    People commonly ask if they are born with their Enneagram type, when is it 'set', and if it can change. Our research clearly shows that one's Enneagram type is genetically based and one is born their type. One's type does not change during one's lifetime. That said, the healthy vs. stressed and unhealthy expression of each type is very different.

    Thanks David for the teacher-type list to help us further interpret the answers. Regarding when type enters, I've noticed in children that it's USUALLY predictable by early partial-word expression. But is there some Mendellian chart where heritability has been shown to follow hereditary patterns? Also, I only know of one case of identical twins with different types, and many with same base number. Is there any research you know of with more data on this. Thanks much for your work, and any responses you have to this inquiry.

    "Nature vs Nurture": As an astrologer who has also used the enneagram extensively, it is clear that each of us is born into our type and into the circumstances that "nurture" it. This is a wonderful discussion, and I have great respect for the participants. Thank you.

    I am an astrology skeptic who loves the enneagram. Can you refer me to a resource that can address my skepticism and point out astrology's usefulness? I know that many people find it useful, even predictive..but the one's who have the evidence that could change my mind usually use it to make money and thus have no evidence in sharing their reliable methods of using it to predict tendencies. Thanks you.

    Hi Jason, I guess I missed your reply when you posted it eleven months ago, and you have perhaps moved on, having found answers elsewhere. If not, and you are among the more open minded of the species, I suggest a couple of books that help to contextualize astrology for western minds. They are The Cosmic Loom by Dennis Elwell, and The Case for Astrology by John Anthony West. Another book, more recently published, that explores deeply into the microcosmic/macrocosmic view offered by cycles of the outer planets, is Cosmos and Psyche, by Richard Tarnas. It's true that many astrologers charge fees for their time, much like most other people in this world, who are required to make a living I hope this is helpful.

    The key thing that takes any type further along their direction of integration is when they grow in love. When a person grows toward hatred they will follow their direction of disintegration.

    In regards to what age your Enneagram is 'set' as asked in the comments, in brief, we see one's Enneagram Type as genetic. So one is born their Enneagram type and it stays the same for one's entire life. We have used micro expressions to type babies and more often than not they grew up to be the same type unless we made an error in typing, for example typing an SP 1 child as an 8.

I have made good in-roads; by teaching the Enneagram to cross-community groups., in Northern Ireland. My hope is that The Enneagram is taught in schools; brought to the attention of teachers, and their pupils.

    A “type” is an example of a conclusion. To conclude means to end awareness. We know it after all (have concluded or literally ended it) therefore there is no value placed on efforts at further awareness of what is. Man will make no effort to obtain that which he thinks he already has (such as awareness for example). - Gurdjieff The enneagram itself is a beautiful living symbol as presented and explored by Gurdjieff and his main pupils. For those looking for the real deal.

    It is a common misperception that the modern day use of the Enneagram is linked to the work of Gurdjieff. It is not. Although he used the symbol, he used a system of 7 personality types which were not used in conjunction with the symbol. The origin of the modern day use of the Enneagram is Oscar Ichazo. Teachers like Katherine and I have taken that work which was entirely heuristic (theoretical and personal observation) and extended it with empirical research greatly enhancing our understanding of each type.

    Dan, if you are still into the enneagram since making this post, I highly recommend considering that type never changes. One reason I prefer the E9 over other systems is that it measures something unchanging, and with that reference then predicts how each type will change on Introversion/extroversion, Intuitive/Thinking, Towards/Away, and all of the traits measured by other tools, depending on circumstances and personal choices. One analogy I like is that no tree is planted perfectly perpendicular to ground. And to the extent it leans in a direction, it will be stronger or weaker from winds and other forces from a particular direction. Of course, a mature tree can handle incredible winds from any direction because it's angle becomes a minor factor of its overall strength. But in the ways you find weakness in yourself, knowing your default "angle" of interaction with the world can help you to protect and strengthen those weaknesses.

    what are the links [if any] between the personality enneagram, and gurdjieff / fourth way?

  • @HandinMusic

    @HandinMusic

    7 жыл бұрын

    In no ways connected. The motivating desire to take up the personality enneagram is to find peace in relationships and in ones self as an ends, which is a personality desire. "Work" in this direction amounts to strengthening as opposed to weakening the force and domination of personality over the living being. Fourth Way work weakens the force of personality.

    I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic-on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg-or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronising nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. . . . Now it seems to me obvious that He was neither a lunatic nor a fiend: and consequently, however strange or terrifying or unlikely it may seem, I have to accept the view that He was and is God. (Mere Christianity, 55-56)

    No, the Enneagram is not a religion. The Enneagram is a psychological and research based tool for personal growth. Many people find it so powerful to help them grow personally and improve their relationships that they become passionate about using it. It also is a good tool for spiritual growth as it shows how each of us gets in our own way psychologically and as such don't experience the higher essence expression of our true nature.
