This video shows a short engine run of a Rolls Royce Meteor tank engine from a WW2 Cromwell tank. The engine is shown here during a display at an open day held at Rangitata Island Aerodrome, in South Canterbury, New Zealand.

    I'm sure it sounds a lot better there, with 12 short open pipes, than it ever did in a tank. But I suppose the tank crews are probably glad of that...

    It seems to start a lot quicker than an aircraft engine. Just turn the key and hit the starter.

    a lot less rotational mass without supercharger, reduction gear and prop attached.

    Yes, you are right about that. But the aircraft version has to get the fuel from the carburettor to the cylinders via the supercharger and a much longer intake track and at cranking speed with the higher power camshaft profiles the fuel has further to travel and less (suction) to make it travel.

    Did u see these blue hoses? Normally they are used for coolant. I bet, they are used here for it too.

    A prop wouldn't do much good on a water cooled Engine as they don't have the surface area to dissipate heat.

    Once, I hit a girl in a bar. She said she only date a guy with Rolls Royce. So on saturday, I came to her house with a Centurion. It's a Rolls Royce powered tank, so it's still counted as Rolls Royce.
