I have never seen a music video so simply, beautifully, disturbingly brilliant. I am in awe.
So dark, so melancholic, so sad, so great and touching.
I love the natural and yet subtle movements he makes in front of the mirror. The human presence is strong and you can literally see into his thinking. The subtle longing in his voice makes it that much more 3-D and complex

@vars666 Cierto.

Bravo bravo !!!!
I went to a show in DC a bunch of years ago and yelled out "Sehnsucht!" then Blixa made the wise-ass remark "We did play Sehnsucht....in 1981" and everyone laughed at me. The next year they played it all tour. Screw you Blixa, I knew it would still rock today!

I was introduced to Neubauten by some of my goth mates back in 1992. I liked them immediately, because I saw similarities between them and early Tangerine Dream, tho' when I said that out loud, the aforementioned goth mates gave me the filthiest looks! 30 years on, I stand by that statement even more than I did back then. If you listen to Tangerine Dream''s "Alpha Centauri" album from 1971, you MIGHT see what I'm getting at. You probably won't (the goth mates I mentioned didn't) but you might.

The song was written for a movie about German reunification, hence the name Sabrina, which was a character in the movie. And of course it's about Germany, or rather, the flag. How exactly to interpret it is up to everyone. I think it expresses the discomfort of the majority of Germans to feel a love for something like their own flag (or country) and at the same time to have a longing to be "normal" again and at least not to have to feel disgust anymore.

+Mme.Tenebrae I must say the music alone has this effect on me. In fact, I saw the video after repetively crying over this song (for its sheer potency, though, not for its bleakness) and I was definitely blown away. I love how EN can write such emotion-ful songs about "serious" topics (meaning, avoiding the easy exploitation of love, weltanschauung or hollywood feelings) and create pure poetry. This whole album is full of such examples, e.g. Silence is Sexy and Total Eclipse of the Sun, but also other songs like Blumen, The Garden, Perpetuum Mobile, Stella Maris (ok this is about love, but it really goes beyond)... Ok, I just understood I'm crazy about Einestuerzende Neubauten.
Tremendous song. Powerfull lyrcs. Been following EN since my teenagers years and, after almost 30 years, I' m still enloved with their music. Seele Brennt, from the Halber Mensch album, opened my eyes, way bac when I was 17, to a all new world of art, music and beauty.

Ich war am Konzert 1985 in San Francisco. I will never forget it. It was phantastic!

Max Cady Hey, just wondering since you have a picture from the film as your profile pic. .... do you have The Night of the Hunter on here?... I'd appreciate if so...Can't find it :/
Scrolling through the comments, I've come across some interesting interpretations of the song. I'd like to add an idea: keep in mind that the colors he sings about are red-gold-black. Those are the colors of the german flag (it's a german band)! It could point to a bemoaning of the actual state of this country. "I wish this would be your color!" is a hint to a desire that the country should remain true to the principles these colors symbolize! 2:58 "It is a starless winternight's tale" is a clear reference to Heinrich Heines 'Deutschland. Ein wintermärchen.'! The ideals of red and gold aren't reached ("it's not that red!" and "it's not gold(en) at all!"). The only correspondence in a shallow and not symbolic way lies in "black" in the meaning of 'darkness'. The state we're in is pitiful..."it is that black...it is that black..."

In Welsh mythology, Sabrina was the Latin version of the name Hafren. Hafren was the bastard daughter of a Welsh king named Locrin and a German princess named Estridis. Locrin falls in love with Estridis after rescuing her from a group of Huns, but is in a diplomatic marriage with a Cornish princess named Gwendolyn. When the Cornish king dies, Locrin divorces Gwendolyn and marries Estridis - legitimizing Hafren. Gwendolyn returns home to Cornwall and raises an army. Wales and Cornwall go to war, Locrin is killed, and Gwendolyn becomes queen and has Estridis and Hafren drowned in a river. I don't know if this bit of mythology ties into the song, but it feels more than little coincidental that Hafren/Sabrina was half-German.
Even after a decade this song gives a lot of energy. This will be a forgotten master piece of our time.
Kind of reminds me of Massive Attack. The whole aesthetic, the low bass, the creepy undertones, the textural beauty with a dark mood, the string section, the percussion and even the vocals all scream Massive Attack, just more avant-garde

Where has this band been...my mind is offically blown
Hope to see them on tour in June.

Love the mood of the song and the clip is just awesome.
This reminds me a bit of the most tragic and painful film drama I've ever experienced (and probably one of the most tragic, painful, desperate and relentless fates a human can suffer): David Lynch's "Elephant Man", the story of Joseph (John) Merrick. IMDB says it's a US production, but as far as I know it's rather British. An ingenious and unique masterstroke and a paragon of humanity. (Plus that irresistibly illustrating empathic musical background: Samuel Barber's orchestrated Adagio from his string quartet op. 11, which gives the tragedy a disarming, almost ethereal shape of passion, yet auguring the sweetness of salvation.) Sometimes absurdity is an indirection to approach the truth. (And sometimes it only needs the right facial features to get entertained.) I wish the cornigerous one would disguise as a human instead of having a soliloquy with his reflection. The glass helps provide the insight, but it also prevents the merging: What you see is what you never get. So take your lipstick and try to prettify the other one, the red icon will always be between the two of you. - If this playlet grips you in whatever way, if the warm and subtle music enters your mind and soul, then there's no need to cleave your brain, let art speak to you and not explain. (By the way: Everyone is free to make sense of it, but the colour order is red - golden (yellow) - black. So if it turned out to be that prosaic and political I could frankly claim that it's rather Belgium, a country Heinrich Heine never graced with his presence. Furthermore it's true that there's are some nights, some skies and stars mentioned in Heine's "Wintermärchen" poem, however, a loose or a direct textual reference is not evident to me (which does not mean that it's not actually there). On the other hand the general connection is obvious: In 1996 one of the best and most prolific theatrical stages in Germany, the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf in Heine's home city, performed Mr. Cash's extremely noisy theatre idea "Heinrich Heine - Von Tod an rückwärts liebeskrank"... Well, the affinity is given, however, I'm not sure about the corresponding quality aspect...) Without any doubt this video clip is a remarkable scenic effort, but I have my problems with the symbiosis of watching and listening, since the picture appears to me very dominant. So I experience this weighty piece of art in two different ways, respectively stressing what I see and what I hear, with the consequence that I can much more intensely relish this music unvisualised.
Wow wow I almost forgot how great this song is !
The fact that the title of the first song that I found of them is my name is really cool

"It is as black as Malevich's square The cold furnace in which we stare" Goddamn, that is powerful. And horrifying.

and germany's past with the present. notice the colors and the lyrics that follow. Wish I was that brilliant.
I've never felt more understood.
Great music, crazy about this band many years. Thankx.
As an avid listener, collector, and musician, I'm always incredibly disappointed in myself whenever I happen to come across something special like this, only to realize that it really shouldn't be new to me... Oh well, better late than never, I suppose.
great song! has alot of emotion behind it! can definitely see many directions you can interpret it
i absolutely love this song, so beautiful and eloquent, speaks so much while saying so little
I was so lucky to meet Blixa after a show, in Bologna, when i was 15. He s really like that...a cathartic person. He probably does n t even remember about me, but he still changed my life.
