Endangered Wig Wag Railroad Crossings in Action!
On November 25th, 2020, I visited Sheboygan, Wisconsin to witness a train passing through the Saemann Avenue railroad crossing. The crossing is guarded by two 1920s era Wig Wag signals that still operate! I caught train YSB52, a local job, heading north with a CNW caboose as a shoving platform. Sadly, the old Wig Wags may be getting removed sometime in the near future. Hopefully they will be saved by a collector or museum!
Special thanks to Brenton81 for the clips at the beginning of the video!

WOW! I love this wig wags so much! Thank you for this!
Great shot with the C&NW bay window caboose!
Sadly these Wig Wags were removed yesterday. The crossing currently has no form of protection. Crews will have to flag it until crossbucks are put it.

Well that's sad. Hopefully it will be put in a museum somewhere.
Fun video. Sad that these are gone. I remember in the late 1960's when I was just a kid, these were still pretty common.
I live in Wisconsin and I would love to see these wig wags return to their normal places they once stood
I'd ask up to save the two because there rare enough as it is
Sam, great video! I liked the beginning clips. Thank you for documenting these last wig-wag signals in action before they become extinct. I hope that Union Pacific donates these wig-wags to a railroad museum like Illinois Railway Museum or Mid-Continent Railroad Museum.

No offense to the guys at IRM, but they seem to get a ton of stuff donated to them from ALL of the Chicago-land railroads... The National Railroad museum in Green Bay needs some support... They are the Only museum in the US that is considered "National"... like the Smithsonian for trains! I would love to see them get more support from the railroads and railfans alike!

There’s Sheboygan or Cheboygan where I’m from- Michigan
Great video! Those wigwags are cool! Bonus that you caught a caboose!
OMG!! I’ve been into trains since early 80’s and never seen anything like this my whole life!! Awesome!😃
Did you know that wig wag signals were supposed to represent someone swinging a lantern? And modern day crossings instead of swinging back and forth, they flash back and forth to represent that!
That is so cool seeing wigwag signals in action I hope to go up there and get a picture and video of them sometime before they're gone
Donate these wig wags to the National Railroad Museum up north here in Green Bay and all the remaining hardware and the technology and relays of the 1920's and new tech up to the current 2020 era, BUT not until it is Confirmed that they have been in service for a full 100++ years. Our small circular track is called "The Wisconsin and Yesterday RR", that was chosen in a contest in 1960. Plus, it is connected to the Original C&NW RR " Valley Division" South to Appleton that was the first RR to reach GB's West side suburb called Fort Howard, in November 1862 during the Civil War. The Cnw ran until it was sold to FRVR in 1987, then WCL, then CNR in 2003. So Three Cheers for the Wigwags(yay), and Cabooses (yay), and UPRR (yay), for keeping Living History still in operation. From Steven. Happy Thanksgiving 2020, A.D.!!-!

Agreed, Green Bay needs more support... I would like to see the railroads donate some more equipment to them... Union Pacific hasn't given them squat since the 1950's.

so sad to see such a magnificent crossing signal set go
I really like the wig wags as well as the new mechanical signals that are some what common I guess.
Awesome video really hope the wig wag crossing signal's are saved 👍😮😢
Classic signals with a classic caboose! I wonder how many are left up in the Northwoods.
I was born in 1965 these are before me That is Amazing get back to me on this Thankyou
Im suprised some were still in operation. These are my favorite
3:23 Sounds like "All-Star"!
That caboose looks older then Moses.
The camera quality is... nice. It kinda looks like from the 2000s/early 2010s
We have the same name! Also, why do the railroads want to remove the iconic wig wags so badly?
I remember watching videos on these back in 2010-11
Very nice wig wags! I wish more Griswold crossings and Wig Wags were still in use Sad to know UP plan to replace those wig wags

Probably can't get parts for them, and no railroad wants to pay to have someone make parts.
I think it was a dumb decision to replace them with crossbucks
Pretty awesome looking wig wags
Someone should form a petition to keep these beauties here, or at the very least, donate these to a museum.

There are some wigwags just like this one at the Illinois Railway Museum.
This was posted the day after my birthday!
Nice!
According to Google maps, there's a set of Wig Wags at WSOR's Vine Street crossing in Baraboo WI. Does anyone know if those are still there?
This is pretty far out awesome. In all my 56 years, I had never seen anything like this before. Yeah, my first time. I'm from upstate New York, by the way. Never been to Wisconsin before. Such a shame they're going to be doing away with "the last and only one left." I don't understand. Why don't they just leave it there. It still works just all fine and good as new. It's not hurting or harming anyone. It's a part of years and years of railroad history.

The state has removed them after a few near misses over the past couple years. They also were hard to maintain, so they replaced them with crossbucks.

@@SamLovesTrains I like wig wags and railroad crossings. GO ON NEDERLANDS TO HAVE NEW RAILROAD CROSSINGS! Video Inspired by me! (Name of video: Dutch Railroad Crossings In Nederland!) Make sure to make a new intro and outro!!
wish I could go save some of these
Classics
That’s not the last one there’s 2 others that are still in use and I’ve seen them in person
I'm surprised the States or FRA didn't outlaw these kind of signals long ago as not visible enough crossing protection. There are several videos of these still in operation in the last 1-3 years on KZread.

States started prohibiting new wig-wag installations in the 1940's. By about 1950, new installs were outlawed pretty much everywhere. Existing set ups were allowed to remain in place. Any surviving wig-wags are now on low speed / low density lines. Delhi, Colorado is the only exception. It's the last wig-wag in service on a Class 1 mainline in the United States.
These were supposed to be replaced in 2018. I'm really surprised that they have lasted.
There is also still another mainline wigwag still in use to this day (2021) in Delhi, CO. Hopefully it stays up for a while

Unfortunately, that wig-wag was also lost to time this March-it’s moving to a museum.
Oh yes, back when people stopped at RRCs.
These are known as Harpes Style Wig Wags
I think I would accidentally back into it with my truck and take it home
I see why wig wags have to go the people of today are too stupid to know to stop before them and let the train pass
