santa fe wig wag vista
This was taken around Christmas 2003 - on the old Escondido Branch line - prior to the Sprinter passenger train service. Here is the BNSF local heading out to Eccondido from Oceanside crossing what was one of the last remaining grade crossings with a Wig Wag.

How could anyone dislike historicle technology like this?! l grew up near these signals and would run or ride my bicycle as fast as could to watch them swing. To this day wig wag are as exciting to watch as it was in 1960! People need to pay attention to things like this because this is part of what made this country great and free.

Everything about this video is cool: the horn echoing. the fading on and off of the red, wig wag warning light, the screeching of the wheels, the wig wag bell, the night photography... could not ask for more. Thank you for posting this. Too bad it is history.
Santa Fe GP30's were always the best to watch. great work horses.
These RS3L's are amazing sounding! And with Santa Fe GP30! Best catch ever!!!

Holy RS3L! Beauty of a horn and echo. Shame to see the wigwag has been retired! Fantastic video!!
I to remembered this wigwag The only time I saw it in operation was on a rainy day 25ish years ago during the day time.
1:37 it officially starts
I remember this wig wag. Thanks for posting the video. I really never got to see this wig wag operate since I've only gone down this road a few times. It also kindda sucks that the freight trains only come down this line like once a week now. I miss seeing them.
I like this video because of the silence at the beginning, then hearing the approaching train in the distance, and knowing the wigwag will soon come alive. Especially effective at night!

Yeah, now it's those annoying alarm sounding bells on modern crossing signals.
love the sound of those diesels rev- ving up to make the grade and then the wonderful air horns.
I like the darkness the silence and only the sound of the locomotive just before the wig wag signal starts
Cool seeing it spring to life, not many videos that actually show that
Excellent video! Thank you. Funny seeing the light leaking around the lens. If on your right, usually a single signal would be on the other side of the track. If on your left, it would be on your side of the track.
Man, watching this video again takes me back.
Thanks for uploading this video, this is really nostalgic to watch since I've lived in the area since I was little. I never really got to see the Escondido local ran by BNSF. Now since the Pacific Sun took over. Ive gone to the site where this crossing once was (now gated) and it is sad that all these old historic railroad images fading right before our eyes.

This is great love the santa fe style wig wag thanks for uploading
Nice RS3L on the SD40-2! A little Santa Fe never hurt.
@AsianPerson3 I thought so. I haven't got a chance to see em up close.
Too bad this wig-wag retired due to the new commuter trains
Great catch! O Hello ther

Niles Canyon Railway has these on their tracks as crossings.
I wish they had Wig Wags at my home crossing instead of those stupid traffic lights.
Or in vista. This may not be there any longer, the nctd upgraded crossings for the new sprinter commuter trains

Priceless ... Thanks
I know UP does it's the other rr's that don't seem to care. Probably want to replace it anyway. If UP owns this signal maybe they should work on it.
Cool vid, but a 1:35 of darkness? Oh my....
that's too bad....there is no longer any BNSF branch lines in the county. you would think that with the size of San Diego, there would be more freight activity, but there's not....

Jonathan Bolanos it has been gone for years, if you wanted to see it in person, you should have been around when these were common like I was. When I was a kid back in the late 80's and 90's, I used to go and film there at that crossing.

How to describe this video in one word… NOSTALGIA
Sadly signal like don't use it but I Love Wig-wags.
what road is this?
I agree. I guess if it came down to a crossing gate I would rather see that happen. They should install double crossing gates at every rr crossing. Problem is they don't have the finances to do so. This would hopefully prevent accidents like the one this summer with 5 kids dead when the driver went around the gate.
What street in esco is this crossing?
@newdealswing Where did the wig wags sent after they retired? I'm just wondering which place the railroad company sent the old railroad crossing signals like the wig wag.
Man I wish I got to see our local wig wag swing. Its gone now. It was on 49th and Santa Fe Ave
There have been examples of Santa Fe style wigwags have been preserved but not to museums
Is this the Guajome crossing?
The striker in the bells needs adjustment. Too bad the railroads don't take pride in their equipment!
@newdealswing Hey I was wondering if you knew the name of the Rail Road doing the freight runs. I don't think its BNSF.

Another fun fact. Santa Fe engines were also servicing Escondido in late 2021. I have videos of them.
San Diego County, California
A lot of people keep asking why did they get rid of theses crossings in the first place. well, the simple answer is maintenance. You see wigwags Obsolete, they don’t make them anymore ever since they invented the crossing cantilever, which was all alot more reliable due to the flashing lights, a gate arm, and a mechanical bell, which was proven to be a better way of warning when a train was coming. overtime wigwags were starting to become outdated, Railroads began replacing them with newer and safer crossing cantilevers until eventually most of them were gone. There are some wigwags left, but most of them are either abandoned or unused. you can still find wigwags on tourist railroads, but for active railroads is nearly impossible.
Does anyone know if this was a Los Angeles or Minneapolis built one? It looks like Minn but I might be wrong.
I remember watching this in my child hood memories eating Cheetos while watching this 9 years ago
sadly they throw them out sometimes sell as scrap metal
sprinter just had to ruin everything and get rid of this piece of history, and atsf just had to merge with bn and get those damn k5hls to replace the awsomeness of those s3ls. I could go on ranting about how much better the past was but it eont chwnge what is now

The Santa Fe style wigwags were distinctive because they have the characteristic ding dong sound on the gong. Does that wig wag still stand?
