Wig Wag Railroad Crossing in Hawthorne in 4K Resolution
The Hawthorne wigwag is about to die.
It's been this location for more than 60 years and now it's time for the end. 12/15/15 I shot this video with Sony FDR-AX100 in 4K resolution.
The Wig Wag is still there as of 2/20/16.

This wig wag hasn't been serviced in years. The light doesn't work, the bell doesn't work, it needs a serious paint job.... the railroad has essentially abandoned it. One day it will stop swinging, and the railroad will scrap it. What a sad ending for a piece of American railroad history.
6:38 the shadow of the wig wag on the tank car is beautiful!
Thanks for catching the last few days of a class one wig-wag still in use...sad to seem them go... Hopefully the mechanism and banner won't end up in a scrap heap, and it'll be saved by someone.
The last Wig-Wag stop and warning signal for our area, was taken down by Clinchfield Railroad in 1975, in the little town of Coeburn, VA. The tracks have since been torn out of the ties, and removed by railcar, effectively rendering this crossing null and void for future historians of this type warning device. Its good to see some are still in operation.
Snuffy, I don't know how you do it, but Please Know that fans of LA railroading and switching from Far and Wide Thank You for the clips you post! For some of us, we will never get to see these things in person, so your efforts are very Very VERY much appreciated!!!!

They should stop junking all the wig wags, they should keep the wig wag but install new gates beside it.

Great video. Thanks for posting it. I used to see these Magnetic Signal Company wigwags in suburban Adelaide, Australia, in the mid 50s. Theirs looked better, because the just had white paint surrounding the red light. The reason that they had them was because, at one time, the South Australian Railways was headed up by an American called Webb. As a result, there were these wigwags, steam locos with American roaring whistles, and clerestory topped carriages. I miss all that. The wigwags were replaced by boring double light warnings, which did NOT prevent nasty accidents - so that gets rid of that old argument. The steam trains lasted until about 1964 on peak hour suburban runs. That loco in your video, as with many in the States, is damn loud. Far too many toots on the horn. Tell the drivers: "Ok, ok, we get the idea." A couple of toots would suffice. I'm glad I don't live near a North American rail line.

Actually, the FRA will come and probably sue any RR out of existence if they didn't do a crossing sequence at a non QZed crossing. That's why there's so much horn.
