It's eerie how correct this all is. I've never understood why on the one hand I'm this hedonistic pleasure seeking person, and on the other hand I dive extremely deep into a topic, and become an expert in it. Both of these seemed so far apart to me. And then this video just NAILS it. Really got the shivers from that.

My husband is a 7 and I am a 1. On our honeymoon he suddenly became serious and had a weird personality change and I was asking myself - who did I marry? It turned out he was stressed about making our flight, and over the years when this personality change would happen we called it his "Business Mode" and I learned not to take it personally. I never realized until now that he was turning into a 1 - Mr. Get-It-Done without lightness and joy. My mind is kind of blown.

Yes, as a Seven I can attest this is not a healthy way to deal with stress. The disintegration to One is complex and layered (IMO). We think being “serious” and in “business mode” is the best way to be, but that is the One talking.

I just re-read the Hudson Riso book they summarize it as, the unhealthy Seven knows they need to be more focused and disciplined but their motivation is wrong. Their motivation is the "shoulds" of the One.

I love your videos so much! I am in an addict in recovery. Studying the enneagram has given me such a great place to work from therapy wise. And yes!! I am also a 7 and proud of it. The fact I’m a 7 explains so much. So many things that my mother, the 2 in my life, has told me many times that she just doesn’t understand about me. Going on 3 years clean! Bumps on the road here and there but working everyday and your videos have become a huge part of that for me. We are actually doing an enneagram/trama class as part of my iop program and it is amazing! Keep sharing and thank you so much you are changing lives…

Thanks Dr Tom. I’m a 7w6 who sometimes wonders where my joy has gone. I am learning to sit in silence and confront and sit in uncomfortable emotions. This has helped me see the joy I bring and not let it be self serving. I find that a bit of stress to bring productivity helpful. It frustrates my 1 wife to no end that I can get so much done with such little effort when I am motivated and focused.

This was awesome. I've always crapped on enneagrams but I heard a brief description of a 7 that sounded arrestingly like me. This expanded version sounds exactly like who I am when I'm healthy, and where I go when I'm not. I love the call to action to stay present as well, because I'm unusually future oriented, like it seems most 7s are, and need that constant reminder.

This is perfect. You’re descriptions blow my mind! My daughter to a T! Puts it all off, but gets it done! I’m a neat freak and will be like “clean your room! Why can’t you just keep it up and then it won’t be a problem!” She’s like idc! And I need to be “in the mood” 🙄 but once she gets in the mood which is usually only because she’s having someone over, she is very quick and always astonishes me w how she does get all the things done by the skin of her teeth! She’s far from a perfectionist, good enough has always been good enough for her! Always looks for the next adventure. As the adventure is happening she’s planning the next one! Very charming, almost everyone likes her. She’s never down for long. As a 4 mom she hates how deep I wanna go w stuff. It irritates her so much!

More introverted, turned inward and enjoying life every day, bringing you to my journey and wanting less, really think less is more. Does that means i am becoming a healthy 7? This is amazing, i appreciated your video!!!

I just took 4 enneagram tests, with all different results. However I got 7 2x, and 8, 9 and 2 as wings or influences as the repeating numbers. Your description was interesting - I am definitely a 7 who goes into 1 to fix things, but I live in 5.... My 20s were very hedonistic and irresponsible and I was a bouncing ball of light and energy. However I have never been shallow - I LIVE for deeply understanding the world around me and practicing patience. Yes, part chaos and joy fairy, part military general, and also part therapist /researcher/ introverted intellectual. My brain loves to go so fast it has scared me into vices, and I have always been envious of the laid back people who it's easy to be around.... Because I am not them. Even my procrastination is intense.... Uf. I must figure out which wing I have.

Ohhh I see why im 7 now. I never really related to the loud energetic version of 7s and I thought i was 4 for a long time with a 3 wing because I always felt like something is "missing" like I need more and more but it didn't stem mainly from envy like a 4, but more of gluttony like you mentioned. I also do my best to ignore my negative feelings and I'm terrified of being vulnerable with people and just going below the surface. I can't believe I watched the entire video in one sitting, this was really helpful thanks!

I am a pure pleasure seeker, but also can cause destruction with this for e.g. binge eating / over spending etc. I am a really restless person and i feel impatient and youre so right about i can bring either the whole joy to the room or take the whole joy away. I don't allow the latter because i just isolate myself entirely until those moods have passed. I have bipolar and so much of this resonates with my illness too. wild times

(7/8 when I'm alone, 7/6 in groups of people) I find that whenever I intentionally activate 5 strategy in times of stress (instead of defaulting to 1 subconsciously) I feel that snide stuff show up where I'm looking down my nose at everything. I end up climbing into that observer perch and then using it to indulge my artificial self-soothing of pretending I already know everything without really testing that. The reason that impulsiveness doesn't really bite me in the butt hard enough to make me not do it is that I can pretty much solve all the problems it creates without too much effort. Even though the 1 arrow is pretty judgmental it is also very ethical and THAT is what makes me curtail the impulsiveness because the 1 will not let me lie or wriggle out of anything. Been studying the enneagram for over 20 years and I have concluded, much like Riso and Hudson, that the wings and arrows are less descriptive of decompensation and integration than just another set of options for volitional strategy borrowing. Being in 1 is hard and yes, I do go to rigidity when my fears overwhelm me, but there are strengths in that place that I can lean into and use positively. Same for 5. It's a great place but I can fall for its downside if I'm not paying attention. Mindful awareness of our grooves allows us to CHOOSE different behaviors and as I age and ACTIVATE strategies from different types, the personality becomes less and less tight as a suit and I can take better advantage of different ways of thinking and acting in different situations.

I’m a 6 with a 7 partner, trying to learn more about the 7 so I can better communicate and care for him. This was awesome, thank you. It’s easy for me to focus on the negative qualities I might bring to him, but I like that you emphasized the dynamic between the 6 and 7 that could be an awesome partnership when healthy.

some of the hardest things as a 7 myself is getting past that surface level- he was really spot on about that "I know a little about a lot- but not a lot about a little" idea. if you can help guide your partner towards getting past that surface level I bet it would help

Now I'm wondering about stress and growth paths going far enough to cover 4 types, rather than just 3! I've definitely embodied both the 7 and the 5 since dim dark youth, at one time or another. Reluctant responsibility backstop 1 at the very bottom, 8 marshalling the energies to enact (impose?) my thoughts at the top. I suspect there might be something about high/low energy cycles and being a massive ambivert, that just slides up and down that 7-5 line all the time.

What a powerful message, I too am 7 with a 6 wing. I wanted to ask, I find myself swinging between a bad 1 and a healthy 5 within a matter of days. Is that normal? Of course when I “one” to execute tasks I am well aware of it but I’m not sure if it’s healthy to lean into that energy?

Awesome insight! Thank you! I am in a relationship with a 7w6 (I’m a 4w3) and I have been struggling with him being afraid of my emotional intensity (as if being emotional meant not being grounded) and also a tendency to be rigid in his thoughts, all that with rejection the word “fear” of which he is afraid of. I see a lot of anxiety beneath all this and it is hard to have it put on the table and talk to him about being more flexible and more grounded himself through his emotions he is fleeing from. Any advise? Thx!!

So when I read, research, watch videos, and plan for my upcoming trip to Italy I am leaning into my healthy five-ness? Unlike when I went to Spain, hadn’t done a bit of research beyond knowing one museum and one church I wanted to visit, and hadn’t even booked any accommodations until the day before because I couldn’t decide where or how I wanted to break up the 12 days.
