I’m glad that she admits that she’s white, but I do want to take note that a lot of white passing Latinos don’t want to admit their privilege, that a brown skinned Latina would be more likely to be racially profiled, and of course get racism. Of course white passing Latinos got their problems for example not much ppl recognizing them as Latino, etc. I can’t really speak on that cause I don’t experience that. But each one is valid but recognize the privilege is what I’m tryna say, we are all Latinos but we have different experiences.

How would Emily have felt if her grandmother rejected her? Her Mom knew how her mother felt about these things and was only trying to protect Emily. If Emily feels that her grandmother already knew then Emily should take comfort in that thought. If my grandson would come out, I would love him the same however I would make it clear that I do not condone homosexuality. Please do not tell me about it in my final years though.

It’s giving erasure and whitewashing towards/of Latino culture. I’m proud of my african and indigenous roots and I find it disrespectful that, people who are uneducated of our very complex history w/ our culture/roots/race/ethnicity, try to erase centuries of work put in to rebuilding/combining the cultures/languages that were so close to being erased from our ancestors. ✊🏿✊🏾. Latino need to stop denying their multiracial roots and learn to accept and embrace them. Just because u don’t get discriminated against doesn’t mean ur automatically white, it just means u have light-skin privilege, which means u have it easier compared to darker-skinned Latinos, but that doesn’t apply to everyone thou, there are plenty of latinos who are light-skinned, and still get discriminated against. Let’s not forget bout the Walmart massacre in El Paso, that targeted Hispanics/Latinos, the man responsible for the crime didn’t care if u were a light-skin, brown-skin or dark-skin, his plan was to kill as many of “US” as possible. It’s clear and set in stone that “America” doesn’t see us as white, why? Cos we simply aren’t, we might be mixed w/ it but we also have are other roots. Yes there are Latinos who physically might appear more as one race then another, but that won’t erase the fact that we are mixed Generationally through centuries of mixing with the Spanish/Arabs/Portuguese/French/British/Africans/Natives/Indians, that at this point it just becomes seamless.

Her word choice or better yet, her word play is confusing to people and I think to her also. She is not a WHITE woman( as in white caucasian) but a LIGHT hispanic woman. White and light can look similar, but they are different. White is what we all know it is -WHITE. And light is what she is -LIGHT. I am bothereed by the word play.

But this is why we have the word "brown" for the nuances a blanket term for all poc who dont fit the descriptive of black or white.
