Beatrice Chestnut - Type 8 Enneagram Panel

Type 8 Panel on day one of the Enneagram Panel Workshop Series (Types 8,9 & 1) with Beatrice Chestnut and host, Michael Lerner
Enneagram is an archetypal depth psychology. It has enormous power to deepen our insight into ourselves and others. As a follow-up to our last TNS conversation with author and enneagram expert Beatrice Chestnut, we’re offering a three-part series of workshops to explore enneagram further in depth. Each workshop will feature a three- to five-person panel of enneagram “types”.

I’ve met several 8’s all my life but was never particularly ‘intimidated’ by them. Turns out I’m a chill, levelheaded, undercover 8 myself (Specifically a ENFJ SP 8w9). I could always see the PERSON in them, feel them, and understand them. I don’t see “blunt” I see honesty and “telling it like it is”. I identify with them, even though I can’t relate to the other subtypes.

I am just realizing that could be my case. As an INTJ I have always been around ESFP´s and many of them are 8´s, so obviously I see their version of 8 as way more physically blunt, so I kept looking into other enneagram numbers. However the amount of times I´ve been called intimidating is really annoying and worth considering. I see myself as calm and collected, but that´s not how I´m being perceived.

I'm a 4, married to an 8, and it breaks my heart to hear them talk about the rejection aspect of being an 8. I get it, because my partner is so strong sometimes that people never give him a chance to show his soft side. He's just tough because he wants to protect others. "Teddy bear in combat boots" made me laugh because it is so him.

I'm pretty sure I'm a six. It's interesting to hear eights talk like this. I've misunderstood eights for my entire life until finding the enneagram. I was bullied a lot in school as a kid so I'm always suspicious around people who possess the kind of physical power that eights do. I can feel it immediately. Utterly unmistakable. I didn't realize they had such soft cores. It's making my previous relations with them make so much sense. I'm like, "why do these people always have such energetic animals." They have an enormous amount of love to give. Oh, and I'm pretty sure high school bullies are counter-phobic sixes. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if eights bully bullies.

As an 8w7 sp, I do agree with the stance of bullying the bully. I hate bullies. I was always the first to bat for my friends and family whenever I get the sense they're being picked on. I personally view those overt playground school bully types as weak because I can usually smell the weakness in their body language. My rule of thumb: if anyone seems like they're overcompensating for something, chances are they are hiding a vulnerability. As an 8, I only speak for myself but when it comes to my gut instinct about people's specific vulnerability, I'm usually right on the dot when I say or do something that presses in on it.

I'm sure there are a fair amount of counter sixes being bullies along with unhealthy eights. I believe myself to be a counter six and if healthy, they might also be the ones to stand up and place themselves between the bully and the bullied. Sixes are about courage, and knowing myself - if the right situation arise - I will face the devil so that others don't have to. It's what I've prepared myself for a million times over in my head anyway. There's also a sense that the tendency of backing down for a counter six is not as much because they don't mean it, but because they feel that devil inside themselves suddenly knocking heavily on the door. We will try to convey that through our energy but actually most energy is used to preventing it from having its way. A counter six might show you a glimpse of "what could be" and they prey to the heavens they won't ever have to be responsible for releasing it. If a counter six ever release this devil, or what they percieve to be it, they will surely run from the "crime scene" in fear of it.

I'm a 1, and my son is an 8, and I noticed he someone's starts sparring with me vocally, and I know he's got a smile in his face, because he's riling me up just for fun. My instinct says that he's doing it for fun. He picks subjects he knows that are close to my heart, and that I want to perfect, and criticizes or something, to make me upset, and having to defend my position, why it's important to me. He wants to convince me that I care to much that something that isn't... Ugh... Otherwise we love each other and he's wonderful. I always made sure he understood I'm not trying to control him, and I think once he got older and understood it, our relationship flourished so much more. Thank you...Connie, is it?...for your honest comment about how hard it can be knowing you're constantly, as you put it, "an acquired taste" for people. Because that's so true. We can be as big-hearted as we are big-energy, and yet it's so often the case that we're "too much," even for the people who care about us. And it seems like we are also often the ones asked to be less of who we are in order to make everyone else comfortable. Not that making some concessions for mutual benefit is *bad*, but I think people often don't realize how often it's a one-way street.

Even when I try to tone myself down, I still get the vibe that I'm too much for people, and that people just aren't willing to take it. Just want to add that being an 8 isnt only about "always getting your way" or physical strength like stopping a moving car. It's also not about always being right, that's absurd. 8s have a very focused energy output, it's more intense like a laser instead of flood lights that spill everywhere. Being an 8 is about being driven to seek leverage in situations that allows the 8 to have an impact in their environment or relationships, etc. They also value innocence, and have a strong fairness or justice streak, and often have a soft spot for the underdog.

Our strength is knowing that we are right. Our weakness is also knowing that we are right. Reminding myself of this is very helpful to me. I think having a strong connection with spirit is also very helpful for me. Not only do I not like being controlled, it is a physical impossibility for anyone to control me. I’m a natural rebel & I question everything. I hate unrighteous war. It pisses me off. This is one thing I tend to be obnoxious about and anger others to the point of confrontation. But, since my cause is just, their feelings are totally irrelevant and I destroy them with knowledge until I am satisfied that they will never again be able to muster an attack against me. If they apologize and admit their wrong, my anger with them is transformed into love and I will begin to fight for them. I excel working with one other person or in small groups. I shutdown in large group settings unless I’m the chief. I won’t be just another Indian. It is better to kick me out of the group before I steal the two smartest people & start my own group. I’m definitely an introvert, but I have the ability to be a social chameleon if I feel like it. It’s tough to drag me to an event, but if you get me there I’m usually the life of the party. I don’t like the limelight. I don’t like having people’s attention centered on me, I would rather work in the shadows, but I understand it is necessary from time to time to bring shadow work into the light.

I feel like 8s are the easiest to demonize and misunderstand. In my family system I was the scapegoat because I also am impossible to control... No bueno for narcissistic people. If I start to pick up on someone trying to control me, I find it quite entertaining to flip the script while pretending to be oblivious. Even if I would not have minded going along with their idea originally, once a person resorts to method of fear to get what they want I will lean into the exact opposite of what they want until they explode and make themselves look horrible. 🤷‍♀️ Not that I care, I don’t respect people who control others, because I put the majority of my energy into self mastery (e.g. if I think something is unwanted in my external environment it is a reflection of something that is wanted within, so it’s more direct to just go towards what is wanted than fight against what is unwanted most of the time). The exception to this is abuse of the weak, as an abuse victim myself I can’t stand that shit and will ruin whoever tries to harm someone else either through social humiliation (that they induce upon themselves) or through being completely shut out of my life. It takes a lot to bring me to that point but I have no problem setting my emotions aside to send the message to disrespectful, dangerous, or devious people who abuse the power they have. I’ve never heard of the other aspects (social, self preservation, etc). To me, I recognize that emotional vulnerability is actually the greatest strength - whereas most people have the mindset that “if people know my weaknesses they will use them against me, therefore I will hide my weaknesses”. Instead, I have the mindset “I will be as upfront about my weaknesses as possible, so that if a person uses that against me I know they’re not someone I want in my life sooner rather than later.”

The two women in the middle are definite eights. Solid as a rock, confident. You can tell they don't give a crap. The woman on the right is a counter phobic 6. Or the Enneagram is invalid pseudoscience. In 2001, Dutch professor emeritus of psychology Dr. Wim Hofstee (globally recognized expert in personality theory) sounded the alarm: “The Enneagram is no serious scientific model. It belongs to the confusing and rapidly changing field of lay-psychology: it seems to be a flourishing trade. A psychologist who is a member of the Dutch Institute of Psychologists who works with the Enneagram, risks getting a complaint based on Article III.3 of the professional Code of Ethics, which is about expertise. For non-psychologists such restrictions of course do not apply. But as the Enneagram industry is making statements about our personality - which is subject to scientific research and a profession - we must call a spade a spade: it is simply nonsense.”

The issue I have with this type as a manager is that they think that bc they have other people's best interest in mind that gives them free reign to dictate the direction and even opportunities their employees get...they're so focused on their own thinking, they don't take into consideration the fact that people have their own goals in life..and that they don't need you to make life decisions for them. Guess it's that possessive quality they have..makes them think they have full access to your life including deciding outcomes without your consent. I appreciate what they bring to the world but they're definitely an acquired taste. And I agree with the comments about the 2 middle being definite 8s. I feel bad for countries that are lead by 8's...I think they're gr8 middle managers but would not put them at the top top..danger, danger...that short burst of anger can get your head cut off and a moment later when they come out of it, you're already dead.
