I have not given up on Myers-Briggs. I love all personality typing systems. Each system maps something important about the nature of being. I use MBTI all of the time in coaching. And find it to be extremely helpful. The Enneagram and Myers-Briggs together gives a compelling look at personality.

What we said was, type 6s are the most likely type to 'poll' other's about their type. We have found this to be what 6s do to determine their type and do not see it with the other types.

Been reading "Personality Types using the Enneagram for Self- Discovery" by Don Richard Riso with Russ Hudson. It is a very interesting publication. I'm having a problem deciding what exactly my "Type" is. I am torn between 4 to 6 with Type 4 with a 5 wing as most likely a good description for me. I do agree we act different numbers over time as we deal with stress and I believe I shifted toward more like 6 under stress. Withdrawing more and more as I dealt with severe illnesses over much of my adult life. Now that I have transformed so much past the illnesses I feel that I am back toward 4 with a 5 wing or 5 with a 4 wing.

I guess since I am a 4w5 I love to intellectualize about human emotions. It is not enough to just feel passionately, I must analyze in terms of logic as well.

6 seek predictability because that is what they feel is lacking in themselves. 5 seek competence because that is what they feel is lacking in themselves. 4 seek identity because that is what they feel is lacking in themselves. All the personalities seem to seek after that which they feel is missing. They base their identities off of the missing piece.

David Faurve, Is there any data or statistic showing the demographics of where the world population falls into these 9 enneagram types. It can't be they fall exactly even into each of the types. I imagine type 8 would somehow be the least common. Your feedback is most appreciated. Thank you.

Speaking from my own experience, the enneagram can REALLY mean much in your life, pointing to the growth that can come from working with it! Hope this video helps people to, next to improving their outer world for happiness, work with their personality/inner world, wheretrough the outer world is rendered after all.

I am a 6 and I tend to poll others about who I am, not specifically my type but what they perceive in me that I am not perceiving. But I wouldn't use it to determine my type, just to broaden my perception. 'Maybe I'm missing something or hiding to me something or misinterpreting what I see...' Blah blah. My mind thinks this way and that's possibly the most telling hint of my type. About the lines connecting my type, I don't see too much 3 (almost no type 3), so it's arguable.

personality typing systems help us see these patterns. They are maps. Now is it so wrong to have two different collections of maps for the same thing? Of course not. The Myers-Briggs and Enneagram system are both different interpretations of personality. Like types themselves, neither one is "correct", they're just different.

You couldn't be more wrong about 3s not being a separate type. No other type places as much emphasis on success as we do, and no other type has the basic fear of worthlessness. Each type has a different motivation and fear which make the rest of the personality obvious. They're not one dimensional at all in my opinion, if you look more into them it becomes more apparent. 3s are definitely a unique type!

Sounds like you are a 6. 6 and 9 have the most trouble determining their type and frequently score differently on different tests at different times. They are also the only type that polls others to determine their type.

So, I can relate to 4, 7 and 8... people have typed me as an 8w7, but 4 keeps grabbing me also. Any thoughts? I feel like there can be aggressive 4s, deeply-feeling 8s... and it's not as cut-and-dry as it seems. I am a sexual subtype, if that helps.

so i should give up on myerrs and briggs and being an ENTP 7w6 3w2 1w9 and pay attention to the enneagram type? Sigh. It seems like I'm running in a hamster wheel which one of you guys is right? I've read tons of info on the subject.. a lot makes sense, and then some things I truly wonder about.. it's almost as if to say there is nothing definite and everything is random.. which doesn't help me at all! How can I use this to help other people if it's only 50-50? sigh.

As a type 9, I can relate completely to what Ben was saying, but I've been wondering about something he didn't mention. Is it common for type 9s to want to put their all into a goal/project that they're particularly interested in, almost to the point of perfectionism, or is this because I have a much bigger 1 wing than an 8 wing?

  • @Annabells117

The types seem too one dimensional to reflect personality. What's a person who's 7-5-3? Entertaining/ optimistic 7, deep thinker who doesn't prioritize close relationships 5, and achiever workaholic 3? In general, 3 doesn't seem like a separate type, since people in every type may have characteristics of 3

Few points I believe are relevant: 1) There are far too many people in the world to generalise them into 9 types, even 50 "types" wouldn't be enough. 2) We are primarily shaped by our past experiences and emotions, it would be wrong to say we are born into a type. 3) Self-fulfilling prophecy, a lot of these people seem to be telling themselves "This is how I am", and as such they reinforce the idea in their daily life by seeking evidence to back up the statement. This in itself is wrong. Until people let go of the past, stop thinking about the future and realise they are not their ego they will never truly know who or what they are.

'it would be wrong to say we are born into a type.' - parents who have more than one child know how different they are right from the beginning, or so I hear 'Self-fulfilling prophecy...' - Enneagram, as I understand it, does not 'box people', on the contrary it helps people see their box and therefore have the power to get out of it

The "brain cells" thing was funny... Yes, you do have neurons ( what he calls brain cells) in your whole body, not just the brain. If we follow his way of thinking there should be another type like the "Muscle" type or the "Skin" type, or the "Sensory" type because there are neurons there as well...BUT the ones found in your organs ( heart and "gut") and outside of your BRAIN have ZERO cognitive functions, meaning they don't change the way you think/act... This feels too much like a horoscope to me.. I'm out.
