Engine Fire procedures and actions on Boeing 747

Hello! How do you do everyone.
Hope you enjoy this clip from a training session in the B747-8 ‘Superjet’ simulator. Whenever we complete a check ride as we have done today, and we have extra time left in our allotted session, I ask the students if they would like to practice some exercise or procedure. Today, Raymond who had just passed his checkride, asked to practice an engine fire and three engine landing. The B747-8 has 2 fire extinguisher bottles in each wing. One is designated for each engine but in severe fire cases, both fire bottles can be used to fight a fire in an engine. This would mean you would not have an extinguisher available for the other engine on same side if it also caught fire later( you’d be having a bad day).Hence the reason an immediate landing is required. The fire extinguisher bottles on other wing cannot be used for the opposite wing.
The rest of the info is in the labels as the video runs. Oh and by the way, the actions to shutdown the engine on fire and discharge extinguishers must be done from memory. Hope you like it!
‘Chi Di Gin!’- Later!😀✈️

Theres a scene in the 1997 movie Air Force One where engine 4 (yes number 4 just like in this video) gets shot at by enermy fighter Migs, and catches on fire. The co-pilot just switiches the extinguishing bottle BEFORE first lowering the throttle for that engine and cutting the fuel supply.

You are meant to cut off the fuel first. Sometimes cutting off the fuel can extinguish the fire without even using fire extinguisher. Movies used to be unrealistic.

I'd like to see the non-extinguished engine fire sim ran Cap. How could you show that to us and not run it with those two able Lads busting with enthusiasm??

Are there still simulators in the world for older aircraft that require a flight engineer such as the 747-200/300 or DC10?

Thanks for showing us more of the simulator, nobody ever shows the Instructor panel in the simulator. it's those little things which get me curious at least :P I wonder how they look in modern simulators like for the B787, maybe A380 etc.. but fun content nontheless

Save cracks and broken fuel lines, what else could cause an engine fire? If both bottles have been discharged and the fire has not been extinguished, how many minutes do you have at your disposal to get the aircraft on the ground and evacuated? One can safely assume that critical engine fires are not a common occurrence these days?

Very good information. I am a mechanic on the 747-400 and -8. I was wondering if you have taken a Gen Fam course on either of the 747 variants? If not I think you would really enjoy the class. I know I did

The guy running the sim can be very sadistic. I was running 2 engines at 1.30+ EPR, nearly max power, on the ground. Suddenly I jumped chocks. I brought the power back and applied brakes. I had no brakes. Dual brake system fail. Once power was at idle, deploy thrust reversers. Use of the TRs isn't in our checklist as ground maintenance. However, our instructor made sure that we knew how to use everything no matter if we were pilots or maintenance.
