from the spell of the enneagram?
As a student of the east coast school, I understand there was some competition or rancor between her school and the one in New York. I regret the fact that i may have picked up on some kind of prejudice against her, however slight. I can't believe i missed out on this wisdom all these years. Whether it was sexism or just early- days enneagram competition, i regret any participation i may have had in it.
Conversion, is very useful 🥰
This Was Indeed 1 Of The Most Amazing Vids I've Come N Contact W/As A Link That (4Me) Has Shared Such A N4MD Base Of Knowledge Of Consciousness......My Awareness Of Love Is Xpanded & The Xperience Is Delightful..😊❤️🙏🏽 I Sincerely Thank U All... Blessings
At ~23:00, this indeed sounds like Remote Viewing, which Ian was alluding to.
We must distinguish the Enneagram of Personalities as a limited description of the entirety of the Enneagram understanding.
She seems more like an 8 or 1 to me. Great talk!

I agree. I was thinking 1, but the anxiety she had to contend with in her youth definitely says 6. My thought is she is now an integrated or “redeemed” 6 which takes on the energy of mature 9. We are likely seeing the 8 and 1 wings from this.

This a good example of the poor inter-rater reliability of the enneagram which is why Helen Palmer is part of only a minority of psychologists to support the enneagram, and is completely wrong.
@ minute 24, Iain McNay speaks of a technique he forgot its name. It is called "Remote Viewing".

An interesting take on these Enneagram types! Thanks for sharing to inspire my MBTI channel. Randomly discovered your channel through the KZread algorithm! 🤟🤟🤟

This is highly developed new age occultism. Please go watch The Origins of the Enneagram - Marcia Montenegro and Origins of the Enneagram - with Claudio Naranjo He admits most of his people characteristics came through automatic writing, ie channeling

But it works and is true and not a deceptive lie. I have never seen anything more accurate than the enneagram on personality.

Who told you that"e aborigines(original to where?) use the method in their focusing on a dot that is followed by the carved shape and the discipline of remaining with one colour until returned to the start,"and why do you believe them?
This is just so creepy😮
Remote Viewing is the technique Iain can't remember.
