Engine Running Without Exhaust Manifold - Revving With Flames

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We ran a engine in the shop with no exhaust manifold awhile back, and took the opportunity to film it. Of course my mediocre camera focused like total shit, as usual. This was a old Dodge truck that was in very rough shape overall and suffered from years being driven hard and put away wet.
The noise attracted some attention and you may notice some people seem to think that doing this is a problem. They said the valve seals are damaged if a engine is run with no manifold, which made every tech present roll their eyes. If anyone can explain that to me, I'm all ears.
I've done this a few times before myself on different engines, and have never had a problem with the engine afterwards. Not that I drove them like that or let them warm up. It's always a show like this though.

    Seriously, if this was really bad for the valves there would be a picture of bent or warped valves in every hanes manual and other technical books all over the world. It's been proven this is fine, especially for this short amount of time.

    It doesn't matter what time the manifold is off for, it's perfectly safe, all of the time. It never damages the engine. The only reason we have manifold is for fuel economy and to direct exhaust gases away from the cabin.

There is nothing wrong with this. Back pressure is never desirable. This is the optimal exhaust system... If there were no body panels to burn.

    I only thing that I cant think of for why its bad is maybe when theres no manifold the unburned gases that exit the cylinder suddenly have more oxygen so the burn and make a flame and heat up the valves more then usually, I know how someone is going to say "So what about cars that spit flames to the back" in those situations a similar thing happens, the unburned gases or even just gas mixed with air during a time when there is a spark skip during like rev limiter, all of the gases dont start burning in the cylinder but they start burning when they are exiting the cylinder and touch the hot exhaust and ignites them in the exhaust, so in my theory between the cylinder and exhaust manifold there isnt mostly a lot flames or combustion, I could be wrong 🤷‍♂️

    Heyy regarding the burning valve thing In a HOT engine when the exhaust valve closes it apparently creates a tiny bit of vacuum which would suck cold air at ambient temperature over the hot valves when no headers are on which would in turn stress crack the exhaust valves Now in a cold engine I've done it countless times to see if it runs properly etc with no damage whatsoever.

  • @Fopeano

    @Fopeano

    3 жыл бұрын

    You are right about closing valve creating a turbulence that draws ambient air into the port, which happens regardless of engine temperature. The reason it doesn't matter is because all the solid surfaces are protected by a boundary layer of gasses that is hard to strip away. Inside the average car's cylinder during full throttle combustion, there is a controlled burning of fuel that creates around 1000psi of peak cylinder pressure at a 4000°F or so (aluminum/iron/steel melt at half that temp). The boundary layer of gasses against all solid objects prevents this from becoming a problem. For instance, engine detonation melts pistons or headgaskets because the violence that type of uncontrolled explosion is enough to strip away those boundary layers. When you think of cracking a hot exhaust manifold by spraying it with cold water, the only reason that works is because the heavy liquid easily displaces the much lighter boundary layer of gasses around the part. With that much difference in mass, it doesn't matter that there is no pressure like what detonation needs to accomplish to push the boundary layer of gasses out of the way. I'm open to all scientific criticisms of this comment.

    I'm in the process of replacing my exhaust manifold on my Malibu and this was the first thing I looked up after a curious mind wondered what would happen if you started the engine without an exhaust manifold, apparently, nothing. lol Well, something, but it's not like you'll explode or something. I definitely wouldn't make a trip doing this as you'll probably knock yourself out with the fumes but it's amazing how many people are out there that think cars are this delicate without doing a little research first.

    Another example of that is when I first went to instructor-led transmission classes and the genius old man teaching it just dropped and slammed everything around. Stuff I thought was delicate, he would just throw down on the table like it couldn't be broken, and he was right. If you watch my trans repair videos, I'm being as delicate as possible and still manhandling things much of the time. It's amazing how tough machines that expect to be neglected are.

    fire means unburnt fuel is coming out. One port having much more than any others means there is some kind of misfire going on in that cylinder, that is not a lack of fuel problem. It could be a spark issue if you're lucky, but it could also be low compression because of a problem with that cylinder.

    It's carbon deposits that got knocked loose when the manifold was taken off. It kind of coats the inside of the port/manifold and when the manifold is removed there is a broken/loose edge of carbon that is easily burned off.

    "the heat doesn't flow away from them" dude. This is the cause when there IS back pressure. In the case that the headers are removed as shown in the vid, there is almost NO back pressure causing the exhaust gas to flow freely out of the cylinder. Too much back pressure and backing up exhaust gas will burn the seals and overheat the valves, that aint the case with open headers
