Most people already knew her daughter was gay before Gloria figured it out. It's ironic because Gloria has a large gay following. Gloria had that popular music video "Everlasting Love" with drag queens on MTV in the 90's. That video was considered groundbreaking at the time. That video is not a big deal nowadays.

Gloria is from another generation we also have to understand that. Our parents DO NOT think like us in so many ways. We have to be patient but the best way to convince them of who we are or who we want to be is to be persistent and consistent with our life style, with whatever it is that we want to accomplish.

For example, take something taboo today and try convincing the majority that it should be accepted - Being attracted to children or your family for example. The current generation already has what they are willing to accept and what they won't but 40 years down the line? Who knows what will become accepted. That is up for tomorrows generation to decide.

Not only is Gloria a boomer...she is also Latin, and more specifically Cuban from Miami...meaning, she was raised very, very conservative. Same experience with my mom as Emily. I think it just comes down o assumption and bias where parents believe that there kids are not "normal" and need to be "fixed" and also believing seeing them as primarily as gay instead of as there child. I also think its common for parents to assume that they did something wrong instead of seeing it as a natural thing, where some people are and others are not and even more falling in between. Also from experience I think if people do not know or have not had any prior interactions with people of different sexualities or race they tend to see them as a stereotype until and IF they interact with more than one person from the community. Thiis is why I think people from smaller towns tend to assume some things about gay people while people in the city probably see them more as individuals since its more likly hey have interacted with these individuals on a daily basis. From personal experience my mom has a hard time accepting me, but my dad didnt care about my sexuality (he didn't see it as less than or more than it just was what it was). Later I found out one of my uncles from my dads side was gay while there was no one from my moms side, I think growing up with him he saw him early on as his brother who was an individual first rather than as a gay person. These are jsut thoughts.

I put myself in Gloria's shoes as a mom. It's very painful to have a daughter and have all these dreams of how her life will look like and honestly I'm open, but this whole gay agenda being pushed (because it is being pushed) I just don't want my child "experimenting" but of she comes out gay Ill accept it. If she starts blurring lines though sleeping with whomever and whatever under the guise of "love is love" no. Anything doesn't go for me. There has to be a moral compass in everyone.

If you're a parent from the x and even y generation, having a son or daughter who turned gay is usually considered a shame on the whole family. The mentality of that time dictated that sexual preferences should be kinda private, not the freak show that has become nowadays, with Facebook, a special Coming Out Day, etc. Estefan is dismayed by her daughter's life choices and her grandmother would have certainly felt the emmotional stress of revealing such a decision which could be dangerous for an old person. IMO Gloria Estefan did the best for her family by quashing the self gratifying announcement of a glorified lesbian thus minimizing the risk of more drama. It was the decision even a person who had a spherectomy procedure performed on him/herself would have made.

I came out to the rest of my family and friends in Oct 2021 via Facebook post. I'm 56 yrs old. I was in the Navy for 20 yrs and retired in 2005. I was in the Navy when you could not be out and open. I knew there was something different about me, but I wasn't in a position to explore or do deep soul searching of my sexuality. I have a 28 yr old son. Now I am PROUD of who I am. Last May I met a wonderful woman who is now my fiancee and I will be a stepmom to a 6 yr old daughter. We are an age gap couple, she is 39. I am happier now since coming out as a lesbian, than I was before trying to be straight.🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈

I’m a huge fan of Gloria Estefan but I truly believe she doesn’t accept her daughter for who she is. Her generation is the last of traditional Latinos who believe their children should be straight, get married, have kids, and continue “that” legacy. Gloria’s son did that but not her “miracle child.” Gloria has seen Emily as the “miracle child” as her doctors told her she would never be able to have a kid again after her near-fatal bus accident in 1990. I’m sure Gloria had the dream of all mothers do of their daughters. I’m asexual and my Dominican parents and my 87-year-old Dominican grandmother don’t accept me for being who I am. I don’t blame them - it’s the engrained roots of Latin cultures who see that their children should only be straight. Fortunately, my generation as well as today’s generation are more open-minded but we honestly can’t blame older generations for what they were simply taught growing up. My blessing to Gloria, Emily, and the entire Estefan family. 🙏🏽
