@@TheBeeMan1994 Cars like the Prius have also proven this style of driveline in cars, though the big difference with car or trucks and trains is the restriction on GVW and size. Batteries have only recently come to a point where having a battery on a lorry has become a practical option. As in you don't lose too much carrying capacity, if any at all, so it's finally starting to make practical and economical sense to do these conversions. Also I think that because Edison is basically building a century old proven concept, and they're using already existing frames as their platform, they have a good chance of succeeding. They're not trying to reinvent the wheel, which is a good thing in this case.

@@johnsnow1355not really. it comes down to money. This truck weight about 5 ton more than a standard daycab. That means less freight being hauled which means less revenue in most cases. It also shuts off a good portion of the freight market that expects a truck to legally haul 45,500 lbs legally. That right there is a huge impediment when the government is restricting weight limits or charging for permits to be overweight. Busses and trains don't have that same issue. Busses will not reach their rated weight limits and trains have different ways of calculation (highwr weights per car or unit verses a total weight). This gives them a lot more room for extra weight. A daycab with these types of bells and whistles should weight in between 15 and 17 thousand pounds. Add a sleeper for over the road and you are looking at around 19-22k.

It's the biggest concern I have with transitional issues across the market.... probably take weeks minimum to get it fixed... Probably cost you an incredible amount too.... When enough people transition over supply change will be improved and the right to repair issues will hopefully be addressed... Examples I can refer to : say a battery system having a cooling system malfunction due to road debris compromising the cooling system\fluid flow that runs through the battery pack... Instances where they state they will only replace the entire battery pack in one unit instead of fixing a hose or connector.. . Quoting the cost of $22,000 instead of a couple hundred dollars... . . But you had the guts to try, being able to see a proper trucker take our industry in a sensible direction as opposed to pure battery is refreshing. Last week I had my first brush with non diesel trucking: compressed natural gas. I know it's better for the environment, but my inner 8 year old misses the big diesel v8 blowing through the stack of the Scania R520 I was in before. My only suggestion for this rig is cameras. You've made so many design concessions for driver visibility you've missed a chance at replicating the bumper mirror on euro cabovers.

its what happens when a trucker designs a truck rather than an engineer. vs the Tesla where you have engineers designing a truck. this truck is overbuilt, simple, thought out. look at the cab design. he's got windows at foot level. it lets him look down and out for near objects low to the ground, like a curb. or a stump. the motors nested between the axles and protected. its not just mud. car parts road debris etc. it can run electric only mode so you can roll down a window and a spotter can be heard shouting at you. the truck is brilliant. its field serviceable. like he says you break a spring hanger you can fix it in the field. you don't need a torch. looking at it there is no reason it can't also be used as a mobile emergency generator. a typical hybrid car gets 40-50% better fuel economy than its not hybrid models. even if this thing only averages 20% over a convential truck. the most fuel effcient one gets 10 mpg. so if this thing does say 12 mpg here is a break down of the cost savings. typical truck does what 3-5k in mileage a week? lets use the low end, 3k. thats 600 miles a day 5 days a week. 3k a week, 150k a year. low end estimate. 10mpg at $4.29 a gallon = 64,350 a year 12 mpg at :4.29 a gallon = $53,625 thats assuming only a 20% increase over a regular effcient truck and only 3k miles a week. more miles or better mpg = even more money saved. i think you are looking at worse case 11k a year saved on fuel.

I doubt it. The whole EV thing is basically just another feather in the climate change hysteria pillow. There are better technologies and methods that would retard fuel consumption while extending work but it's not as flashy or as impressive to the average layman and so we don't get useful changes but political and crony-capitalist ones instead. From the start "renewables" have been a black hole for government funding and despite the oodles of money poured in none have turned a profit or even broke even as far as I've heard. Many aren't even "green" once you factor in production & waste which is hilariously ironic.

But great ideas and I like the retro fit idea for older trucks and he’s so open about being flexible with customers building what they want and not wanting to sell them just your opinion of what they need. And the simplicity is a big factor for me. Reliable and affordable is not considered today in most markets. I wish them great success

As a former army mechanic, equipment designed to have good access for repair is a godsend. I can't count the number of times I swore on the designer who put some easily repaired piece in the most awkward place. Like the adjustable end of a parking brake cable on the transfer case instead of in the cab. Where you had to crawl and sit in the mud for 30 mins because there was only room to get a 1/12 of a turn on the nut each time. I congratulate you for having some forward thinking to actual use of yhe equipment.

Honestly I dont blame the designers, at least not totally. They know what will need to be replaced/maintenanced and they could certainly guess about what would make something easy to replace. I blame the accountants and the marketing team who drive the designers to make it as cheap to assemble as possible and deliberately tell designers to make something hard to replace to drive dealership repair revenues. I believe that these two initiatives drive every single design decision for the large brands and the unfortunate result is trucks (and cars, even more so) that are hard and expensive to work on.

Its simple, does what it is supposed to to and its economical, efficient, and its very easy for people to see what is happening. I was a young man when I started at the steel mill and all the old timers thought motor drives were magic and were going to replace their jobs and they would never work as good etc, etc. But when you got them to talk about it when no one was around they agreed that in many ways they were a huge improvement. All the die hard truckers will come around after a while once they see how practical this will be.

The control system came from diesel electric submarines although the tech is from the 1890s /1910s. GE made a diesel electric locomotive for WWI. The real difference with modern stuff is the batteries. GE has even made a hybrid battery locomotive. The whole thing has come full circle. So yea why hasn't anyone does this before??? PS: I once specked a Marmon truck with a Duetz air cooled V8, ZF auto tranny, and a Spicer planetary rear end. Never had it built but it would of been sweet:) So I guess I could do a Duetz rather than a Cat?

The current cab configuration is very utilitarian, and obviously not suitable for some long haul truckers that need a sleeper. But based on Chase's background, it is clear that he built a working truck for loggers, snow plow operators, and other industries that need durability and visibility more than they need looks and creature comforts. This is a hell of a machine and very impressive to see pulling 100k lbs. It is absolutely amazing how much torque is available to get moving with zero noise or shifting. It just seems effortless. I've been follwing them and i really look forward to seeing the generator running and it pulling a full load on the highway. I really think there is a market for trucks built to this spec, but I think Chase is on to something with regard to retrofits and gliders. With the way our governments are going, that may be a reasonable (cost effecive, and efficient) option for keeping trucks on the road.

Saves brakes and charges batteries. They can also work for road trains for where that is legal. Will be a game-changer for the heavy haul stuff as well. Currently heavy haul is done with old Canadian trucks like the Pacifics and they have to have two, three and four trucks to get loads up hills. Now they'll be able to have one tractor and one driver. Retired CDL truck driver/instructor Wa State. Extremely impressed with your electric truck and your approach to things. Some say "Common sense is a dying art" ... I'm glad to say you prove that is not the case! For years I've said to my wife "why doesn't someone come up with an electric kit to convert 1980's minivans to hybrid electric, especially those GM made vans with rear wheel drive", put an electric motor in the original drive line, and batteries under the floor. So many useable older vehicles would have a new lease on life instead of going to the scrap yard crusher!

I love the visibility windows at the foot well. That sort of design choice would help a lot of truckers with spotting those little cars that like to hang in the blind spot instead of passing quickly and getting out of the way. On a different note, This is the way I'd been saying hybrid electric long haul trucks should be designed. Trains have been this way for a long time.

@@BlackEpyon This is exactly the point I've proposed regarding just how appropriate an EV design isn't but could be for anything longer than local delivery trucks. Edison has shown clearly how it can be done effectively with fairly simple current technology. With the "Tesla Model" technology everything I've heard of so far has a very limited range. There comes that "layover stop" to recharge. It's impractical for a business to be that limited by the equipment some government entity is forcing upon the working public. On the other hand, for lack of a better idea, I think an infrastructure that includes scheduled stops at the service shop would be more practical. The truck's range limits could allow the dead battery pack to be replaced with a fully charged unit in about the time taken for a current fuel stop. It would require a relatively expensive investment in these battery shops along the proposed routes. Edison's hybrid design is far more economical for the initial equipment investment and also for operating costs. I really like his ideas about practical design that encourages serious longevity. I'm driving a 2000 F250 Power Stroke 7.3 Liter Ford with 375,000 miles on it. This is one of the last trucks I've heard of that actually have a realistic expectation of lasting 1,000,000 miles with reasonable care. Edison's proposed trucks could make that idea commonplace!! This guy's ideas are some of the best I've heard in a very long time for this topic. My concern is that some governmental entity could come along with some sort of conflicting opinion and shut them down. It's happened before. I don't know much about business in Canada but it way too common in US history!!

@@MrGaryGG48 "the equipment some government entity is forcing upon the working public. " Infrastructure is infrastructure. Even if the market was swinging that way without the government's intervention, they'd still have to invest in the infrastructure. Climate change needs to be addressed either way, and until the power grid is capable of handling all those electric vehicles, electric-drive hybrid designs are a good transition point. I'm a landscaper, and I drive a '98 Chevy 1-ton. Those 6.5L Detroit blocks, as economical as they are, are also known for cracking, and I'll have to replace it at some point anyways, so I'm hoping to get a conversion kit eventually. Doing that will also allow me a way to transition to using cordless tools where it wasn't practical before, as I'll be able to swap out batteries and charge them onsite.

@@BlackEpyon This hybrid truck concept is a very practical answer to a whole list of issues that need attention. Unfortunately, far to much energy & money has been and will continue to be spent on what has become more a "religion" than a technical problem. I would certainly prefer to convert my old Ford when the time comes than spend who knows how much on the latest "whatever" that comes along.

@@MrGaryGG48 Just because climate science is an incredibly complex multi-diciplinary subject doesn't make it a religion. Religion operates on the absence of evidence, and works even better if you don't think about it. Climate science has over 140 years of measurement data, and millions of years worth of reconstructed data (chemical composition in rock layers, ice cores, etc), just to establish the historical trends, never mind the forecast models which also involve launching satellites to accurately map the carbon cycle, and comparative atmospheric and climate studies of the carbon-rich atmospheres of Mars and Venus! We're not dealing with a sample of one here. If your understanding of climate science comes from Al Gore, you may as well believe in God just because the liar behind the pulpit told you he's real. That's not how science is done. Also, yes modern trucks are ludicrously expensive. And much bigger than they need to be.
