🔧 Join us in this exciting episode where we dive into our latest project: retrofitting three classic pickup trucks! We're taking an International, a Dodge, and a Ford F450 and giving them a whole new life.
🚚 First up, we take a look at the International truck, which is set to undergo a significant transformation. Despite some challenges like a leaking carburetor and sound blasting needs, we're all set to turn this truck into a high HP Diesel Electric machine.
😎 Feel the excitement as we attempt the daring feat of loading an old truck with no brakes onto a trailer. Watch as we carefully position the truck, chain it down, and prepare for the journey ahead.
🛠️ Over in Drayton Valley, Alberta, the action continues with a 2007 Ford F450. Keabray, has already made significant progress, having removed the engine and preparing for the Caterpillar engine installation. This service truck is not just a vehicle; it's a step towards achieving environmental sustainability goals in the oil and gas industry. We're making it Tier 4 emissions compliant!
🌍 As we focus on retrofitting for environmental sustainability, we're also considering practical aspects like battery placement and protection against off-road conditions.
🔋 Excitement builds as we introduce the 1995 Dodge 2500, destined for DeBoss Garage. This two-wheel drive gas truck may seem useless in Canada's climate, but we see it as the perfect candidate for a diesel and electric four-wheel drive transformation!
🎥 Follow our journey filled with challenges, innovative solutions, and a bit of fun as we retrofit these trucks. We're not just transforming vehicles; we're redefining what's possible in automotive retrofitting.

🔧 Built by Truckers, for Truckers 🔧
Founded by Chace Barber and Eric Little in 2016, Edison Motors is a testament to the trucking spirit. Beginning with a 1969 Kenworth Logging Truck named "Old Blue," they journeyed from Merritt, BC, hauling logs to the Yukon and drilling rigs in Alberta. Frustrated with newer trucks, they rebuilt classics from the frame up, expanding into power generation and off-grid solar systems in 2019. Their journey led to the creation of the Edison Truck, a robust electric truck tailored to logging and heavy vocational industries.
🔩 Upgrade Without Replacing: Edison Electrification Kit 🔩
Keep trucks on the road longer with the Edison Electrification kit. Upgrade your driveline to electric without replacing the entire truck. Ideal for vocational applications, this kit is a cost-effective solution. Unlike other electric trucks, Edison Motors offers customer choice. Choose between Rebuilding (utilizing existing cab and frame rails) or Remanufacturing (brand new frame and chassis).
🚚 Payload Efficiency: The Weight Balance 🚚
Edison Trucks match the weight of a normal diesel truck. With reduced motor weight and additional fuel balancing out battery weight, experience efficiency and increased payload capacity. The L series, though slightly heavier, remains comparable to a normal diesel truck.
🛠️ Keep Your Equipment with Rebuilt Trucks 🛠️
For vocational trucks, keep your equipment with a rebuilt truck. Edison's e-pto and control system integrate seamlessly. No need to replace your entire body when upgrading to an electric truck.
🔧 Bespoke Manufacturing: Handcrafted to Your Needs 🔧
The manufacturing process at Edison Motors is a testament to their commitment to customer satisfaction. Each Edison Truck undergoes a meticulous five-step process, from frame and rolling chassis preparation to final touches and rigorous testing. The focus is on building a truck that reflects the customer's requirements, embracing the philosophy of "Building The Truck Of The Future With The Quality Of The Past."
🔌 Electric or Diesel-Electric: Your Power, Your Choice 🔌
Edison Motors offers both fully electric and diesel-electric vocational trucks based on customer demands. The onboard generator ensures continuous operation in areas lacking charging infrastructure.
💡 Advantages of Electric: Power, Torque, Longevity 💡
Edison Trucks bring increased power, torque, reliability, and longevity. Inspired by electric freight trains, regenerative ability harnesses energy for efficient uphill climbs.

Chase, see if you can include tie down points on the E-axles so that if a truck has to be towed or hauled that there are dedicated points we can chain up too. That way you are not tearing up break lines and speed sensors just to haul it somewhere. Or heaven forbid someone doesn’t know how to secure a load and connects to a steering arm because that was all they could find. Tie points sounds like a very Edison thing to have on an E-Axle, it makes sense.

Very excited to get the 95 in our driveway here in Ontrario. First plans are to remove the wheels and tires and list them for sale lol. Solid axle swap is next showing that all trucks will be able to be retrofitted even if its IFS. Next is 2.8 Cummins swap, and a Gen 4 Lariat leather interior to replace the cracked from factory dash that came in the 2nd Gen. Heated and cooled seats with full LCD displays. Who else is excited to see these trucks go under the knives'?

I don't exactly have a trained eye for this, but the underside of that International looks surprisingly good. Lots of surface rust, but nothing looks like it's about to fall apart. I guess it never experienced years of modern road salting.

I just bought a ‘54 international from Illinois. Been sitting outside in the grass for the past 3 years. Barely even surface rust on the frame. My 2012 Colorado on the other hand already is starting to get some holes in the frame. Those old trucks were made of sturdier stuff!

That was probably one of the few times that truck even saw any main roads, since its arrival to that...farm? Homestead? Property.
I had a 1947 KB-1 International pickup when I was in college back in 1975-76 in Pullman, Washington. I paid 250.00 bucks for it and after I graduated I drove it loaded with all my possessions to Seattle, Washington.
Y’all need more content like this. Also, that international is gonna turn out perfect, I can tell.
I think the hunt is on already for cool old truck candidates for your conversion. Way to go!
My first vehicle was a 48 International KB1. That thing was built like a tank! Ventilation was cranking open the windshield. In summer for additional 'cooling' you could remove the steel floor and watch the road go bye.
The 45 international makes me feel things I had in my childhood. The 2 wd to 4 wd excites me a little much. I need to track down a nice old truck and save it for this conversion.
Crazy that we’re getting to watch the future of vehicles being broadcast live. Can’t wait for mine to be converted…

Love the international, but I was very excited and surprised about the service truck!!! That’s exactly what I expect to be doing a lot of. From electric company’s and others in the service industry.
One thing that always surprises me about trucks, tractors, and other equipment, why aren’t there standard tie down points for hauling. Every time you go to chain down a truck, it’s a game of where can I tie this down and not damage anything and still be secure. I can understand on old trucks where things like that are never thought about. But come on, how hard is it to incorporate a loop on the frame where you can attach a chain to tie down with. I have the same issue with my John Deere Tractor, no dedicated tie down points. How am I supposed to haul it to an authorized dealer 100 miles away to get my check engine lite diagnosed, when I have to weld on my own tie points and hope my welds don’t break.

Volvo has tie down/ancor points on all their heavy equipment, not sure about trucks though.
@jmanlinc
3 ай бұрын
@VikingstalMotor almost all construction equipment has tie down locations due to the fact they get hauled around between every job. Farm equipment doesn't spend that much time on a trailer so it's not as important, but I know I have seen anchor points on some JD's, though its been many moons since I really looked closely at a piece of farm equipment.

What i love about this guy is he is no stranger to chaining down a load.
This is perfect...after watching Louis Rossman's video highlighting your company and now I have a path to create my own hybrid Mitsubishi Mighty Max 4 runner!!
Wow! Love the first truck, the beauty of those old style trucks are just amazing! But functionality wise I'm most excited about the service truck. It resembles the usability that I am looking to do in the future when my wallet gets big enough and the engine of my old '76 VW LT31 ice cream and espresso truck dies. And to be honest, the food truck market where your solution also makes a lot of sense, not having to plug in everywhere you go and bringing diesel generators in case there is not the right or enough power outlets.
@Fallouttec
3 ай бұрын
This honestly, having the truck serve also as off grid power supply is a huge benefit to this design, theres been times at home where the powers been gone for a few days during/after a massive winter storm; so having one of these trucks in the driveway would make it incredibly easy to run out and plug in the “essentials” during long haul power outage.

Chase. In the eighties and before, four wheel drive was not the given it is today, yet we all survived.
Basic towing safety checks, I like that. Driving a few miles and then re-tighten those chains - there's nothing more dangerous than a load flopping around on your trailer. ✌
Something I'd love to see for the next set would be a GMC/Isuzu cab-over, maybe a reefer box. So many of those on the road in vancouver.
Can't wait to see that old Dodge.
I love old Internationals, maybe someday I will retrofit my '69 pickup.

Was my truck a few years back, my neighbor bought it (old timer) almost new and used it to tow his small fifth wheel to Arizona in the winter, ran it every month for dump runs, and it sat as his health declined, I bought it from him after it sat in his carport for a few years, disclaimer*wheels were $900 on marketplace with new tires so I bought them for it because I thought it would be funny and the tires on it were super dry rotted from sitting, had 160k km on it when I bought it in 2020
So much to love about this. (3/4?) Log chains,loading with a tractor,bringing back vehicles which had no value before. Common sense,can do attitude!
It would be cool as hell if you guys made a kit with like two of those hubs or similar electric motors in synch, in line, mounted with a flywheel so that it could be attached to a normal transmission. Then a motor that could fit still in the engine compartment could supply the recharge, run the power steering and possibly AC or heat and supply vacuum for the transmission if it needs it.
Ohh yeah 👍 come on, we knew how to build trucks back then, you can still fix it drive it today and work it today , wish trucks were built like that.
Sweet!!! I have a 1947 International KB5.

I hope to be the first to do a school bus, but hey Chase, BlueBird Canada should be wooing you guys to make diesel electric school buses.
@BlackEpyon
2 ай бұрын
They already make their own electrics. School and city buses are usually doing set routes, so plugging in to charge between routes isn't as much of an issue.
@daniellewis1789
2 ай бұрын
Figure any school bus build really needs to have Vehicle to Grid support - they're going to be operated mostly morning (after charging up at 3AM) and afternoon (after topping up at noon) - both at relative low points on the demand curve. This means leftover juice can be sold during the evening after the kids are home, as the sun goes down and parents cook dinner during the demand peak, just as solar is losing effectiveness, and during the weekends and summertime they're available as very large for their capacity grid scale storage units. Assuming the power is being sold at sufficient margin to cover the wear on the battery plus the cost to buy the power, this could substantially defray the purchase or retrofit cost of the bus fleet.
If that International KB still has its original engine and trans, DON'T scrap them. They'll be rare by now so another vintage truck fan will be able to use them, even just for parts. Chaining the pickups explains why wreckers have strapping systems that strap each wheel down individually instead of attaching to the suspension or body.

Nice, very very smart way of go, I'm a diesel mechanic, from my perspective this is the way of going is far is future
I own a 2 wheel 1997 dodge 2500 extended cab cummins truck. It has a limited slip rear end. It gets good fuel mileage. Not too many parts to replace to keep it going. It has a higher payload than the 4x4 version, as it does not have front drive stuff, and transfer-case. It is lower to the ground than a regular 4x4, so it is easier for my old body to climb up into it. I think all these are a plus for me here in Saskatchewan. It is mostly used to haul my slide in-camper, and my many boats. So it is a 3 season usage truck. 350000km and still going.
