In one scene (at about 14:30) where Doakes smiles. It's the same smile as Dexter. That got me noticing that a lot of the shots after that show Doakes as Dexter's mirror, or another self. The lighting, camera angles, and such were usually used only on Dexter.

Doakes had spent his career steamrolling over everyone in his way. So finally when he comes up against Dexter, who isn’t intimidated or moved, Doakes gets suspicious. Dexter just happens to also be a murderer. But I have a feeling that Doakes would be this much of an asshole to anyone who didn’t fawn over him or act similar to Dexter.

I remember binge watching Dexter, Suits and Breaking Bad during covid, and they all had the same thing in common, they all started out with a 3 season premise, but ended up becoming huge hits, and they all had to make adjustments to the shows to allow them to continue. The actor who played Dokes was a great actor, and was in fantastic shape. Unfortunately the “Will Dokes catch Dexter” or “Will Mike be found out” story lines could only last a couple seasons, and they had to make changes to keep moving forward. Breaking Bad kept Jessie when he was supposed to have been killed off, and brought in Gus Fring to advance the story.

I loved how Dexter and Doakes both had solid morals on paper, but those morals being corrupted by their respective "dark passenger" The former had a taste for killing and indulged it by punishing those who he believed not only deserved it, but also couldn't be properly punished by the law. He has no illusions about the fact that he's a literal serial killer and even struggles with the morality of it when faced with the choice to kill someone like Doakes to stay out of jail Whereas the latter has an ego the size of saturn, to the point it borders on a hero complex. He's a bully who enjoys the violence he can inflict as a police officer and the ability to intimidate the "lab geeks" into covering for him. He insulted, threatened and harrased Dexter cause he "gave him the creeps". In reality it was because he was the only one who stood up to him consistently recognised something very familiar. Even after he catches Dexter red-handed, he doesn't want to arrest Dexter because he's a serial killer, he wants to dp it so he can prove everyone he was *right*

I've always thought it is interesting that Doakes' "public persona" was way creepier and more ruthless than Dexter's. In my opinion, that's what brought his downfall. Dexter is a shadow, he is darkness hiding in plain sight. Doakes' is a neon sign, he is close to darkness, but he is too obvious, anyone can see him
