"Fever Ray and the song Keep the Streets Empty struck us immediately with its fateful sound and images of abandoned suburbia begun to grow in front of our eyes. We wanted to continue the journey that started in the former videos and our ambition was to catch the feeling in a very direct and true way and create a video where dream and reality intertwine." - Fabian and Jens

I was walking home in Edinburgh to that song one night, after a late library session in the middle of the winter. Snow was falling and the streets were eerily empty so it just fit perfectly. Just as I was about to arrive I met a fox under these old pedestrian lights, its footprints imprinted in the snow, watching me. I remember staying there a while, thinking how peaceful this was. Perfect song, perfect moment.

I'm not 72 lol I'm alone...in a battered auld caravan...in the Scottish Highlands... It's after midnight...on a pink moon and the peak of the lyrids meteor shower 😍 and this is the theme tune I chose for tonight's movie for one... I'm heading out to look at the pink moon and catch a few shooting stars. Couldn't make this perfection up lol. Pure bliss 😁♥️😎

Now as a grown man, I'm finally becoming able to go back, way back through the time, to the place, and find, hug, comfort and talk to the child I once was, and who is sitting there alone, frightened, hurt and misunderstood. That kid I used to be and - that I still am. To tell him that it's not his fault and that everything'll be ok.

He has many battles ahead of him. Take your comfort and fight for those who never achieved salvation. It is not your fault, it never was but you loved those who made mistakes and they put their pain onto you because they couldn't carry it any longer. So now what? Use what you have to help others. There is no greater calling than this.

Memory comes when memory's old I am never the first to know Following the stream up North Where do people like us float There is room in my lap For bruises, asses, handclaps I will never disappear For forever, I'll be here Whispering Morning, keep the streets empty for me Morning, keep the streets empty for me I'm laying down, eating snow My fur is hot, my tongue is cold On a bed of spider web I think of how to change myself A lot of hope in a one man tent There's no room for innocence So take me home before the storm Velvet mites will keep us warm Whispering Morning, keep the streets empty for me Morning, keep the streets empty for me Whispering Morning, keep the streets empty for me Morning, keep the streets empty for me Uncover our heads and reveal our souls We were hungry before we were born Uncover our heads and reveal our souls We were hungry before we were born Uncover our heads and reveal our souls We were hungry before we were born Uncover our heads and reveal our souls We were hungry before we were born Tiocfaidh ár lá 😘❤️💞

We need to tend to the wounded, as the human soul is at odds with itself, and suffering. We ignore the tired, drug-addicted, homeless suffering on the streets. That is not a problem that will heal itself, but requires action, in inspiration from our artists who have become god-like in their castles and disconnected from their people. Say nothing of our leaders, because they are even worse. What do we do? I start with myself, and devote myself to first trying to heal the core of my beautiful city, Seattle. I start in 3 days working downtown on the streets of every alley I know all too well. I do it for love of humanity, and for whatever good may remain within us. Great Song.

This is a poetic masterpiece. A song about isolation, very true today. And Karin's exceptionally nuanced voice together with the unique sound of twilight make this a perfect companion on a sleepless night ! Sure seems to feel like you are waking up surrounded by icy crystals on a winter's morning.

Heilkraft Thanks for the info. I like it ! "I'm laying down eating snow" takes a new meaning, as a calling from Nature herself, instead of being a request for solitude. That being said, there's always more than one interpretation to a work of art.

Found elsewhere: Empathetic is a recent term; it comes from empathy, which was coined by the German philosopher Rudolf Lotze in 1858. Lotze believed that when you look at a work of art, you project your own sensibilities onto it.

I listened to this album during a very dark part of my life and it helped keep me from jumping off of the highest building I could find. I heard Fever Ray through a streaming radio thing I think Last FM was it and it played Concrete Walls which blew me away. Then I got the full album and all of the Knife stuff that was out there. I'd shuffle it all up with some other artists and it was how I kept sane for a while.

I really feel like I need to explain this song from the perspective of a homeless person. Because as hauntingly sad and beautiful as it is, I feel like it is more so, from that perspective. I feel like the first verse is expressing moments of abuse that much of the time will lead a youth to homelessness most likely coupled with the abusive lifestyle of actually being homeless. There are many preditors that prey on the homeless and when you are living with serious abuse and you become homeless, there is even a concern that you may be killed and yet a refusal to allow that to happen...a refusal to become one of the dissappeared and a will to fight for yourself. I feel like the chorus refers to the need for the homeless to stay invisible, when you are invisible you can't be arrested or targeted. So, when morning comes, you are praying the streets stay empty until you can find a way to blend in or somewhere to go. I feel like the next verse, is showing how it actually feels to live on the street. When you live on the street, you will find food and bed wherever you can, even if you have to eat snow or sleep on a bed of spiderwebs but at the same time, you are thankful if you have a warm coat. In those moments, when you are alone and going to sleep, all you can think about is how to change, how to fix your life. You have to cling to hope in order to keep going...even when you look around and see that you currently live in a tent or (if you are real lucky) a car but one thing that you lose, that you never get back, is innocents. You can't remain innocent, when you see what happens on the streets or behind certain closed doors, where you or someone you know might end up and because you know how bad things can get, you pray to find home before you lose hope or become a statistic. I feel like the last words "uncover our heads and reveal our souls, we were hungry befoure we were born" is the full truth behind all of it. If people could take off the veil of prejidice or the mask of invisibility and see the Human being and thier, likely very sad, story...maybe we could make a change. People like this are not bad people, most of them never really had a chance. Alot of them are born into poverty, abuse, mental illness or drugs. Some of them may have had to run and hope for the best, in order to save thier own life.

I used to love sneaking out of my boarding school and wandering the empty streets, the woods and heaths at night. It was an escape from painful, unhappy, stressful captivity into a quiet and mysterious world, simultaneously peaceful and thrilling. Under snow, the mundane was transformed into the magical - all the more so because in southern England it's so rare and so ephemeral. This music captures the essence of those memories so well.

I don't even remember the first time I heard this song, must be in high school about 8 years ago, but I've never lost this recondite connection to it. I grew up drifting through many different periods in my life, moved to another country, changed lifestyles, views, friends and looks, but throughout all these years this song meant a lot to me, it soothed me and reconnected with my deepest essence, let me feel the unfathomable force of creation and hear the eternal call of emptiness from the deeps. It guided me through lonely walks in all kinds of places around the world and inside my head. It covered me with an invisible blanket on the darkest night and lulled me to sleep. And now I'm here to listen to this song one more time on the eve of my 23rd birthday so as to wrap up one more year of my life and return to what's most important. Thank you, Fever Ray, thank you for writing a score for my life.
