Elliot Hacks A Pedophile | Mr. Robot

Ойын-сауық

From Mr Robot Season 1 Episode 1 "eps1.0_hellofriend.mov" Socially inept Elliot Alderson works at cyber security company Allsafe. At night, he hacks social media, personal information, and bank records, including those of his co-workers, therapist, and drug dealer. Elliot stops a DDoS attack against Allsafe's biggest client, E Corp. He identifies a file labeled fsociety00.dat and a text file asking him not to destroy malware he finds hidden on E Corp's server. Mr. Robot, the mysterious leader of the hacker group fsociety, contacts Elliot on the subway. Fsociety invites Elliot to join them in starting a digital revolution; they plan to delete all debt records held by E Corp. He is intrigued and eventually agrees. As his first collaborative act with fsociety, Elliot provides the FBI with an encrypted file falsely implicating Terry Colby, E Corp's own chief technology officer (CTO) as the orchestrator of the attack.

    This is honestly, I’m my opinion, the greatest opening to a show ever. It both sets a tone and creates an expectation for the show that it would soon dispel. It also tells us so much about Elliot as a character in such a short span without being too expository.

    @@blacknight1313 Wouldn't say it fell flat, more got way too muddied. The story remains intact for the majority of the show, note, I have not finished the show, got most of season 4 to finish. But I have to say, later on in the series, I'd say it started with season 3, the story becomes too vast, too many subplots going on to keep track of. Whenever a character would say something that I am supposed to understand, I never understood what they actually said until an episode later, your just given so many words you've never heard, given at least 6 stories to keep track of and it leaves the mid to end part of the story overly muddy and too hard to keep track of. The story was still good, just not told in the best way.

    I did the same thing to an ID thief at my old job. Dude kept on using his stolen identity to purchase orders and call me (I work customer service) but I refused to call him that and insisted on referring to him by his real name, basically implying that I have all his real, verified info including all his work contacts (that I gathered through legally and morally questionable means, of course) and I'm not one to be BS'd with. Like Elliot with kiddy diddlers, I have a grudge for ID thieves because I was a victim of one myself.

  • @YaroLord

    @YaroLord

    yeah he's so desperate to cling onto something that will spare him of getting what's coming to him. The whole time he's dumbfounded, wondering who tf is this kid and how does he know so much life-ruining info about him, and as predictable as it sounds, the second Elliot mentions something that makes him seem vulnerable, he visibly goes "eureka, this is what I will cling onto" and tries to seem empathetic, "i feel your pain, we're both human, see these tears? please don't utterly ruin my life" and then he starts crying, as a silent way to beg without actually saying it, but Elliot doesn't react with empathy, so he jumps to the next conclusion: blackmail - so he gathers whatever little courage he has left to pull the macho act, in a really pitiful attempt to show Elliot he has the upper hand... obviously this is completely worthless because Elliot isn't doing this neither to find an ally, to blackmail or for a reward... what's most impressive about his scene is that it's literally the first episode but you're already getting a massive foreshadow of what's to come, and the actual subconscious motive that brought elliot to take Ron down

    @@mryellow6918 it still does protect you very well, or atleast as long as you're not against some heavily/goverment funded adversary, tor itself uses 3 layered encryption which starts at your browser and ends at either exit node or at the webserver itself if it's a dedicated onion webserver, and even when it ends at the exit node your connection is still encrypted by TLS/SSH basically HTT/PS. The way Elliot compromised the server in this video is pretty simple, he didn't really exploit the onion routing at all. In a dedicated onion server the server is actually the exit node or the last node. The server itself was directly connected to the lan in the cafe(basically being hosted there), and everyone on the cafe's wifi was on the same connection as the server. All Elliot did was to find out that a server existed on the network (most probably due to the high bandwidth usage) and then he was able to compromise it by probably exploiting one of the plethora of pre-existing server vulnerabilities. And, looking at the existing ( or atleast known ) attack vectors of the Onion Routing framework there exists only a few. The more known one being "Exit Node MITM Attack", which could be easily avoided by using HTT/PS based websites as your traffic would be encrypted by PMS even after leaving the exit node, and SSL downgrades are blocked by most browsers, and while there exists "SSL certificate attacks", they could only be carried by someone who has access to be able to create a Certificate from a trusted certificate authority, again that being possibly only possible for the government. And the other one being controlling the Entry and exit nodes(and if possible the node in between too as while it's technically possible to correlate metadata between entry and exit nodes, it's a tedious and could not work sometimes if the traffic is high on the nodes.), But then again for that you basically need to operate a large number of onion routing nodes, which basically translates to high financial ability, which is only possible for very heavily funded organizations. Such as government.
