    Considering it's a 27l steel v12 making roughly 600hp, you would probably be better off with a small displacement turbocharged engine if you're going for power-weight.

    In the mid 70s I worked for the MoD in a factory where these engines from RE versions of Centurion tanks were completely refurbished. After rebuild the carbs were set rich. In the test house the engines were statrted and after warm up were put on a set speed at which point the flames from the exhausts reached from the engines up the walls. The 4 carbs were then set by adusting the mixture until the flame length was the correct length, measured by a mark on a stick held by the exhaust. This done the exhaust pipes were connected up, the engines run in and dyno tested. It was a beautiful motor, for the price of a crankshaft you could by a brand new Austin Mini!

    It must have been a fun time tuning in such a beast ! I remember my grandfather talking about WWII when he was a munitions driver/mechanic during the battle of the bulge ,he was so impressed with the RR motors of the time and our caddy motors .it was a time unlike today non politically correct and a sense of patriotism that has gone by the way side now both of us the UK and the USA are feeling the grips of Islam radicals sucking the life out of our countries and don't care about what our forefathers fought for to keep even these asswipes free to speak their minds and say awful things about us as we give them freedom that they have never had in the countries they came from.

Islamists are not a problem, the vast arms industry in the USA and Europe pushes governments to engineer new conflicts and governmets then lie to us.

    +RETSAERETEP Carbs? This runs like a diesel, no carbs.... Notice there's no throttle plates in those large inlets. I do see 2 misfiring cylinders though, maybe bad rings? Also, @Drax, timing is not an issue, there's no ignition system on it.

  • @arriviste2020
    @arriviste202010 жыл бұрын

    The exhaust valves are sodium cooled so the flame doesn't do a lot. However both banks require the fuel mixture to be corrected, normally done by using the flame colour as a guide, hence the benefit of stub exhausts. Cyls furthest from the carb should be dark blue, with light blue cone and streaks of red and set at high idle. Just an observation not criticism:;)

  • @adrienperie6119

    If i was running a mechanics school, THIS is the video i would show to explain people how important it is to have your timing right on any engine. I think the ignition timing is so damn low that there is more combustion happening outside of the engine rather than inside. I mean I'm no expert but no engine that spits flames at idle from every single piston every single time would ever make it into a military design that's dependent on fuel efficiency for range, so don't come and tell me that's normal. You can hear the sound the engine makes is also very typical of late ignition because the gasses exit much faster making that "dry" sound.

    I thought most of the Meteors, and the injected Meteorites were built by Rover, even though they had RR on the rocker boxes. They ran on COMBATGAS of course, which is about as low octane as you can get, in petrol. 80 something octane. Chieftain crews had a jerrican of it for cooking. The same stuff would go in the Cent ARVs. There was a low weight trials vehicle built with an unsupercharged Griffon, which is now in the tank Museum. Went like smoke - built as a reliable 1000hp tug to pull the early Challenger/4030s. Engines came from an MTB brought back from Malta IIRC. That ran on COMBATGAS too! No high octane anywhere near either.

    +Min Es I'd say that the spark plugs are the dirty culprit here.

    +Cameron Jenkins A dirty spark plug wouldn't cause the oil smoke. That cylinder either has a badly worn valve that's leaking oil past the valve seat or blown piston rings. There's so much oil getting into the cylinder that it's fouling the spark plug.

    GGigabiteM I was just paying attention to the misfire, not the oil smoke.

    +Richard Stefanits it could be using coolant. the glycol of coolant leaves a white residue in the exhaust

    +chippyjohn1 According to my understanding coolant normally should never get into the exhaust system in any way, shape or form...
