시놉시스: 2007년, 정치범의 가족으로 고통받다 못한 영순는 작은 아들 소사를 데리고 탈북했다. 각고의 노력 끝에 한국에 정착한 이후 어쩐지 두 사람은 점점 더 멀어져간다. 엄마 영순은 남한사회의 자유로운 분위기를 축복이라 여기며 악착같이 살아내는데 골몰해 있다. 푸드트럭은 물론 공사장 인부까지, 갖은 일을 마다하지 않는 그는 통장에 차곡차곡 쌓이는 현금으로 자신의 삶을 증명한다. 반면 아들 소사는 영문도 모른 채 끌려온 남한의 삶이 당혹스럽다. 살가운 정 한 번 느낄 새 없이 바빴던 엄마는 원망스럽기만 하고 방황하는 소사에게 남한사회는 기회의 땅이 아니라 차별의 땅일 뿐이다. 엄마의 공사장 노동 현장에 이어 집에 드러누워 TV를 보는 소사를 비교하듯 보여주는 카메라는 얼핏 소사를 바람직한 청년이란 삶의 궤도로 올려놓고자 애쓰는 엄마의 마음을 닮았다. 그러나 소사의 내밀한 심경에 다가갈수록, 미처 우리가 알지 못했던 탈북자에 대한 한국사회의 편견과 차별이 얼마나 그들에게 깊은 내상을 입히고 있었는지가 드러난다.
In 2007, Youngsoon defected with her younger son Sosa as she could no longer bear the suffering imposed for being the family of a political prisoner. They managed to settle in South Korea after some painstaking time, but somehow the two grew further apart. Youngsoon considers herself blessed to be in such a free country and is preoccupied with toil and moil. She proves the meaning of her life with the hard- earned cash piling up in her bank account by working in food trucks and construction sites, to mention a few. On the other hand, Sosa finds his life in South Korea puzzling. For Sosa, South Korea is not a land of opportunity but discrimination. He also resents his mother, who is too busy to give him affection. The camera shows the mother working at a construction site, followed by Sosa watching TV lying on the couch at home as if it wants to portray the mother’s efforts to put Sosa on track to becoming a sound young man. However, the more we approach Sosa’s inner feelings, the more we realize that the prejudice and discrimination of South Korean society against North Korean defectors are hurting them deeply.
