My wife and I were at this concert, and Elvis seemed in good spirits, did not slur words and what we saw "we expected" You are correct there was no social media, but our "print media" did tell, and show us, what Elvis looked like. The fact that this was 50 years ago does not mean we all lived under rocks and did not keep up with all news-not just Elvis.... but topics of the day. Magazines like Photoplay, National Enquirer, Movieland, Rolling Stone, etc all kept us up to date on what Elvis looked like and how his openings in Vegas and his tours were going. You could not stand in a supermarket line and not see (even if you did not buy the mags) recent photos of Elvis and everyone else popular.Rona Barrett was a Hollywood reporter and she had a syndicated 5 minute "Hollywood news report" that was in most major tv markets ...it was on KTVI in St Louis. She could be hard on Elvis and pointed out his weights ups and downs...so your assumption that we had no clue about his weight gains and slower performances was incorrect. We all knew Elvis had gained weight after 73.... photos abounded to show us this fact. We all knew he was not the Elvis of 69-72, he had been in and out of the hospital, we knew he had health problems (especially the congenital ganglionic fold in his colon, referred to commonly as a twisted colon) we knew about his eye problem. We had an evangelist come to our church who was good friends with JD Sumner and he told us in his week of revival services that JD had told him Elvis was torn between wanting to do more for God and less touring....but Elvis knew many peoples livelihood depended on Elvis and his tours and recordings. I digress. But as far as that show I would rank it a good show, early on he was attacked on stage during "You Gave Me a Mountain"....blindsided from behind by a woman and you could hear the mike hit his teeth in a loud "clack" It did throw him off balance for a second and "it may have thrown off his entire show" At one point he asked with a smile: "Whats wrong with you people" because the crowd was pretty rowdy. He reportedly told Ron Tutt and John Wilkenson "Thats the last time I play here" His voice seemed to be phoning it in on the old hits-but some songs like "Hurt", "America the Beautiful" "Steamroller Blues" he fired up his delivery with emotion and power.

That's fascinating first hand information. Thank you for a balanced view of it. Though sometimes it's hard to watch his later performances if he seems to be struggling, he also captivates you and you can't help but watch him. It may seem strange but the more I learn of his struggles as a human, the more I respect him for his accomplishments. Does that make any sense?

Aww, poor Elvis 🥺 he didn't seem well at all in that clip. I love that song too! Can you imagine having to keep entertaining people non stop and those gruelling tours, a ruthless manager on your back and a team of people who depend on you for their wages. That would break anyone. I agree he needed a long rest, then a big comeback. It's kind of a Catch-22, because we are grateful for all the footage too. Can't get enough of Elvis 😌👑

I have one more story about this March 22 1976 show. My wife and her friend were waiting in a line the ladies rest room when the opening strains of "2001" started and nearly all the women rushed out including my wife and our friend. My wife was not a big Elvis fan, she loved the Moody Blues and Cat Stevens-but Elvis came walking out on the stage just as she got to the platform and stairs and Elvis stopped walking on that end of the stage looked up and smiled!!!! My wife comes running back to her seat with a flushed face and huge grin and yells at us: "He smiled at me He smiled at ME!" 12,000 fans and "He smiled at her!" From then on she was a big big fan. I still laugh when I think about it.

I truly believe that when he and Cilla divorced he and his pride could not stand that pain. In the end just a very sad human being. It says a lot about dedicated fans, through thick and thin, good and bad times, they stuck by him. All his concerts sold out. Normally a. Artist would be washed up, finished in music, or dead. What was it that drove people to him , more then other artists. Despite even bad performances they still were loyal. They probably could sense how tired and excited he was, his vulnerability, that may have endeared him to fans. Plus the curiosity factor for even no. Fans. ELVIS PRESLEY in concer was a big deal. He was a music legend, opened the gates for other artists, he didn’t invent rock. roll, black artists did, but Elvis and Sam Phillips helped get them out in mainstream not in segregation. Plus for a white man he was something different. His history in music a factor too. He was still on the charts before he died. A male Cinderella story that happened naturally, and his dedication to his parents and his genorousity. He was an unusual phenomenon.

An amazing performer but completely different from Elvis, that's where wacko jacko copied James Brown shows. James Brown is a brilliant dancer but just lacked that charisma that Elvis had as a performer and singer. Even James Brown himself stated Elvis was the greatest when it came to performing, but James Brown beat Elvis when it came to dancing. As you know James and Elvis were truly great friends and James would hang out with Elvis at GRACELAND when, James came to Memphis. James Brown also put wacko jacko straight on important Elvis was too opening the doors for black performers back in the 1950s, 1960s and even the 1970s.

The man needed challenges. 56, he was world changing. Then after the army, the movies took their toll. 68 special, that challenge was career changing. Led into concerts again. In 72 you could see boredom setting in. Along comes the greatest TV event in history. Again, he was challenged. After that, his voice continued to evolve. In the 74 Live Memphis concert, you can hear his voice was ungodly strong and he sang with such ease. In late 75 thru 77, it was obvious he had no more challenges. If he'd been able to do " A Star is Born" I believe that was his next challenge. We all know why. By the time he did the 77 Special, he was too ill and may have known he was not long for this Earth. Yet his voice was unbelievable. It's always hard to believe from Aloha to the CBS Special was only 4 years. Thanks for all the great videos!

I am an Elvis fan, and I was sickened by what I heard and saw the night the '77 TV special aired. I was embarrassed for Elvis. Jerry Schilling in an interview, said they should have not allowed Elvis to do that TV special looking like he did. He was right. When Elvis met with Marty Passetta, the producer of Hawaii via Satellite, Marty told him he had to lose weight. Elvis did exactly that. Elvis praised Marty for being truthful. Everyone wants to claim Elvis's demise was Elvis's fault, Elvis wasn't mentally or physically well enough to make his own decisions. Col. Parker convinced Elvis that he owed him, and was indebted to him. It was Col. Parker's job to ensure "That Boy" was healthy enough to get on stage, and that he looked and sounded his best. Just like it was Marty Passetta's job in '73. Vernon Presley and others are guilty of letting Elvis down as well. This channel is my favorite Elvis channel because you always keep it real. I do care that Elvis's last few years were spent suffering. I do care that no one stepped up to do the right thing. He was savable.

The image is one thing and the human being is another. It's hard to live up to an image his words just a few but says alot. Think this clip nails what he said. He gave so much of himself to those gruelling tours. But still in the clip was that charisma bouncing of him. What a man, what a legend.

Thanks for finding this footage of Elvis! I believe a lot of his shows from 1975 on were performed with Elvis wearing down!, however, Some were probably not like his younger shows -the stress and strain mentally and physically were getting more evident to see probably because of everything going on at that time! There was so much and his health was starting to suffer! Just a lot involved in those later years! However, Elvis always lived by his motto TCB⚡️

Being a Elvis fan all my life from 69 to still today Elvis was a working machine he never took time to relax if he wasn’t touring he was recording and with all his health issues he had if you look at his recording dates and his concert dates this guy hardly slept plus up all night with friends singing gospel music you know why he was doing ups and downs plus pain medication on top that his fans always wanted more Tom Parker was about the money and worked the guy plus with people betrayed him it did it’s toll on Elvis there’s nobody still today can ever accomplish what he did it was not normal he was before his time and was blessed with a amazing voice. And there will never be another Elvis his voice never fouled him in the end and you can see that in 1977 CBS special singing How Great Thou Art

It’s always hard to see Elvis towards the end. ❤ I saw him twice in concert, early in 70’s and around this time. His voice was beautiful and he gave all he had. At that time, I was a teenager, I didn’t notice his weight or if less energetic - it was Elvis and he exuded charisma, I remember he was funny cracking smart comments between songs and so stunningly handsome. Miss him, thank you for sharing.

That’s what JD was for, the baritone! Not bad for a 20 year career. I just read a bunch of news paper reviews of Elvis’s concerts from my large metro hometown and they were all good reviews. Funny how they used to mention the age of him every time. “this 37 year old still could belt them out” Ageism was a big thing in the 70’s and 80’s. You never see reviews of performers mentioning their age now.

Elvis gave us so much of himself! By this point I’m sure Elvis was tired of being Elvis. He could reinvent himself a thousand times, but in the end he’d still be Elvis! The great thing is that he had such a wonderful band and it’s amazing to hear their musicianship. He’d always want us to pay attention to them, but unfortunately most people couldn’t care less! I love hearing the band! As of 1973 on , that’s what I most pay attention to

This is just a thought, maybe if fans made a plan tell let Elvis know they are worried about and maybe if they let him know he looks exhausted and isn’t performing at the level he had always performed and maybe if they could have told him he needs to take of himself and get help for all of the different medications he takes. I think his fans are the only ones he would have done anything to make them happy. And I know we can’t do anything about all of but it’s something I have been thinking about

Yeah, this was really sad to see. He was only 41 years old, but physically he was decades older, especially his internal organs. He hardly moved at all, neither physically nor vocally. His voice was almost a monotone, all the nuances were gone. The deeper line "Gator got your granny" is sung by either J.D. Sumner or one of the other deeper vocalists of The Stamps. He was just going through the motions on auto pilot and looked like he hoped he would be able to finish the song, let alone the full concert. Very sad to see and to realize what a stunning male specimen and great performer he was just a few short years earlier.

Elvis was living paycheck to paycheck. Elvis had told Vernon he could always make money by making a movie, a record or doing tours. When the first two options mainly dried up, only touring was left. His spending sprees caught up with him but he spent his money mostly on others and that's what we need to remember.

I TOTALLY AGREE with other Elvis fans that Elvis was the GREATEST singer on this earth. HOWEVER ..Elvis NEEDED his rest & regroup at Graceland ... I'd like to believe if fans in Memphis had known about how Parker treated Elvis ( pushing him beyond exhaustion) I'd like to believe the fans would have put up a protest against Parker or something... because ..just maybe Elvis would have lived to seen 45 or 50!

I will always be a Elvis fan and believe that he was the greatest male entertainer ever. But he was human. Have you ever traveled for vacation and when you return to work you tell yourself that you are more tired than you were before you left. God imagine having to fly around the country day after day staying in hotels performing and living up to the title Elvis. Sure it's great once or twice a year for the average person but to be under the microscope every time you step outside it had to be exhausting. A lot of entertainers did it and still do but do not deliver the goods as Elvis did. I'm surprised that he endured as long as he was able. I'm sure psychologically his head bounced off the charts highs and lows and on top of that he knew when he didn't give his all. It had to bother him. As for the book written by his bodyguards who else could have handled it as well as he did. He still was going out facing his fans with his head high. None of us will ever really know what was going on with him and as much as we all like to think we know Elvis we saw only what was offered to us. No one can pretend not to have faults or flaws. We are lucky to have recordings ,audio and videos to remember him. A great legacy left to the fans. I only wish he could have handled certain aspects of his life differently but I think a part of that is in all of us.
