“It’s about how I felt when I was trying to get signed, I was going for all these meetings and people were looking at me like ‘What do we do with you’? It's about not allowing yourself to be judged by others or to be taken for an idiot. I feel the video reflects that” Emeli Sande 2012.
Directed by Wiz (Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys) the video is about making a stand, believing in yourself and not allowing yourself to be judged.

I just watched a young lady from London sing this song on American Idol. This is my first time hearing this song in 2024 and both these ladies blew the heck outta this song. My new favorite song for life now. ❤ I'm the oldest sibling and I'm a Gemini as well as hold my family together and many other people in the World! Just hugged my heart this song did.

Well I dont know first time I listened to it I got a whole different feel about how you are lonely in the world the song really spoke to me but since the video showcases oppression and belittling a woman so she would listen to you it gives a whole different feel it goes to show how lyrics can really be about anything

The lyrics hit me so hard cos I interpreted it differently. I'm always the one trying to make everyone laugh, be it with my family, my friends, my boyfriend. I never allow them to see me break down and cry. I couldn't, even if I wanted to. I tried before to cry in front of them, it just won't come out. So I swallowed it all in, continue to make them laugh, continue to take care of them while I put on my brave facade, I put on my makeup so that they won't see my pain. I suffered from severed depression and was suicidal several times, yet my dad has no idea. I care for my loved ones too much to let them see what I'm going through.

hazwanee25 you seem to be very strong, just remember that you don’t have to be so strong all the time, let go some time and say aloud how you feel, when someone’s listening to our worries we feel a bit better, and even if it will not work every time, you should keep on doing it, because you can’t stay in the dark alone, it’s not good. Stay strong and talk to your relatives, feel free to cry or feel any kind of feelings you are experiencing 💕

I can relate to everything you wrote 😥 I've always been a clown for the others, to always make sure they're ok, taking care of and happy. I've always put myself last and that brought me so much misery, depression, anxiety, panic attacks... This year has been my first year, to take care of myself for once and I am doing so much better. Wishing you all the best!

@@jsuis.hxollz thank you for your kind words 💕 it's hard to change a habit that I've lived with for so many years but I am working on it, focusing on myself first, bit by bit. Just that when I heard the lyrics I bawled out right, going through all those am I not worthy to be loved etc but somehow the lyrics also made me stronger, in a way. I'm at a place where I feel okay to say no to my loved ones, which is still very much difficult for me to do. Thank you so much for dropping a reply, I hope that you too a blessed with happiness and joy in all that you do *HUGS*

Check out some of the stuff she's written for other people, and you'll know what I'm talking about. I know you're referencing the theme of the video, but don't worry about Ms Sande. To me this seems like the meaning is to the music industry, buying artists souls and then working them hard. Until they deny it and then take all the privileges away. When she signs it's like her souls been sold and that all they care about is the money and her selling out shows. The music industry can be a dark place but artists like her are able to show us what it's like. Peace and love to everyone, never let anyone buy your soul. ❤️❤️

They have families, children and entire bunch of other people who work FOR them who depend on the artist making money. Would you work for free and if you gain success would you piss on it? Surviving on pride won't pay your mortgage. Take your success where ever you get it, do no harm, give something back and live your life.

I didn't ask nor do I care how you define success, neither does this artist (or sell out as you call her). The point I was making is that she does what she does to get what she needs. You do the same. This is pointless you think you know me and I already know I don't know you. We can't persuade each other, because we can't even disagree politely. This is pointless, good luck to you.

Emeli Sande is an amazing singer and the first time I heard this song, I thought to myself "this is an absolutely beautiful songstress singing an amazing song" and I have loved it ever since. I saw her in concert back in 2015 and she sang this along with a list of her other big hits and the crowd was singing along with her throughout it. The room was filled with so much emotion and concentrated so much on her performance during it that it seem like there was total silence in a stadium filled with over 5000 people and when it ended she was crying on stage and got a standing ovation for it.

The meaning of this song can be attributed to the "Song Contest" shows. Simply because they make aspiring singers sign contracts and force them to sing songs that the singer doesn't want to sing. An example is Zoe Alaxander, she was told by the producers to sing a P!nk song, but she didn't want to sing a P!nk song, then the judges asked her to sing a different song, and the backstage team made the song sound off key, which made her sing it off key too. She was mad about it, she got angry and shouted at the judges for making her sing a song she didn't want to and the second song purposely sound off key. The judges pretended they didn't make her sing anything, eventhough they clearly knew about it. She became a laughing stock because of it, when in reality, if a lot of people were in that position, you'd be angry to find out that your sole purpose was just for a little drama, than actually be appreciated for your talent.

really is sad. these ppl, great talents, are there for our entertainment and ultimately our disposal. Maybe if these great talents could've recognised that they were great without the approval and desire of the ppl, they could've survived. We seek so much external approval. Life i guess

I’ve been thinking about what this song actually means, it’s a hard one because it embodies so many emotions, but the one thing they all have in common is the feeling of failing but having to move forward with the course of life. It’s sad but also so beautiful because people are complicated, we never know why someone behaves the way they do and ultimately we’re all fighting a battle to make something of ourselves, even when we don’t like the choices we make, even with all life’s twists and turns. Just beautiful!

She said what it means. It was about her trying to get into music and get signed. She said it was about people taking her for a fool and judging her. It's telling people not to be a clown for people, be yourself, even if they don't like it. Don't be a sell out because others want you to be because it will benefit them.

Wow - that was so powerful - you could see the pressure she was under to sell her soul but the pen is mightier than the sword. She knows what she is singing about in this video and you can hear it her beautiful voice. "Success is impatient" that really struck a chord for me. Im stunned. Dont be a clown for anyone elses amusement unless that is your hearts desire of course.

For me this song represents someone who has trusted a person they loved before and had their heart broken and then met someone else fallen in love, told themselves not to trust them but trusted them anyway and then had their heart broken again and now just accepts this their life. They are the clown who everyone else just uses for their own entertainment.

These lyrics seem to describe the feelings of someone who feels like a clown or entertainer in their own life. They feel like they are constantly trying to make others laugh and entertain them, even though they may be feeling desperate and unhappy themselves. The lyrics also touch on themes of feeling overlooked and misunderstood, as well as the desire for success and recognition. Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of frustration and the longing for a different, more fulfilling life.

I just made friend this year, in my tenth grade year. I used to be bullied all the time. This song makes my heart soar, to think others share the same pain, and that we can all relate to each other, and support each other, either it be via person, love, or music. Thank you, so much for singing this song Emeli.
