Emergency back surgery leads to over $650,000 in bills

Frank Esposito, a tool and die maker from Long Island, N.Y., drained thousands of dollars from his retirement account and still owes over $220,000. Complicated and confusing medical bills are a problem for millions of Americans, so CBS News is collaborating with ClearHealthCosts, a journalism company focused on bringing more transparency to the process. "CBS This Morning" national consumer investigative correspondent Anna Werner reports in our new series, "Medical Price Roulette."

If free healthcare is “socialist,” then meet me in the middle and commit to fixing healthcare costs. Commit to holding insurance companies accountable. Why do insurance companies make the final determination of what’s “medically necessary?” They’re not doctors. Make insurance companies do their jobs and pay for service. Lower drug costs by criminalizing price gouging. There are other ways to lower the cost of care than to just make it free but it seems any solution other than doing nothing is “socialist,” and rejected immediately. Actually look at the issue instead of the party it’s attached to before you make your judgment.

Medicare for all that's free at the point of service is *not* socialism. And I'm a socialist. You must ask yourself would you rather pay hundreds a month for private health insurance aka a private *tax* (I know scary socialist word) only to be partially covered? OR would you rather pay significantly less money through your federal taxes and be fully covered? Do away with private health insurance. They're an unnecessary middleman who's only purpose is to squeeze as much money from the patient while giving the least amount of care possible. That's the profit motive. As americans let's join the rest of the civilized world that has some type of universal coverage. America can do better than overpriced private taxes.

I had the same thing back in August 2019. I had mitral valve replaced as well. It's been 7 months since my surgery. I had good insurance but when I saw the bill for the surgery it was about $218.000 I had some complications before the surgery so I had to stay in the hospital for almost a month. Then got rush back to the hospital after being discharged then stayed for an extra week at the hospital for pancreatitis the bill was $17,000. I had to pay close to $2,000 ou of pocket since my insurance did not cover some things. Iam 34 years old. The doctor could not tell how did I contract the bacteria they think i got it from being at the dentist. I hope you are doing better. As for myself iam ok but still some pain where they open my chest. It was a horrible experience. That was the first time in my life I have been hospitalized or being that sick.

@@tvojslauf It's primarily about insurance companies. Healthcare in our country is profit driven. The free market isn't the correct mechanism for every facet of our lives. Insurance companies represent an inefficiency. They take profits and provide nothing in return. They DO NOT provide healthcare so every penny they earn simply represents money lost from the system. Unfortunately most so called "conservatives" have been brainwashed into thinking that they would lose out if this system were changed. Unfortunately the insurance companies have also invested heavily in our government and, through lobbying, have built in support and defense in the highest levels of our government.

  • @tvojslauf

sandman1347 that seems to be a common misconception that insurance companies are the primary problem with healthcare in America. Why don’t we have the same problems with auto insurance, homeowners insurance, business insurance etc? To think that doctors haven’t invested heavily in lobbyists and aren’t part of the problem is very naive and dare I say somewhat brainwashed thinking. There’s documentaries about Canadian or British doctors being content with a couple or few hundred $K a year while American doctors want millions. Think of how big of fools we are donating to the likes of the Cleveland Clinic, Susan B. Komen ($60 million a year!) walk for this, raise awareness for that, coin jars for sick people at every retail location etc. I’m just suggesting that maybe if hospitals and doctors charged less the insurance companies wouldn’t fight payments so much. Yes the insurance companies are crooked but so are the doctors, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. They’re all complicit in the problem.
